udayrddy··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2020)
curious, what differentiates the similar product to GSheets with GSheets.
udayrddy··on Ask HN: Is reading PDFs on mobile a pain?
same here. I mostly deal with text analytics, while the text PDFs do not create much issues, unless a crazy font is used, and the 2 column pages are a nightmare.

In case you are looking for an API to extract structure rich content like tables from PDFs or images, look into this https://extracttable.com (p.s. I contributed to it)

udayrddy··on Show HN: Running Commentary – A Chrome extension to listen the text commentary
Hello All,

Developer here,

I'm a cricket sport fan, used watch most of the competitive matches live, unless I'm in office, which restricts streaming sites also the fear of being easily caught because of bandwidth consumption from the system. So, I follow text commentary sites like cricbuzz, cricinfo in the office hours, but the browser tab switch is inevitable when you want to follow a live feed or a sports text commentary. This browser extension will read the latest update (feed) for you so that you continue the work.

udayrddy··on Show HN: Createresu.me – Client-Side PDF Resume Maker
Hi Chandi,

The design is slick, I like it. I run https://notyce.me which I believe might complement your app or vice-versa. If you feel the collaboration can make things better, can you drop me an email mentioned on my profile. Thanks

udayrddy··on Show HN: Parsr – A toolchain to transform documents into usable structured text
Shameless plug: Would you like to join the club of happy customers at https://extracttable.com - API to extract tabular data from images and PDFs without worrying about co-ordinates.

A comprehensive competitor comparison, along with outputs, is available at https://extracttable.com/compare.html

udayrddy··on Show HN: Parsr – A toolchain to transform documents into usable structured text
That looks like a great comprehensive tool kit for data extraction. I understand the bundle is licensed under Apache, I'm curious to check on the needs/rules-to-follow to include a service like Abbyy.

We, extracttable.com - extract tabular data from images and PDFs over API, are interested to contribute and integrate the service into the bundle.

udayrddy··on Ask HN: What to do when your side project is more fun than your job?
Switch to a more fun and interesting job whose skills can be also used in the side project
udayrddy··on Ask HN: What are the alternative programs to Y Combinator?
Well, to that point, YC or alternative programs be like "Why should we give you money?"
udayrddy··on Ask HN: What were your achievements this year?

Managed to allocate 4 hrs/week for a sport

After 4 years of trail and errors finally launched a product that is generating revenue

Next year Goals

continue the 4 hrs/week for a sport to sweat

join a startup by first quarter

restrict to 10-15 hrs/week for the current side product

  work on another side project
udayrddy··on A guide to OCR with Tesseract, OpenCV and Python
"Let's assume you've created an OCR model to detect Name, Address, DOB from Drivers Licenses. Since there are 3 categories in this model, each API call will be priced at $0.01 * 3 = $0.03/image. So if you're on the Medium plan, you'll get 99/0.03 = 3300 API calls."

Woah !! That is insanely high priced.

udayrddy··on Ask HN: Can 20x price difference hurt us?
Aah !! Probably the best approach. Thank you
udayrddy··on Ask HN: Advice for a Student?
> ..But I wonder if there will be any smart people worth hanging around in a rubbish college

Well, there might be people like you too.. surprise them and get surprised yourself

udayrddy··on Ask HN: For a startup, when should I begin writing tests?
I stood up the product in 23 days, launched, will be 3 month young in couple of days. We have test cases written on our open to public python library, just one, nothing more than that. We purposefully asked a outsider, a freelancer, to write test cases for us looking in to the API documentation available on the website. This way we validated our documentation as well as the python library.
udayrddy··on Ask HN: How do you drive traffic to a website?
"Show HN: "
udayrddy··on Ask HN: How did you acquire your first 100 users?
Depends on what you offer.

A lunch offering service like foodsby goes to a building manager of small office spaces to offer a coupon code

A SaaS service drops a post on here

If you are offering goods platforms like kickstarter or producthunt
I launched https://extracttable.com on Aug'27 this year with a post here (no better place than HN), reached the first 100 customers under 60 days, with 22 paid customers. Right now, the count is at 197, hopefully crossing 250 by EOY
udayrddy··on Show HN: I created an Opposites Game for my daughter and wanted to share:)
that's a slick UI. super cool sloth - did you create those?
udayrddy··on Ask HN: How to control users abusing the free credits and demo
Guess what, the data usage policy has made the difference for us.

Data from Purchased Credits neither be used nor shared

Data from free/promotional/demo will be used internally ;)
udayrddy··on Show HN: Simple SaaS Price Optimization in 30 Days Using Your Stripe and GA Data
Unsure, if that's an app error or real server overloaded becasue I tried an empty stripe templated file with real GA data.

Curious to know the price dependency.

udayrddy··on Ask HN: How to control users abusing the free credits and demo
Considering the IP limit from the demo. I think the prepaid plan for under 5$ sounds like a good option. Thanks for the trigger.
udayrddy··on Ask HN: How to control users abusing the free credits and demo
The offering is API as a service, unsure if Video amuses me as a developer.
udayrddy··on Ask HN: How to control users abusing the free credits and demo
> Those users willing to register 10 accounts don't convert to paid accounts much

Well, there are instances in our case who are paid users now.

We are operating the service under 50% margin after op cost - our closest competitor in price, charges 2-5x to ours.

I'm afraid (at least at this point of time) to put the CC requirement upfront. I may eventually go for it, if we bleed more.

Thanks for sharing your experience

udayrddy··on Ask HN: Does equity motivate you?
This shook me. Obviously, I was on the opposite side of the opinion. I never had the experience working in a funded startup, I prepared my mind to join one (I already chose, a seed funded, likely to join in 2020) after the current company was acquired in January - Now, I'm confused. Of course, I understand the equity as a lottery ticket - I'm confident on the startup I chose will grow big, I'm interested to hear the negative side of your 12 year experience, especially the climax. Honestly, I'm in a opinion of cashing a 300K at the least after Series D or Acquisition, in 3-5 years.
udayrddy··on Ask HN: Why aren't remote human drivers a thing?
I do not see any use case with it. If I have to remote control it, I would rather control directly. Isn't the whole purpose to make use of your time on other works instead of driving?
udayrddy··on Ask HN: Do you have personal bots?
I created a LinkedIn bot in 2017, during my last semester, to apply jobs on LinkedIn that match my profile. It helped me to invest my time in developing skills through freelancing instead of applying jobs.
udayrddy··on Ask HN: What is your passive income 2019?
https://extracttable.com - started on Aug 26 ($1400 till date), injecting the revenue back in to it to release more services.
udayrddy··on Ask HN: What are your biggest roadblocks when building a new project/SaaS?
I meant to re-think on the problem you are solving. Will it be used as a pain killer or a supplement.

Often, people ignore supplements, cannot ignore the pain killer.

Eg: Yelp (pain killer) solved the pain by putting all restaurants together. I built a (vitamin) plugin (lemony - chrome extension), to display restaurant's FDA ratings - while you can't completely ignore FDA ratings but easy to overlook.

udayrddy··on Ask HN: What are your biggest roadblocks when building a new project/SaaS?
After launching 4 products(launched the latest, a couple of months back) in 5 years (1.5y full time Masters). Here is what I realized

  1. what is the motivation - a pain killer or a vitamin

  2. Decide - Is this to add income to your regular job

  3. Decide - If not 2, think of cost to run it

  4. Decide - How do you want to manage this, when you wake up next day with another cash cow SAAS idea

  5. clarity - time you want to spend on this EVERY DAY, to not regret later

  6. Decide - What is that only feature you want to release in the MVP

  7. Set - timelines, STOP pressing yourself into the stress; easy goals and relaxed timelines

  9. Launch - no better place than HN to release MVP

On top of all these, STOP thinking going fulltime into it until the PROFITS at least match your regular job salary
udayrddy··on Ask HN: What are your biggest roadblocks when building a new project/SaaS?
100% NO "when building"
udayrddy··on Ask HN: Why don't homeless people from SF move to another city?
Not a stupid question to think on. You should consider offering a burger or a coffee to a homeless and ask them this question - you'll hear a more realistic answer.
