u48998··on The only secure password is the one you can’t remember
What's the difference between using these password managers and a plain old spreadsheet file?
u48998··on Firefox 4 is here
Speaking of private data and encryption, do you know which FF file is responsible for History data? I know the Bookmarks json file but I'm looking to keep my history file as a backup too (which I believe FF doesn't backup like it does bookmarks). I hope it isn't places.sqlite file because it gets ridiculously huge even after you wipe your data clean.

I wish to rely on my own backup system for both bookmarks and history data as both of them are important on continuous basis and both of them should be user's own responsibility (unlike what delicious or many other bookmarks syncing services may tell you).

Okay, I'll give these two suggestions a try. Sync worked the first time for me but then it just stopped. It no longer brings my stuff over to new profile/install, so I was curious to see if my data is even there or not (which is not a big deal as I have backup and I was just testing). It would help to have an activity monitor somewhere or a way to check the percentage of syncing done.
u48998··on Dropbox and why you should invest in people
There may have been number of storage sites popping up back in the days but didn't Dropbox provide something new and necessary technology to the PC? As in, don't worry about backing up your files? I don't recall even Box dot net - who was much in the tech news - provide such features.
u48998··on Firefox 4 is here
Two things:

1. Sync is totally not up to par. It doesn't inform what it does in the background and there is no place to check on the web what it uploads. I am not sure why FF even bothered to release this feature when it is not even ready (there are several people complaining about many things of Sync at the Add-on review).

2. The bookmark/history manager can use upgrade/better features. Ever since the Delicious fiasco, FF could possibly play a better role in adding modern bells and whistles to its bookmarks manager.

Other than above two, I'm not complaining.

There is no startup time in Chrome, it is always running even if you close it.
u48998··on Sprint integrates Google Voice
Their everything unlimited plan is $99. That's still a lot from median/average perspective.
u48998··on Sprint integrates Google Voice
$99 per month recurring cost. Damn. That's a rich person's territory.

u48998··on Show HN: I made a Hacker News for everyone.
Nice concept, but it doesn't seem big enough right now for me to login and come back everyday.

You are comparing apples with oranges. I said competition is good because we are talking about blogging space. Imagine if there was only one blogging platform. It would not be a nice situation. So Wordpress and Blogger both developing actively is a good thing for the rest of us. It would be best if more blogging platforms could jump in and improve the space (not that there aren't others already).

Back to education and government. You are already blaming your paying taxes as a culprit for you attending bad government school. What proof do you have to back up your allegation? What if there was no public school and less government taxes and still no private school to provide you education? Do you think private schools are only going to crop up because government isn't charging more taxes? What guarantee is there that you'd have a good private school in the absence of any public school? Blaming taxes for all the ills of the government is a myth propagated by one of the political party. Check out the countries where there are no government schools of any quality (because people don't pay taxes and things are pretty much messed up all around). You'd be glad you attended public school in America irrespective of the quality compared to many other countries of the world.

I should also add. Technology is driven by people so it matters how they use it to the advantage of all and not just some. When technology helps people, we generally mean to say that people are helping people. I am not being altruistic here but there are things which should be free and available to all equally and education is one of that.
u48998··on Imagine K12
I expect basic education to stay within the realm of government and free. Public giving up education to private/corporate sector is a recipe for disaster.

How technology can help government improve the quality, and how technology can keep the education free for the masses, is another thing.

u48998··on Imagine K12
Two things which should be basic human rights and absolutely free, are: communication and education. But people wish to earn $$ off of them. And then they wonder why the world is in such a messed up state.

Kudos to Khan Academy and Bill Gates for patronizing and liberating the education.

u48998··on Half A Billion Blog Posts Later, Google To Give Blogger A Revamp
Competition is always good. Finally an overdue upgrade and nice to see continuous development. I think Blogger is one of the few Google product which still has relevance and consistency. If only they had worked a little faster to catch up with Wordpress and had controlled their spam earlier in the game.
u48998··on Unconfirmed reports that Yahoo has sold Delicious for $5 Million+
I want my browser to develop and improve the History feature so I don't have to rely on manual bookmarking. Strangely, no one is paying attention.
u48998··on Unconfirmed reports that Yahoo has sold Delicious for $5 Million+
Firefox 4 + Sync (Slurp to get the bookmarks out of delicious). Additionally, use Dropbox or SugarSync to backup bookmarks folder. With 5 copies of backed up bookmarks, you'll be covered from all sides.
u48998··on Poll: What OS do you currently use?
Recently installed Peppermint-Ice, very much impressed by the speed and ease of installation and use.
u48998··on Tell HN: We have had our 100 thousandth bookmark and wanted to tell you about it
I corrected the URL, Wordpress.com as you know has really long URLs so I didn't want to post the whole thing.

I am not sure if I am following how Firefox 4 and no tags is a spam?

u48998··on Tell HN: We have had our 100 thousandth bookmark and wanted to tell you about it
Can you show me spam in my comment? And where did I use the word "loosing"?
u48998··on Tell HN: We have had our 100 thousandth bookmark and wanted to tell you about it
Man I hate it when people downvote my comment instead of replying. What an affed up system this is here at HN.

u48998··on Show HN: Invite to try fiesta.cc - effortless mailing lists
Okay thanks. It seems like an interesting concept, something that should be native to Email perhaps. However, outside of this thread, if I visit your site (as an average user), the concept of how it works doesn't seem easy right away. I'll have to play/test to figure it out.
u48998··on Show HN: Invite to try fiesta.cc - effortless mailing lists
Isn't this what Posterous supposedly does? In relation to Yahoo/Google groups, where does list archives go?
u48998··on Storm Clouds: Gmail Failure Reinforces Danger Of Becoming Too Cloud-Dependent
I would be extremely careful with any service that claims to be on the "cloud". Backup your Email (no, not Gmail but Email) using Thunderbird or Outlook or any other old-fashioned email program. There's no better solution!. Use and keep thumb drive in your key-chain (everyone still carry keys even though we carry modern cellphones and what not). There's no better way to be sure than to keep and carry your important data to yourself.

It is a huge human fail when we treat Google and Facebook as Internet/Social life. They are not! Mind your own email, pictures, data, contacts, URL yourself.

u48998··on Free Kindle This November
Even though Amazon is not a wholesaler like Sam's or Costco, but I won't mind getting movies at $35 per year. $79 is too much an yearly renewal for what appears to be just a guaranteed free delivery.
