tylerlh··on How to avoid rewriting your JavaScript application
With that you would end up with something more like Sizzle[0], not necessarily jQuery.

tylerlh··on Startup accused of scamming employees scrubs its online presence
GP's point extends well south of San Francisco. I've lived in the Peninsula/South Bay for a few years and it's pretty much the same down here as it is in SF. Unfortunately for me a commute from the East Bay is out of the question, but I certainly wouldn't mind having that rent!
tylerlh··on Ask HN: How to prepare for a Front-end Developer interview?
There's a pretty good repository of potential questions for front end developer interviews on GitHub[0]. I'd suggest skimming through the list and making sure you've got a decent grasp on most of them.

Ideally you'll get mostly questions that are relevant to what your job will be, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some CS stuff in there as well (basic data structures & algorithms). Good luck!

tylerlh··on San Jose's Google Fiber rollout is delayed to explores alternatives
SJ, sure -- though for other peninsula cities (Mountain View, Palo Alto) I'm curious as to how well this type of solution would fare considering the lack of high rooftops and the lack of space/pervasive NIMBY attitude that happens when someone wants to build something like a tower for p2p transmission.

I was really stoked to see Fiber coming to my house in the near future, but this doesn't look good for places like MV/PA.

tylerlh··on After a year of using Node.js in production
I believe you would be surprised were you to look under the hood.

There are a number of different "UI areas" in Netflix.com -- homepage, titles, signup (multiple flavors of this, depending on how you're signing up), onboarding, member browsing/viewing experiences, account management, numerous partner integrations, etc... not to mention all the work that goes into per-user customization, AB testing, and internationalization.

No offense taken on the question. IMO, if you look at the site and view it as simple then we've done our job correctly. :)

tylerlh··on After a year of using Node.js in production
One of the core tenets of the Netflix culture is "Freedom & Responsibility". In this context it means that each team is free to make calls like that as they see fit. Promises, Observables, Generators, Callbacks -- it's up to your team to determine what makes the most sense.

That said, we do make heavy use of Rx on the API layer (RxJava/RxGroovy). My team isn't currently using RxJs, but I expect that to change in the future. There are a lot of Observable fans here :)

tylerlh··on After a year of using Node.js in production
The Netflix.com site and webapp runs on Node (and talks to a number of services written in mostly JVM based languages). While we encounter challenges just as we would with any other language -- it works for us and I would argue that it's a pretty big application.

There's always a multitude of ways to get something done, and it's up to you to decide what tool will do it best. Don't treat any one language as an end-all-be-all and you might find yourself much happier and more productive. Of course, YMMV.

tylerlh··on The Single Piece of JavaScript on HN
It's a GET request with an auth token passed as a query parameter.
tylerlh··on Async/await: It’s Good and Bad
It matters if you're concerned about keeping the size of your JS payload in production to a minimum. In the Babel example, you're looking at multiple times more lines per async function compared to promises, plus extra execution via regenerator when compiled to ES5.

That said, I'm a fan of async/await -- just not yet for projects where I need to optimize for filesize.

tylerlh··on My Livecoding.tv account deletion saga
The entire premise of participating in YC is to learn from other founders about how to build a successful startup. You're saying that YC doesn't have any reason to try and help founders do better at running their companies?
tylerlh··on My Livecoding.tv account deletion saga
You read the article and see the updated profile on your site, right? I think being slow to respond is the least of your worries.
tylerlh··on My Livecoding.tv account deletion saga
Does YC not provide any kind of guidance or coaching around customer support and PR to founders during the program? Seems like that should be a really important topic, given how situations like this impact not only the reputation of the startup, but also YC itself.
tylerlh··on Fun with Magic
I used Magic to have them find me a moving company that could move me from Mountain View to Palo Alto the next day and they delivered pretty much flawlessly. The movers they found me were skilled, cheaper, and available immediately as opposed to the ones I found myself. All in all, I was pretty impressed with the experience.

tylerlh··on Magic
I think a common sentiment about on-demand service startups is that it can lead to a dangerous situation for the lower-level employee, who is typically working as a 1099. Relatively low pay, and they're responsible for their own benefits, taxes, etc.

This is something I have a lot of interest in at the moment, so if anyone would like to chime in, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

tylerlh··on Bill to Restrict N.S.A. Data Collection Blocked in Vote by Senate Republicans
It's worth noting that the USA Freedom Act would have extended the Patriot Act until the end of 2017.
tylerlh··on Fabric – Mobile developer platform by Twitter
Agreed. It was pretty disappointing to sign up on a "Try it now" form and then be told I'm on a waiting list without mentioning that before. Was looking forward to trying the Crashlytics Beta offering, but I suppose I'll look elsewhere for beta distribution.
tylerlh··on Ask HN: Desktop sharing for Linux as simple as join.me?
Chrome Remote Desktop has a Linux beta version available.
tylerlh··on “We've been acquired and Twitpic will live on”
I'm curious if Twitter finally just bought them so they don't end up with a ton of broken images after they shut down.

I can't imagine someone acquiring twitpic just to continue operating it the same way it has been.

tylerlh··on Berg is shutting down
Crap -- I have a Little Printer still in the box that I've been meaning to play with. Really hope they open source the protocol so I don't end up with a Little Paperweight.
tylerlh··on Fix the versioning
You know what they say...opinions are like assholes...
tylerlh··on Fix the versioning
Jeremy, you make some great points here and I agree with you on most of them -- it's just that Underscore doesn't seem like the right place to start the battle.
tylerlh··on Fix the versioning
That's a fair point. I guess a better solution in my mind is teaching people to be more responsible with their package.json file and consumption of packages (ie reading changelogs), but that's not jashkenas' problem, nor should it be.
tylerlh··on Fix the versioning
This feels like an overly abrasive response that makes me seriously question whether using Underscore moving forward is a good idea. I really hate to say that because I think Jeremy's projects are awesome.

This is the most depended on module on npm. Why are you so intent on alienating the package consumers? IMO, having a version 47.0.0 and such doesn't seem all that terrible to me, and is still just as human readable. Other groups are doing it and it's working just fine (ie Chrome).

tylerlh··on Critics Blame Airbnb for San Francisco's Housing Problems
Oh, sorry, let me correct that, Mountain View has plenty of housing -- if you're willing to pay ~$2700 a month for a two-bedroom apartment built in the 70s, $1.5 million+ for a new house (attached) or $2 million+ for a new, detached house.

My 1br in MV is $2700, and it's not even high end.

tylerlh··on The Abandoned Facebook Tech That Now Helps Power Apple
This was a pretty poorly written article. Lots of name dropping with very little homework done.
tylerlh··on Code Spaces data and backups deleted by hackers
They have existed for a number of years[0]. Even still, being a new service is no excuse for such poor handling of OpSec.

tylerlh··on Lattice's $24.99 FPGA Evaluation Kit
Nice! Thanks for the tip.
tylerlh··on Lattice's $24.99 FPGA Evaluation Kit
Went to order one, but they want $20 for regular ground shipping.

May as well sell it for $45 and ship it for free. At least then I'd be less likely to whine about it.

tylerlh··on Grocery Delivery Service Instacart (YC S12) Raises $44M
I'm a pretty heavy Instacart user, and I'm convinced what they're making on markup eclipses what they make from delivery fees.

Not complaining, just wish the messaging didn't gloss over it as mentioned above.
