tyohn··on Nokia's Ovi app store goes live
I'm a little disappointed by the reception this news item is getting here on HN, isn't this a great opportunity for developers? I know HN is heavily Apple orientated site and filled with Flash haters - but Nokia has millions of phones out there and by supporting Flash - gives the Ovi app store a good chance of success.
tyohn··on Education Killed The Creativity [In Me]
"Every school Iʼve visited was participating in the systematic suppression of creative genius" - Gordon MacKenzie
tyohn··on Data Mining Moves to Human Resources
Cool, now when I go for an interview I can quote my DMN (data mining number).
tyohn··on We're building our own ad network
"3) My time is very, very expensive -- I shoot for $100 an hour." - Aren't sales the life blood of your business? Is there anything else more important? Do other sales channels cost you less time and produce a higher return on investment? It almost sounds like you're looking for the goose that lays golden eggs. It's like you want to make a sale without any effort at all or if you do put time/effort in - you want paid "extra" for your time - doesn't the sale of product pay your salary?

p.s. I have no affiliation with stormpluse - although I love their site.

tyohn··on Why Not Bring a Neanderthal to Life?
Would Geico hire him?
tyohn··on Ask YC: Feedback for our new startup
Thanks for the input. Great idea about "An entire auction in an ad box" - I like it. And the banners are being re-designed by professionals they should be done very soon :)
tyohn··on Ask YC: Feedback for our new startup
If you read the satisfaction guarantee you'll see it says "If you see the Satisfaction Guarantee link on an item". We control which items have the satisfaction guarantee - so we will reserve the satisfaction guarantee for sellers that have earned a good reputation with us.
tyohn··on Ask YC: Feedback for our new startup
That's a valid point but I don't agree that the interactive part isn't a plus. I agree and realize that some people will be afraid to use our banners because of phishing - but some won't... I hope :)
tyohn··on Ask YC: Feedback for our new startup
You're right I didn't know eBay had interactive ad banners that you can place bids from... Could you point me to the link - thanks.
tyohn··on Ask YC: Feedback for our new startup
I'm sure there are more errors. I've been working on finding them - but you are right I am the writer, coder and proof reader - and I'm not great at writing - won't mention my dyslexia :)
tyohn··on Ask YC: Feedback for our new startup
I'll up date that! I guess I need to practice math. Thanks for catching that...
tyohn··on Ask YC: Feedback for our new startup
I'm glad you like it. Thank you for the idea! We already have a few site using our banners but its going to be a challenge getting products, affiliates and bidders :)
tyohn··on Ask YC: Feedback for our new startup
We are just getting ready to launch so I'm not sure what the "effective CPM" will be vs other ad networks but I hope it will be high:) That's a good point about shipping. thanx
tyohn··on Why Climbers Die On Mount Everest
As a avid trekker and climber (I've trekked to Everest base camp - fun stuff) ~ if you're wondering why people climb Everest it can really be summed up best by George Leigh Mallory - "because its there".
tyohn··on Selling ideas to a big company
Toy and game makers.
tyohn··on Why Good Developers Are Not Getting 10 times the Pay
Think about a real rock star (not a rock star programmer). They play/sell their music to millions of paying fans. Now think about the difference to a band that only plays out in local clubs and might sell a few CDs. That rock star who plays to millions of people might not be as "good" as the local band but they are generating a lot more value. Now think about the programmer who is 10x better than a "not so good" programmer... is the end result of the 10x better programing worth 10x more value in the end? Even if they are generating 10x more value - I think that the value generated by real rock star is 100s or 1000s of times more than the local band. So do "rockstar" programmers create a 100x or 1000x more value than a "not as good programmer" does for a company - great rockstars do, great sport players do, great actors do...
tyohn··on Google Gears Down for Tougher Times
humm, I wonder if this is where companies slip into bureaucratic methods and practices. I'm all for streamlining business but "rigid quality-control system designed to eliminate waste" could be a slippery slope to start down...
tyohn··on Cutting Up the Founders' Pie
I like the idea. If one founder is working harder/more/intently or taking on more responsibility I think the reward should be equal to the "effort"...
tyohn··on Ask HN: Review my website, please.
My two cents: I'd change the design: I'd make the front page more like Google. (Search box in the middle)

And your site is full of features - like "Browse baby names..." and "We have amazing maps..." those thing are features - what you need to do is list the benefits. You should tell the users what value they get. Example: Our coats have double lining = feature: Our coats keep you warmer = value.

And from a users experience point of view: The site isn't very instructive and its hard to navigate.

For me I want to use the site to find the least "popular" name - I guess a user can figure it out by your maps and boxes - But wouldn't it be great to just type in a name and get a page back with a "name popularity" map? Or if I need suggestion for names maybe you could do that too via popularity - by entering a state?

Like I said just my two cents.

tyohn··on Ask HN to predict: Will we keep staring at computers for the rest of our lives?
No I really doubt it. I'd guess society will change as well as technology.
tyohn··on Ask YC: For a startup hiring its first employee, what are pros/cons of local vs remote?
I personally have no problem hiring someone to work remotely. In my case; most everyone I've hired to work remotely - I've worked with in the past - so I knew they'd get the work done effectively. If I hired someone I didn't know and they wanted to work remotely I'd bring them in house for a period of time during a probation period - then I'd let them work from anywhere they wanted too.
tyohn··on Ask YC: For a startup hiring its first employee, what are pros/cons of local vs remote?
Do you already have someone in mind or are you planning on going through the interview process?
tyohn··on How to generate sales?
Can I ask what you're selling?
tyohn··on Official Google Blog: What we learned from 1 million businesses in the cloud
I've thought about the trust issue many times... I think there might be a market for a "new" secure/encryption technology/business model focused on securing the cloud.
tyohn··on Facebook May Be Growing Too Fast. And Hitting The Capital Markets Again.
"750 employees and growing"? Why do they need 750 employees?
tyohn··on Ask HN: Rate my startup: IvyLees
Now that you've "opened up parts of the site" and I played around - I think it makes a lot more sense to me. If you can gain some critical mass it just might work. Good luck!
tyohn··on Poll: Which Generation Are You?
I have to agree.
tyohn··on Ask HN: Rate my startup: IvyLees
The design is nice. Is this addressing a real need? I am very close to the "media outlet environment" and I'm not sure if we have a need for such a resource? What are the tool-based things you are talking about? Maybe I just need more convincing?
tyohn··on Poll: Which Generation Are You?
I'm generation X - the worst of all the generations :p
tyohn··on New York Times Running On Fumes
I use to work for a newspaper. At the time (might show my age here) newspapers were switching from traditional cut and paste/film-plate production to digital composition. I had to push and push just get the newspaper to think about stopping the use of knives to cut and paste content and start using digital layouts. The management basically refused to change. Being inside the industry I know they saw the digital age coming - and even though they knew it was inevitable - just like the Trains business of yesterday that didn't realize that they were transportation companies not just train companies - newspapers took to long to understand that they are more than print. From my point of view newspapers should have lead the drive to the online content world instead they stuck to their print... Like I've heard before - its easier to kill a business than it is to fix it.
