Head of Engineering at HiHello

Previously EIR at Microsoft / VP Engineering at ClassPass / VP Engineering at Nines / Co-Founder and CTO of fitmob / Co-Founder and CTO of Ness Computing / Early at Palantir / Stanford PhD dropout

I've been trying to make the world a better place via technology for as long as I can remember. If you've got ideas on how to do that I'm sure we'd enjoy talking.

twohey··on Amazon WS Crypto Sigs v2 Broken (Even Amazon Can't Get Crypto Right)
These things are very difficult to get right, and very hard to check. Sadly the protocol model checking work of people like John Mitchell at Stanford is not close to being a plug in tool implementors can use.

I had the (mis)fortune of having to implement something similar and it took me quite awhile to make sure it was correct in both design and implementation. Do you want to run cryptographic tests for randomness? Do you know how? If not, stay away.

I really agree with tptacek, avoid implementing crypto like the plague.

twohey··on Clang vs. GCC memory use graphs
It's nice to see competition in the compiler space. We all benefit from improved tools, and the llvm / clang folks are doing a great job making better tools. </fan>

Hopefully they'll have some more announcements at WWDC

twohey··on Ask HN: Rate my startup, Nrds
As others have mentioned: it is not clear in 10 seconds what you do. That and your demo is pages of text, nothing I can interact with.

I need to be able experience your product in some way. Reading about your promises of a revolution in looking at data is not enough. It comes across as vaporware.

twohey··on Ask HN: Video Screenshot Software for Documentation Purposes?
I believe you want the following thread http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=436523

FYI, I found this by using searchyc on "screen capture"

twohey··on Ask HN: Please review our web app - User Interface Throwdowns
I'm probably being unfair, but I want to "feel" the proposed interaction and the single picture + text does not do it for me. I know that people are proposing and not implementing a new interface but, to me, web interfaces hinge a lot on interactions.

Maybe if there was some way to storyboard an interaction, I'm not really sure.

Also, there should be some form of anonymous voting, I didn't feel like letting this thing onto my twitter.

twohey··on Ask HN: Should I care to support IE6?
As a data point, we see 53% of our traffic from some flavor of IE with a breakdown (for IE) of:

IE-6 / IE-7 / IE-8

39% / 55% / 6%

For us, this sadly means that supporting IE-6 is mandatory.

twohey··on Ask HN: Do you have any code or projects of your own you would like to talk about instead?
As a former compiler junkie that sounds interesting, can you elaborate?
twohey··on New Stock platform
I'm not a professional stock picker, but I found the interface confusing. After I made an account and logged in I was not sure what I should be doing or where I should go.

I managed to click around and find google, but then accidentally clicked a trade button and now I have an open trade for 3 shares of google at 100.17! I have no idea how that happened or what it means.

Your site is also a bit slow, but I'm assuming that is because you are under provisioned and this is an alpha.

Good luck.

twohey··on Ask HN: How to sync up the experience for large number of users of a web app?
This is one outline, but you need to be aware of edge cases because networks partition and clocks drift. You should make sure that you gracefully handle (or at the minimum aware of) the following cases:

1. Some of your clients lose network connectivity, so when they see an image they respond, but their network drops out.

2. Some clients have incredible clock skew. This can happen due to any number of very improbable events like time zone changes or faulty motherboards, but it does happen.

Distributed synchronization really depends on what kind of experience you are trying to provide.

For example, if you are showing slides and you want everyone to be "synchronized" you could have all clients poll for the next image, load it in the background, and then notify you that they have it. Once all clients have notified you they have the image you would then push out a command to the clients to display this next image.

Your synchronization needs may be totally different if you are trying to provide a different experience. There are some rather fundamental limits on distributed coordination. For a starting point, see "Time, Clocks, and the Ordering of Events in a Distributed System" by Leslie Lamport available at http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/people/lamport/pubs/t...
