tysilva··on I Find Problems to Solve as a Staff Engineer
Very valuable perspective. I feel many engineers looking to grow fall victim to waiting for others to guide them towards the right problems. The key is really to look at the pain points and engineer solutions with some level of agency, demonstrating that you can.
tysilva··on Politician reads AI prompt during assembly
Dead internet theory inching closer everyday.
tysilva··on Kill The Cookie Banner
I don't disagree. The ideal state here is really layers of customation for the defaults. Options like reject all, or strictly necessary would be at the forefront. And then it's really up to the individual how they want to proceed when those options are not available.

Wow, finally. This would be a major quality of life update for browsing the web. As others have stated, not all sites merit the same preferences. Hopefully they can adapt a middleground of default settings with the ability to customize site by site.
tysilva··on Show HN: I mapped every US golf course
I noticed the site is actually quite slow to load on first visit (at least for me). Is it actually loading in all the courses up front?

If so, a better experience would be a landing page where users can search or specify a geographic location - only loading in what is relevant for the query.

tysilva··on Apple Is the King of AI and Nobody Knows It
On the deep partnership with Google for Gemini, it will be interesting to see how Google and Apple respond to GPT Live.

This does really feel like the first milestone for voice assistants that are equivalent to talking to a human. Not suggesting it's perfect - but the tech is only going to improve from here.

tysilva··on Show HN: How well do you use Claude Code?
It really does feel like leaders in large organizations are lost on the valuable metrics when it comes to code in general. The mantra seems to often be, make number go higher - regardless of if it's valuable data or not.
tysilva··on Politician reads AI prompt during assembly
This is our new normal. It's not necessarily interesting. But you have to expect nearly everyone is using AI at this point.
tysilva··on Corporate America Has Suddenly Decided to Stop Blowing Money on AI
Everytually there needs to be a stronger enforcement of "right model for the task". The landscape currently lends itself to flexibility. And people tend to lean on the more costly options expecting a better end result.
tysilva··on The AI jobs apocalypse probably isn't coming anytime soon
At the same time, we seem to be making rapid progress year over year in capability. Competition is keeping things progressing forward at an interesting pace.

It will be interesting to see what we are actually capable of 5 years from now... 10 years... There is almost definitely some job functions that are at risk and just don't know it, or haven't felt it yet.

tysilva··on Claude Opus 5
It's pretty wild how we are seeing the conversation change every 1-2 weeks. I wonder how long this cycle of progress and innovation among competitors can keep up.
tysilva··on Alphabet's cash burn raises alarm for Big Tech as AI spending climbs
Google does have a positional advantage in Android and Apple picking up Gemini as the baked-in AI assistant. It will be interesting to see what kind of impact that has in their services and profitability for AI.
tysilva··on Waymo's driverless cars crash less often than people
They are not without their faults. But it's hard to deny that self driving cars enable a much safer space for us to live.

It would be great to see an open framework for the cars to become aware of each other, self driving or not.
