twfarland··on Class Hierarchies? Don't Do That
My js style began with a heavy usage of classes. I then left that for prototype composition. Recently, I've arrived at a style influenced by Haskell's separation of functions and data - namespaced objects of functions that act on plain json-serializable data. Flexible, simple, and perfomant. I don't miss 'this' at all.
twfarland··on The startup freelancer
Would you be willing to detail said life hacks a bit?
twfarland··on The pleasantness of Om
Om looks interesting for more complex stuff, but I agree with others that the jquery version shown for comparison is a bit baroque. Here's a simpler one for comparison https://gist.github.com/twfarland/9285304 Short, magic-free, and sufficient for something this simple.
twfarland··on Failed to delight. Post-mortem of Delight IO
Agreed. Even the most world-changing idea would only be as strong as its presentation.
twfarland··on Show HN: Bateman, a stock trading system I'm working on
Someone should hire you just for your ability to name your projects. "How'd a nitwit like you get so tasteful?"
twfarland··on What's up with HN?
Not sure if this works everywhere, but: ▲
twfarland··on Are functional languages inherently slow?
Excellent point - a formal system can't have 'speed.'
twfarland··on Show HN: Music for Geeks and Nerds
What a beautiful idea. Will a physical copy be available at some time?
twfarland··on Is Berlin the new home for tech start-up business? [video]
I'm an NZ expat who has lived in Berlin for the last few years. While Berlin is cool, let me present a caveat...

I've enjoyed the music scene and cheap rent, but have experienced major culture shock. It is a very intense place, full of contradiction, i.e. extremely open-minded in some areas and absurdly conservate in others. Berlin alternatively challenges and reaffirms one's various values.

Sometimes it seems like the 'adults' have left the city and left the 'kids' in charge. At other times, it feels impossible to breathe without violating some ponderous rule. Many are sucked into what is called a 'Berlinquency' - an existence in which one is spoilt by the hedonism, looseness, and condusiveness to self-obsession this place affords.

The tech scene is ok. There are a lot of clones. Some great meetups, though. It all seems to be on the up. Watch this space. And visit for a month before deciding to move here.

twfarland··on Five Men Agree To Stand Directly Under An Exploding Nuclear Bomb
They all sound kind of high. Although such a power is terrible, it must be pretty exhilarating.
twfarland··on Ask HN: What one thing would you tell your younger self?
Some people do tell these things to their kids. Really.
twfarland··on Ask HN: What one thing would you tell your younger self?
You don't have to impress anyone. You don't have to 'be' anyone. Be a Cynic, a Hedonist in the Epicurean sense.
twfarland··on John Resig: Secrets of the JavaScript Ninja Update
Really respect that he chose to prioritise his personal life. Reminds me of the lesson I learnt from Herbert and Harry as a child. http://www.penguin.com.au/products/9780140567830/herbert-har...
twfarland··on Avoiding Depression While Not Running a $1B Company
Dude. It is ok. The huge valuation these guys had for their flippant startup in 2012 will be of little importance in the long run, and when we are on our deathbeds.
twfarland··on Responding to Beggars
I never give money to beggars after having seen how they operate in Berlin. The standard ones are extremely pushy, and in areas like Ku'damm, there are organised gangs of women who bring their children with them. I've seen them converge and hand over money to a central man at the same spot day after day. He doesn't look poor.
twfarland··on Seedcamp Tallinn: making the Estonian president proud
Estonia is looking quite intriguing... the low/simple tax thing could be quite tempting for those of us sick of the high/ponderous western european taxes.
twfarland··on Poll: Do you have a CS degree?
I'm also a fine arts grad gone tech. I feel like a total outsider in this world but can't help being fascinated by it. I hope that those with an education that emphasises communication and aesthetics can bring something new to the tech world.
twfarland··on Learn to read a binary font by reading a story
I love this kind of thing. I tried something similar a few years ago, after visiting Turkey and seeing their language. I'd had a single character for each sound, though (i.e. 'å' instead of 'ei' for the 'a' sound in 'late').
twfarland··on Learn to read a binary font by reading a story
This is a really nice idea. Reminds me of Guy Steele's 'Growing a language' talk (http://video.google.de/videoplay?docid=-8860158196198824415) and generally of building a formal system by combining primitives.
twfarland··on Down To Fax is Chatroulette for fax machines
I'm utterly convinced that some people are missing the part of their brain that detects satire.
twfarland··on How Reddit ranking algorithms work
To understand this, I translated it into Racket: https://gist.github.com/2214978
twfarland··on With EveryArt (YC W12) you don't have to be afraid of commissioning art
The decision not to target the Fine Arts world is wise - an egalitarian marketplace would go against everything they stand for.
twfarland··on A Vote for CSS Variables
This wouldn't make css any more powerful than it can be when treated as a compilation target. You can get all the logic you need in a preprocessor embedded in another language, e.g for js I made this: http://github.com/twfarland/son

New styling possibilities would be more interesting, e.g layer blend modes.

twfarland··on Designers read this and developers will love you
Check this first: http://www.pixelmator.com/ - works like a lighter/prettier Fireworks, currently only 30 bucks, and no annoying licensing thingy. Mac-only, but most designers are on mac anyway.
twfarland··on Designers read this and developers will love you
A quick win: Instead of Photoshop, which is overkill for web graphics, use Fireworks or Pixelmator.
twfarland··on Right versus pragmatic
This is related to the concept of 'desire lines' used by architects.
twfarland··on Hasp: An S-Expression to Haskell Compiler
Glad to see another attempt at this righteous marriage. The piping approach is very tasteful.

I tried to get this working with Racket (on osx) but hit too many blocks and ended up going with Gambit, which works well so far.

twfarland··on Learn from Haskell - Functional, Reusable JavaScript
The currying function shown can be made more flexible:

   var _slice = Array.prototype.slice;

   var curry = function() {
     var args = _slice.call(arguments);
     return function() {
       var args2 = _slice.call(arguments);
       return args[0].apply(this, args.slice(1).concat(args2));
     };
   };
As can the composition func:

   var compose = function(f, g) {
     return function() {
       var args =_slice.call(arguments);
       return f(g.apply(this, args));
     };
   };
twfarland··on Flailing Fast: A Startup Story
Refreshingly cynical. It makes me want to just open a bar or something, rather than do battle with TOADs, JOCKs, Product Management Pirates and Social Media Ninjas.
twfarland··on S-Expressions: The Fat-Free Alternative to JSON
Yeah - I make my templates in much the style you describe, and render them with https://github.com/twfarland/don.
