twohey··on Ask HN: Integrate Software Solution with Competitor's?
I have experience doing this and am happy to talk offline as this is a complicated situation - just shoot me an email and I'll make time.

You will need to create organizational accountability for the integration and define what success looks like and how it will be measured. You will also want to avoid an "us vs them" situation inside the two companies.

There are a ton of subtleties in how to do that above that vary with organizational dynamics, but you must ensure that at a senior level you have alignment from both organizations or there will be a lot of shared misery.

twohey··on Inferno, Part 3: Let's Make a Filesystem
Dominic Giampaolo wrote "Practical File System Design with the Be File System" which he has made freely available at: http://www.nobius.org/~dbg/practical-file-system-design.pdf

I found it to be well written and interesting when I was a university student first going deep on the subject.

The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System (2nd Edition) by McKusick is also well written and covers some of the same ground.

Of the 110, two are dead - one shot in a bar and another in a drive-by shooting - three are in prison, six graduated from college, and six more are on track to graduate.

It seems rather depressing to me that the college graduation rate by 23 is under 10%. Talk about different worlds

Ness Computing, Los Altos CA. Happy to hire H1B

Ness Computing's mission is to make search personal. By combining its understanding of human nature with its expertise in search, recommendations and social networking, Ness delivers experiences that are more deeply personal than ever before. We are aggressively hiring backend systems and machine learning experts.

You might be right for the machine learning team if you want to work together with specialists on real-world data challenges others consider impossible. You want to be part of a team where everyone takes ownership of problem-solving, from ideas all the way through implementation. Everything the ML team builds is product-driven to solve a specific customer pain. While we are looking for people who are experts in a specific area, we believe that the best solutions come from collaboration. We expect you to apply your expertise to domains you have not previously worked in.

You might be right for the platform team if you love technical challenges and are described by others as a self-starter. You are motivated to produce effective and elegant solutions to new problems. Your role will be part architect and part systems builder and as key member of a highly skilled team, and this excites you.

Feel free to contact me directly at me email in my profile. You can find more information at http://www.likeness.com/jobs.html

twohey··on Ask HN: Who Is Hiring? (September 2012)
Los Altos: Machine Learning Scientist. Full Time (H1B okay) - Ness Computing http://likeness.com

We are machine learning specialists who work together on real-world challenges. Everyone on our team takes ownership of problem-solving, from ideas all the way through implementation. Our favorite types of problems are the ones that others consider impossible.

Everything the ML team builds is product-driven to solve a specific customer pain. While we are looking for people who are experts in a specific area, we believe that the best solutions come from collaboration. We expect people to apply their expertise to domains they have not previously worked in.

We use principled machine learning approaches, and encode product-level intuition and needs, but are comfortable with using heuristics to get the last mile.

You should be familiar with recent ML literature.

Bonus points if you have a deep background in one of the following: + information retrieval / search ranking, natural language processing + collaborative filtering, ontology management / data normalization + data mining packages such as Weka, SAS, EViews, Matlab and R + "big-data" frameworks such as Hadoop, HBase, or Cassandra

If what we are doing sounds interesting to you, please drop me a line.

Los Altos, CA -- Ness (likeness.com) -- Local, H1B

Ness Computing's mission is to make search personal. By combining its understanding of human nature with its expertise in search, recommendations and social networking, Ness delivers experiences that are more deeply personal than ever before.

Ness is looking for an eager, fast-learning iOS developer with a passion for creating software that delights users. We’re looking for someone who wants to help push the platform to its limits, with implementation approaches beyond even Apple’s first-party apps.

You are someone who shares our love of beautifully designed, immersive products. You are detail-oriented, believe the little things matter, and won't consider a task complete until everything is just right. These qualities are more important than experience, but practice implementing user interfaces and iOS applications is a plus. An ideal candidate will know Objective-C and Cocoa Touch well, but is always ready to learn more.

If this sounds like something you'd like to help build, please shoot me an email.

twohey··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (November 2011)
Ness Computing. Los Altos, CA (H1B applicants welcome)

At Ness we're building a personalized search engine which combines personal data about an individual along with signals from their social graph and delivers uniquely tailored results for each query. Our first product focuses on restaurants and has been featured in the App Store since our launch 8 weeks ago.

Behind the scenes we're combining collaborative filtering and other forms of machine learning with traditional information retrieval to predict what users will like, explain our prediction to users, and rank what they will want to do in the moment.

Doing all this requires well architected, scalable systems for pushing lots of data and answering queries with minimal latency.

I know this is only the broadest possible overview and I'd be happy to talk if you'd like to learn more. My email is in my profile.

You can see the product at http://www.likeness.com

twohey··on Ceph: open source petabyte scale distributed storage
From http://ceph.newdream.net/roadmap/

"We hope to have the system usable (for non-critical applications) by the end of 2009 in a single-mds configuration. Even then, however, we would not recommend going without backups for any important data, or deploying in situations where availability is critical."

It looks interesting, but not ready for prime time. Anyone using this in the wild?

twohey··on Almost a third of our portfolio is under attack by patent trolls.
I really feel for smaller companies here as I know people with great products who have been trolled out of existence.

I wonder if there is a non-legislative fix available because I've heard about programmers wanting patent reform for as long as I've been programming and I believe almost no substantial progress has been made.

Brad mentions that larger companies have more resources available for fighting patent trolls. What if VCs set aside a pool of capital for defending their investments from patent trolls as part of raising their funds?

The idea would be to create a pool money whose size would ward off patent trolls. I'm sure it would take a few victories in court, but it could establish a precedent and change the game.

It certainly seems easier than attempting to reform patents.

twohey··on Hemlock, the open-source, real-time web framework, now available.
Their layout is pretty busted on Safari :(

They use flash for display and XMPP polling with ejabberd on the backend. I can understand some of the motivation for this now, but I wonder how much will be obviated by HTML 5 with server-sent events and Web sockets. I guess it will depend on how quickly those things make it into IE.

twohey··on Poll: What do you think of Google Wave?
It seems like this is really "enterprise collaboration" done right. Think of how many places installed lotus notes or ms exchange to get some of these features.

Sprinkle in some calendaring and todo robots and you have an extremely powerful collaboration tool. Add in search and you have a new way to manage ad-hoc information.

It will be interesting to see how they come up with efficient representations when these document trees get to be large.

One downside of wave is that I haven't seen anything about how to stop spam. That was a major problem for email, and is becoming a problem on twitter too. Throw in differing social contexts like proper distribution of tweets for spymaster and you have some thorny social issues.
