ublaze··on Run Python Applications Efficiently with malloc_trim
I've also seen some tricks like stripping docstrings from the release since those strings (hopefully) aren't used in production.
ublaze··on Application Load Balancers enables gRPC workloads with end to end HTTP/2 support
gRPC is one of the best decisions we've made at our company. Here's the longer blog post - https://dropbox.tech/infrastructure/courier-dropbox-migratio..., but some things:

1. Performance

2. It's hard to make changes that are backwards incompatible via protobuf (reduces significant source of bugs)

3. Great, standardized observability for every service. Small services don't really need too many custom metrics, since we log a LOT of metrics at the RPC layer

4. Standardization at the RPC layer lets us build useful generic infrastructure - like a load testing framework (where users only need to specify the RPC service, method, and parameters like concurrency, RPS).

ublaze··on Launch HN: Cohere (YC S20) – Real-time user support for web apps
This is a pretty innovative idea. Wonder if the underlying tech can be used to get rid of selenium tests.
ublaze··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Hi Peter,

Does the prevailing wage rule apply only to base salary or to total compensation?

Do you think the new rules will be sued and blocked?

ublaze··on Launch HN: Doppler (YC W19) – Easily manage your env vars and secrets
How did you build your landing page? It's pretty slick.
ublaze··on IAM is hard – Thoughts on $80M fine from the Capital One Breach
Offering this service can probably be spun into its own SAAS company.
ublaze··on A terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day at Slack
Cloud load balancers can be sneakily expensive. Few months ago, we spent a few weeks replacing an ELB with naive client side load balancing via round robin, which saves us > 200k/year. ELBs charge per byte transmitted, which seems reasonable, but can end up really expensive.
ublaze··on Piranha: An Open Source Tool to Automatically Delete Stale Code
One of our internal experimentation systems handles this by capping rollouts to 95%. So the author is forced to clean up their code if they want a full rollout.
ublaze··on Speeding up a Git monorepo
Thanks for your work and your team's work on Git!
ublaze··on Speeding up a Git monorepo
Precisely.
ublaze··on Speeding up a Git monorepo
At least two years ago, Google seemed to be driving an effort to move away from Piper and to Mercurial - not just a frontend (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/mozilla.dev.version-...). They would need to build a bunch of custom extensions for that to work, and they've open sourced some.

But I have no idea what came of that effort.

ublaze··on Speeding up a Git monorepo
Which operating system are you using? That's impressive. More importantly, our hook doesn't support the new query version so we might want to switch.
ublaze··on Speeding up a Git monorepo
Sure.

core.fsmonitor is set to our custom fsmonitor (this causes issues with submodules, at least on 2.24)

core.untrackedCache true

We use index version 4

And a slight hack: our wrapper sets GIT_FORCE_UNTRACKED_CACHE = 1. This forces `git status` to write the untracked cache if it notices a difference. I was too lazy to add a patch to configure that.

ublaze··on Speeding up a Git monorepo
We shipped a wrapper that tweaks git configs and logs metrics, and a custom fsmonitor hook that was slightly faster than the stock one. We also ensured watchman was installed on developers laptops.

And we made a few changes to Git to fix bugs (for example, `git stash` wasn't using fsmonitor data, so it was slow).

ublaze··on Speeding up a Git monorepo
https://gregoryszorc.com/blog/2018/10/29/global-kernel-locks... is an interesting write up about the problem.
ublaze··on Speeding up a Git monorepo
Author of the post here.

I think Git upstream is trying to simplify configuration. They have a config option called `features.manyFiles` which enables most of the features we enabled for our developers (https://git-scm.com/docs/git-config#Documentation/git-config...).

We wanted to use this instead of deploying a wrapper, but it turns out that some of Git's features like fsmonitor do not interact well with repositories with submodules (there were Git crashes). And we have some developers that work on repositories with submodules. So we needed something more flexible, like enabling these features only on particular repositories.

ublaze··on Ask HN: Is there a search engine which excludes the world's biggest websites?
I've wondered if this can be built with a limited budget, in terms of cloud costs. At least it feels like you'd need a lot of hosts to satisfactorily index the web, and store the results so that you can return results instantaneously.

Dropbox | San Francisco | https://www.dropbox.com I'm an engineer on the Developer Tools team at Dropbox. We're looking for senior engineers who're excited to make other developers more productive by building great quality developer tools and/or services.

https://blogs.dropbox.com/tech/2019/12/continuous-integratio.... and https://blogs.dropbox.com/tech/2019/05/athena-our-automated-.... are some examples of work that we've done in the past.

ublaze··on Ask HN: What are you learning?
Super cool! That looks professional. I have a landing page up for people interested in the idea and want updates - https://simpleblog.io/
ublaze··on Ask HN: What are you learning?
I'm learning how to do web development again. I've only been working on infrastructure tools/services at my job, and I'm re-learning concepts like how to authenticate users, and my first time seriously using React, Django and Typescript.

My project is a hosted blog platform where you can edit a Google doc & publish it as a blog post, which is useful for publishing rich blog posts with tables, while keeping features like review/collaboration, tracking changes etc.

How do they enforce these things? I'm sure if you do something silly like show up in the company's payroll you'll suffer consequences but this rule is pretty nuanced.

Do you know of the legality of running an online side business while on an H1b? Has there been any change in that law?

Do you know if the S386 measure has made any progress? Alternatively, after the covid situation, do you see the waiting time for indian/chinese EB2 applicants go up/down?

ublaze··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on now?
This is great. I'd love to use something like this.
ublaze··on Rewriting the heart of our sync engine
As someone who's written a Dropbox blog post - yes. A tech blog is often cited by candidates as something they were intrigued by.
ublaze··on Hard Startups
Once you decided what kind of startup you want to make, how did you actually find a problem that fits that criteria? That's the part where I'm stuck now.
ublaze··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2020)
Dropbox | Mountain View, San Francisco | https://www.dropbox.com

I'm an engineer on the Developer Infrastructure team at Dropbox. We're starting work on rebuilding our CI/CD infrastructure, which runs and processes millions of tests a day across dozens of platforms. Our plan is to provide faster feedback to users (lesser latency), while being more efficient. There's a lot of interesting design work for senior engineers interested in distributed systems, and it's a perfect fit for engineers who want to create a magical development experience for others.

ublaze··on This isn't your father's Microsoft
I have to add Git. They seem to have a dedicated Git performance team. I recently sent a patch to improve git performance, and have mostly been collaborating with friendly Microsoft engineers. Not what I expected at a first glance.
ublaze··on Athena: Dropbox's Build Health Management System
I'm happy to answer any questions regarding this system.
ublaze··on Ask HN: Did you delete your Facebook account in 2018?
No. I unfollowed everyone and everything on Facebook, and whenever I add someone new, I unfollow them immediately too. So my news feed is perpetually empty. This makes Facebook something that reminds me of people's birthdays, and let's me keep in touch via Messenger, which is all that I need.
