twfarland··on Uber Investigating Sexual Harassment Claims by Ex-Employee
With that evidence, the CEO should not only fire the creeps involved, but name and shame them. Incredibly damaging, not just for PR reasons, but for missing out on talented people and allowing toxicity.
twfarland··on Uber Investigating Sexual Harassment Claims by Ex-Employee
It doesn't seem like they're trying to actively force women out. It seems like they're such creeps that no women (or grown men) would want to be there.
twfarland··on Ask HN: Does anyone dream of code?
Yep, and it's not pleasant when you're lucid enough to know you're dreaming, but not lucid enough to be able to reason properly. It's just a general feeling of trying to solve something, without any payoff.
twfarland··on Ask HN: Digital Nomads: How do you manage taxes?
The world hasn't really caught up with the reality of remote work, but for now, I just pay taxes where I reside most of the time.
twfarland··on Ask HN: What inspires you to persevere through adversity?
pure spite
twfarland··on Ask HN: Does anyone here have an art degree?
I got a BFA, but started out a part-time web dev job to pay for university. I graduated with no interest in art, so went full-time in web dev. Been doing it for ten years since, and now build and lead teams. Got there through continual self-directed learning (books, courses, open source experiments). Slowly getting interested in art, again. The biggest benefits of the art school training:

- A habit of taking nothing for granted, interrogating everything. - Comfortable dealing with ambiguity. - A broad communication toolkit.

twfarland··on Show HN: Write ajax requests with template literals
Such mischief. Template literals make me feel very yucky. A totally unnecessary complication.
twfarland··on Announcing TypeScript 2.1
I've stopped using those OO-ish paradigms in JS (no 'this', 'new', 'prototype'), but even still, have much preferred using TS. You can get a long way (and have great flexibility) with only interfaces and generic functions.
twfarland··on The Mega Rich Have Found an Unlikely New Refuge
Because it's fresh.
twfarland··on The Mega Rich Have Found an Unlikely New Refuge
That's why I'm moving back to my rural home town. The lifestyle is better, too.
twfarland··on Show HN: Wave function collapse algorithm
Mindblowing... could this technique also be applied to music?
twfarland··on Why I Quit Coffee and How That's Been Working Out
I quit coffee two years ago to help curb anxiety problems. I noticed I get less done, now, but what I do get done is of a higher quality, and I am less obsessive. It seems that slow, expansive thinking is more useful than turbocharged, focused thinking for certain kinds of work. Definitely a better default mode, at least.
twfarland··on Why we should stop using Grunt and Gulp
I just feel sorry for anyone who has to deal with '13 other things' in their build.
twfarland··on JSX: XML-like syntax extension to ECMAScript – Draft specification
I have found it easy enough to just use json-serializable literals to represent html, e.g:

    ['div', {id: 'main'},
        ['h1', 'Some title'],
        ['p', 'Some text']]
I wrote a little function to turn this kind of thing into an html string (https://github.com/twfarland/don), but it could also be used as the view descriptor for some kind of view component ala React. Might work on that...
twfarland··on Irken Language – A Scheme with parametric polymorphism
Exciting stuff. As an intermediate Schemer I've been looking for something like this and have had some syntax ideas, mostly about ruthlessly sticking to a minimalist prefix notation, but also a little Haskell-inspired. To illustrate briefly, I've converted one of the examples on this page to the style I've been thinking about:

https://gist.github.com/twfarland/f030cb2853cdf28b25ed

I'm not sure how possible this would be from an implementation perspective, though, that stuff is way beyond me. I just like thinking about syntax/semantics.

twfarland··on Programmer to Manager
Your second example is exactly what I had in mind. It reminds me of the final group listed in this quote from General Kurt Von Hammerstein-Equord:

"I divide my officers into four groups. There are clever, diligent, stupid, and lazy officers. Usually two characteristics are combined. Some are clever and diligent -- their place is the General Staff. The next lot are stupid and lazy -- they make up 90 percent of every army and are suited to routine duties. Anyone who is both clever and lazy is qualified for the highest leadership duties, because he possesses the intellectual clarity and the composure necessary for difficult decisions. One must beware of anyone who is stupid and diligent -- he must not be entrusted with any responsibility because he will always cause only mischief."

twfarland··on Programmer to Manager
Every manager of programmers I've known who was not themselves a competent programmer caused more harm than good. Take that for what you will.
twfarland··on A Buddhist monk confronts Japan’s suicide culture (2013)
Yes, things are different elsewhere.
twfarland··on Show HN: Webhook – Static site generator with a CMS
Extremely nice UX design! I started building something like this (static pages with cms) recently, it yours looks like a good enough realisation of the concept that I'll go with it instead of continuing my project.
twfarland··on #Love: Virtually No Sex
Proper love is not so easily sublimated, nor is proper sex
twfarland··on Performance comparison of Functional C++ 11, Java 8, JavaScript and Wolfram
I had a quick go at this with Racket: https://gist.github.com/twfarland/a9d8ce9eff22b39d3136

I'm not sure if I got the problem right, because it solves the hardest case almost instantly (2006 lions, 2055 wolves, 2017 goats -> 4023 lions), in 0.8s on my macbook air.

I used a general search algo that I've also used in the past for the missionaries and cannibals and snake cube puzzles.

It uses a set to store the past states seen, instead of deduping a list.

twfarland··on Painting with Code
I've been playing a bit with generative art in scheme. The author talks about finding a way to code visual ideas. It can work the other way around, too, i.e. the algorithms we use in our programming work can themselves be a rich source of visual ideas. Inhabiting this space of translation between the visual and 'algorithmic' minds can be quite fun.

twfarland··on “Let’s, Like, Demolish Laundry”
I still have trouble believing it isn't (very dedicated) satire.
twfarland··on Developer Anxiety, we’re not alone
I've struggled with this for years. Burned out 3 times. I've done CBT, meditation, and tried various medications. I've quit drinking, I eat well, and exercise often. These all helped a bit, but I was still panicky. Nothing helped more than deciding to spend less time sitting manipulating symbols on a screen and more time moving my body, more time in nature, more time with people. I've also resolved to stay away from toxic jobs, no matter how well they pay.
twfarland··on Who owns the fish? A Common Lisp solution to "Einstein's Riddle" (2004)
Haskell lists also work nicely for nondeterministic computation.
twfarland··on Wu-Tang Clan Offered $5M for New Album Only Available as One Copy
All of us asserting what Art is or Art isn't are dancing to RZA's tune. This is probably a desired outcome of his gesture. It might annoy some, but it will be quite effective.
twfarland··on Wu-Tang Clan Offered $5M for New Album Only Available as One Copy
They might even do it themselves. It wouldn't contradict their aim to generate and control the buzz.
twfarland··on Wu-Tang Clan Offered $5M for New Album Only Available as One Copy
This is romantic but unrealistic. By its nature, Art tends to resist the isn'ts and shouldn'ts.
