tyurok··on Facebook’s New Captcha Test: 'Upload a Clear Photo of Your Face'
I signed up recently, didn't happen.

Maybe it's region based? Or did they remove it?

tyurok··on What's Functional Programming All About?
I can speak for Erlang when coming to immutable data structures and the memory issue. Since erlang's processes are basicaly a recursive function, once the process dies or it calls itself (with tail-call optimization), unused structures dies out quickly. Also changing an immutable data structure does not make a whole copy but rather a "diff".

And since processes are completely isolated, garbage collection is easy (and doesn't hang the whole runtime), so the memory argument has been solved for some time, not by the language, but by the runtime.

Compared to other languages, I find that I need less debugging in general. When I need debugging it's usually because of libraries/external dependencies with weird behavior, but sine everything is a function, it's easier to figure out what's wrong and where since you can call anything as a function in iEX.

"Full stack developer" is just a new word for "programmer". "Programmer" could be a role for any part of the stack, you just have to solve the problem in hand and you're good.

If you're good or not, specialist or generalist, that's another discussion.

tyurok··on Monolith First (2015)
It's also about the teams being independent of processes, stacks and tools. Usually monoliths have infrastructure, library and tools constraint that are hard o break.

Yes, microservices adds overhead in tooling. You have to measure carefully the trade-offs. It only pays off in a way larger scale than most of the organizations.

tyurok··on Ask HN: Which non-technology book has influenced you the most and why?
Antifragile - Nassim Nicholas Taleb

He puts into words concepts of life so close to us yet so foreign sounding that makes us rethink everything in our lives.

When you ask people "What is the opposite of fragile", they usually answer robust, which Taleb proves to be incorrect by introducing a new concept, the Antifragilty. It entangles so many things in economic, academic, science, finances and other systems with several tales from the past revisited with a new lens.

tyurok··on Why the Elixir language has great potential
You'll find that Elixir/Erlang is a mix of FP and OO at the end, which is why I find it amazing. While people debate FP vs OO, it takes the good parts of both. You can read more about the OO aspects of Erlang from the author himself: http://tech.noredink.com/post/142689001488/the-most-object-o...

Successful stories about good hiring usually involves most of/the whole team being part of the hiring process and less delegated to HR people.

tyurok··on Show HN: Wriber – Idea Generator
I tried with some niche content and got some weird combinations, but it still gave me a good ideia on how to write something about it in bullet points, which is really nice. Keep it up, I'll definitely keep checking.
tyurok··on O'Reilly Maker – create your own O'Reilly animal covers
That really looks fun, please make it work.
tyurok··on Ask HN: How do you come up with hobby projects?
The fact that there's a ton of related websites shouldn't ever stop you from doing a simple side project, since it's for learning purposes anyway. And a "copy" of something can always shift into something original.
