tylerpachal··on Distributed Consensus – How Shared Data Is Stored
Lately I have been really enjoying articles like this about distributed programming, and have been doing some code experiments on my own to learn more about it (using Akka right now). Do you have a roadmap for how someone could get into a role like yours?
tylerpachal··on Cloud Spanner is now production-ready
That was a good article, thanks!
tylerpachal··on Introducing Yelp's GraphQL API
I have been using GQL with a Play! in Scala. If anyone else is thinking about doing GQL in Scala I highly recommend using Sangria [0], its well documented and easy to work with.

tylerpachal··on Pattern Matching for Java
I think this is less-rare than you think. In my Scala code, I have a lot of matching on weakly-typed values which come from parsing JSON objects (where I also deal with a lot of optional values).
tylerpachal··on Making the move from Scala to Go
Could you explain this a little bit? I am just getting into Scala, usually I use `sbt run` and `sbt test` while I am working, then `sbt dist` to package my production app. What does `sbt ~ compile` do ?
tylerpachal··on Ask HN: Have you ever worked on a product that was killed by technical debt?
Do you think the same thing could happen with cloud vendors like AWS?
tylerpachal··on Basic Economy Fares Don't Lower Ticket Prices, They Increase Ticket Prices
We have an airline like this in Canada called Porter[0]. They do short flights with ruby props around Eastern/Atlantic Canada as well as the Eastern United States. Usually their tickets are a little bit cheaper however I think their biggest selling feature is that their planes are allowed to land at the Toronto Island airport (which is downtown and a lot closer than the bigger airport) where jet planes are not allowed because they are too noisy.

tylerpachal··on Ask HN: What web framework do you use? Why did you choose it?
Play Framework[1] (in Scala, its also available in Java): * I like programming in Scala * Play is built on Akka[2] (a lot of people use Akka instead of using a full-on framework) * Great testing suite * The documentation is very good * Most components of the framework can be used separately, for example Play has a good asynchronous http client that I use in other projects

tylerpachal··on 'Clean your desk': My Amazon interview experience
A friend of mine interviewed for a tech position with the government (Canada). After the first couple screening interviews the subsequent interviews were all held in a hotel room. Similar to your suggestion, the hotel was picked so it was close to the candidate's house, and the interviewer supplied laptop and such.
tylerpachal··on Ask HN: Who is using Docker/rkt containers in production?
We're running the same setup. How do you find Azure vs AWS/Google?
tylerpachal··on Show HN: Dave – CLI Personal assistant written in Go
My team all use macOS, so it was really easy for me to write a CLI in Go (this library [1] is great), and then run

  go install
to create a full-contained binary that I could distribute to everyone. People can put the binary somewhere on their PATH, for example: `/usr/local/bin`, and then be able to run it like any other shell command.

If you already have python installed then it isn't too much trouble to run a .py file by doing

  python mycli.py
But if you have a bin on your PATH you could just run

  mycli
without having to install Go or any of the dependancies because they're bundled up in the binary.

edit: I should add that it is possible to cross-compile with Go, so if someone on my team wasn't on the same OS as me I could support them as well

tylerpachal··on Ask HN: You've got one month, what's your challenge?
I'd like to enrol in a culinary arts class to learn more about cooking! I think a month would be enough time to complete some courses at one of my local colleges.
tylerpachal··on DeepMind and Blizzard to release StarCraft II as an AI research environment
For anyone looking for more information about Starcraft 2, the world championship is on this weekend and the broadcast for today has just started (16:30EST)

tylerpachal··on DeepMind and Blizzard to release StarCraft II as an AI research environment
This has been around for awhile [1]. They give you an API to use and then you upload your JAR. They have a Twitch channel [2] that is constantly streaming AIs playing against each other in their tournament.

tylerpachal··on DeepMind and Blizzard to release StarCraft II as an AI research environment
I've followed the professional StarCraft 2 scene for a long time now. There were a few players who were famous for having high APMs, here is an over-the-sholder view of one of them [1]. I don't have a reference but believe he used to play in the ~500APM range. That would probably be the upper limit of a human's ability.

tylerpachal··on Ask HN: What cool development languages/tools changed your career?
Came here to say the same thing. Programming in Scala feels elegant and exciting and all of the projects (Akka, Spark, etc) means that there are always new things to learn. Thanks Martin!
tylerpachal··on Programming books you might want to consider reading
Can anyone recommend a good book about compilers? I just watched Martin Odersky's talk from Scala World [1] where he talks about the new Scala compiler he is working on called Dotty [2], but he talks a bit about other compilers and now I am interested to learn more.

tylerpachal··on Ask HN: New OSS Projects: Go or Java?
I was wrestling with the same question a few months ago and ended up choosing Scala! I got to learn something new but could still fall back to things I liked about Java.
tylerpachal··on Ask HN: Is Apple about to kill the Macbooks?
I don't follow the Apple's product news too much, but I was really hoping for the announcement of a new Thunderbolt display now that they have discontinued the current generation (which had been around since 2011).
tylerpachal··on The U.S. Navy’s Big Mistake: Building Tons of Supercarriers
RE: your third point, Japan had an submarine in WW2 (never really saw combat) that could carry and launch three planes:

tylerpachal··on Ask HN: Resources for creating my own database
Thanks! I think I'm mainly interested in writing a graph database because there are less of them available
tylerpachal··on Scala School
Is it possible to see the material even though the course isn't currently running?
tylerpachal··on Why Digital Maps Are Inaccurate in China
I was in Korea for awhile and never really noticed too much of a problem with GMaps. Do you know if Naver Maps is better?
tylerpachal··on Ask HN: DO You Use AWS Lambda? Why? Why Not?
Use Lambda + PhantomJS + D3 to make a lot of visualizations that are saved as images. It works well but the development was a bit of a pain, and finding a PhantomJS binary that was compatible with Amazon's flavour of linux took a little while.
tylerpachal··on 90% of the billion dollar unicorn startups are in trouble
> There are about 144 unicorns right now.

I didn't realize that there are this many unicorns. Or is this a typo?

tylerpachal··on Macbook charger teardown: surprising complexity inside Apple's power adapter
My solution is to pop the spring out of a pen, and wrap the spring around the end of the cable. It achieves the same thing: adds support while still being flexible.
tylerpachal··on How Did Michelin Become the World’s Authority on Restaurants?
I only realized when I watched Jiro Dreams of Sushi [1]. If I remember correctly there is a brief shot of his 5-Star Michelin plaque, which has the company logo on it.

tylerpachal··on Biking The Ho Chi Minh Highway
I really want to do the same trip they did! With less challenges and smaller souvenirs of course.
tylerpachal··on StarCraft: The past, present and future
I was just at the Legacy of the Void launch event at the Coex in Seoul. There was one developer on hand who took questions from the crowd and tried to answer them without giving away any spoilers. There were also a few show matches between popular players, and a wedding for a former Broodwar pro player; it was quite the event.

Even though other genres are a lot more popular than RTS is now, the packed venue makes me optimistic about the future of the Starcraft franchise.

tylerpachal··on The Trading Game
I had Coke and Netflix.
