u48998··on Dropbox hits 1.0
One thing I'd hope Dropbox does well is not get stuck with syncing when a program is running. I had my evernote database file in dropbox folder but it wouldn't syc if evernote is on. It wouldn't sync if I keep my pwsafe on. I now wonder how is it going to handle if I selectively sync Firefox bookmarks. I have to shut down these programs in order for dropbox to sync, which makes no sense.
u48998··on Yahoo is Shutting Down Del.icio.us
Is there a way to use Dropbox to keep/run bookmarks from cloud? I am assuming with the latest version, I should be able to selectively backup Firefox bookmarks. I would then only be missing RSS feed (if only people would come up with the way to provide local RSS ability to average users).
u48998··on Hotmail development team on Reddit
I'm not a fan/user of Hotmail but what I don't understand is why people compare it to Gmail, or why people compare one service to another? If there are limitations and issues, than discuss on its own merits.
u48998··on BankSimple Launches Preview Site
I was thinking about switching from BofA to ING but the unavailability of ATMs near me, is the show stopper.
u48998··on How to build discipline and brainwash yourself
The black Friday bug seems to have hit HN. Two purchasing suggestions in two days with loads of social comments (making it enticing of course).

So why do we celebrate Thanksgiving?

u48998··on Blekko partners with DuckDuckGo
I want DDG to show me movie times like the way Google does "movies zip code". Otherwise, I'm all set.
u48998··on My Windows Live Mesh Cluster Fail
SugarSync is not bad either, 5GB for free compared to Dropbox's 2.
u48998··on Facebook’s Gmail Killer, Project Titan, Is Coming On Monday
Well, didn't they buy Drop.io? So obviously they're going after our emails. The interesting thing would be to see if they require people to adopt new email addresses or not
u48998··on Hacker News Facebook Group
This is actually insanity.

Most of you are on FB and you are here as well. So why create another space to converse? Is it because FB has a potential to do it better than anyone else? I'd say yes and no. Yes because it has largest user base. No because they are testing features and there are many other services which has done lot better in organizing, facilitating group conversations.

Either case, the HN group and many other such popular groups showing up at FB, only tells one thing: it is going to be a huge hit. How it gets adopted later, like how Twitter Lists did, only time will tell.

u48998··on Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) Release Candidate
I wish to use Ubuntu because I have slightly older hardware, but if it renders youtube video in slow motion and if I see tons of similar complaints on the internet, than what good is an operating system competing with Microsoft which isn't even working well right out of the box?

Everyone seems to be getting greedy for updated hardware and operating systems. I don't really care to upgrade my hardware every two years. If Ubuntu cannot deliver without fastest processor and video memory, than they might as well just start selling to corporate and be done with the free stuff.

u48998··on Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) Release Candidate
I hate Ubuntu, there is no support for it. Tried it twice already. They need to go back to the drawing board.
u48998··on Photos Too Racy for Facebook? Put Them in the Fridge (YC S10)
People don't like to accept but email and email lists are still the fundamental ways people collaborate on important and personal matters. Even though Yahoo and Google groups are not being talked about much, it wouldn't hurt if someone innovate on top of those same old method of communication.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter if data (email) is pushed to the user or user is pushed to the date (website). What matters is the quality and integrity of the content and communication platform. If people feel comfortable using your service, if your service is easy enough for them to use, you win.

u48998··on The Fridge (YC S10) Takes The Privacy Headaches Out Of Sharing
Seems they broke the fridge!
u48998··on DuckDuckGo's new privacy policy tried to explain why you should care
Duck Duck Go should seriously consider adopting a serious sounding name.
u48998··on Ask HN: Why do RSS Readers (mostly) suck?
RSS readers are fine, Google Reader is better. The problem is in user experience and how they use it. If you do not prioritize and constantly worry about missed or unread items, you will only end up blaming your reader. The trick is in organizing, prioritizing and ignoring the unread/missed items. With these three strategies, you can effectively absorb unbelievable amount of data on daily basis.
u48998··on I laughed at Posterous, but they proved me wrong
Posterous email-to-post idea was so simple that it was confusing at the same time. We then saw that they introduced bookmarklet and other standard blogging features. Which to me suggest that not many people are using post-to-email feature even though it is now available at every other micro-blogging services. The simplicity of design almost always works in your favor though.
u48998··on Starbucks to Offer Free Wi-Fi Service
Appending http://www.google.com/url?q= to the URL seems to be the key. Seems to be working fine.
u48998··on No, The U.S. Didn’t Just ‘Discover’ a $1 Trillion Afghan Motherlode
New or not, this story in the NYTimes at least brought an old perspective to the new generation. Lot more people (due to Lithium take of the story) is now aware of the potential of Afghanistan, irrespective of the conspiracy theories etc.
u48998··on Starbucks to Offer Free Wi-Fi Service
Does this redirect work with all of WSJ articles? Nice.
u48998··on The art of the homepage
Google can shove images up their arse. I don't give a damn. I was keeping them as my browser's home page as long as it was clean. Now I have switched to DDG.
u48998··on Facebook Admits Censoring Content in Pakistan
Both the local government and the people wanted this solution, hence FB delivered. The problem is when government would want something and people don't. What would FB do then?
u48998··on Duck Duck Go Searches Are Now Externally Anonymous
k, thanks, have added it to the firefox, will give it a try. The first impression was pretty bad with that Ad showing up.
u48998··on Duck Duck Go Searches Are Now Externally Anonymous
I did a search and I was served a domain parking Ad as a landing page. WTF am I missing? This search engine looks like a spam to me.and I wouldn't have cared if it hadn't shown up at HN.
u48998··on Arrington : "You’re Welcome, You Bastards"
He has clearly quoted a lot of material, and so what if they made a mistake. This is not how a blog post should be composed from the contents which are not yours. I say TC is in error again and is just whining.
u48998··on Facebook leaks user's IP addresses
Seems Facebook users are born in 2009 or after wards. Every email service sends your IP address with the email. The exception is Google.
u48998··on The Facebook Cull
I don't need to cull anything because I never allowed Facebook or myself to build such a fake list of friends and relationship to begin with. However, even with only close family in your list, FB (or any other service besides the email service you trust) is not worth sharing anything that is of private nature. Ultimately, FB is as same as any other place on the internet.

I use FB's private nature of service for close family and friends only to email them as it is convenient.

u48998··on Posterous (YC 08) unveils Post Editor 2.0
Actually there's a next sentence to it: when we build the bare minimum service, we'll create the "awe" effect for tech-media bloggers. They'll think we're "pretty cool". and they'll follow us even for the tinniest upgrade we make.

What a joke. I can't even believe this is a story on this website as well.

u48998··on Why I'm quitting Google Reader: Google is sharing me to death
Okay, thanks. I still find it an odd reason to leave Google Reader. There's just no better alternative out there.
u48998··on Why I'm quitting Google Reader: Google is sharing me to death
But what exactly is being shared by me without my knowledge? I don't get it.

I am not sharing the feeds I read in my Google Reader, nor do I click any individual feed story to share.

u48998··on Why I'm quitting Google Reader: Google is sharing me to death
What am I missing? I don't share anything in my Google Reader. So where's the problem?
