EDIT/Whinging: Welp, scratch that, kitty requires an OS X one version higher than what apple will allow me to install. And while it is an older MBP from 2010, at least it's fast and reliable. AND it has the multitude of ports that I like. And the magsafe.
I'm sure I'm venting into an echo changer, but, here goes. Why won't Apple simply provide me (an option to buy) a modern solid mid-level 15" rMBP for under $2000. I bought mine for $1700 and it came with a $200 ipod as a gift (sold on eBay).
Give me that. A rMBP, with all the ports, plus the new USB-C. They could leave out some of the stuff that's pricy.
Ya, give me a new version of what I have, and will last at least another 8 years (fully supported by MacOS releases), and price it under $2000. That I would buy. When I replace this one, I'm just going to have to buy something to linux or Windows (probably both, realistically), since I've been priced out the product I would have normally purchased and recommended.
* When copying a file in the gui, a progress window doesn't pop-up for the operation. Took me a little while to realize there is now a little icon on the window's titlebar that shows a pie-chart style of progress. Until I look for that icon, it feels like I don't know if the copy even started. * The "start menu?"/launcher thing blows up into a big, full-screen, icon menu. Seems mentally jarring to have all of my current work overlaid by the launcher. * And, my biggest gripe is the least consequential, but, I want my wobbly windows and 3D desktop cube back! There, I admitted it. I used them and liked it :)
Apparently, after several months of no use, the hard drive bearings had a tendency to stick, and the temporary solution that often worked was to have the client lift the front of the box a few inches off the desk and let it drop, unseizing the bearing.
A lot of reactions along the lines of "I can't believe that worked!"
I was talking to a couple of guys about what I had been doing on my C=64, and when I mentioned the assembly stuff I was writing, one of them said, "How can you possibly write anything with only three registers?!" (just the accumulator and x/y registers). I was wondering what the big deal was since that was the only architecture I had known at that point. Every game and utility I had were only using three registers, so it was already proven to me that three were "enough".
It's funny how you can just adapt and work with whatever is available, and that becomes your norm. Especially when you don't even realize there are other options out there.
Those were the days!
It's still my daily driver for dev work, email & browsing, but El Capitan is the furthest I can take the OS, and I'm already running into some software that requires the newer OSes.
I've just been hanging onto the hope that a suitable MBP replacement with proper ports will be available by the time I need to upgrade, which will be 1st quarter 2019.
If the action is to move forward with something or not, I think I prefer the "next"-type button to be on the right, and "cancel" or "back" on the left, probably far left.
But, my thinking does violate the "pick one and be consistent" suggestion. So... I dunno :)
True, and there's been at least one, probably many, actual study done that came to that conclusion.
Small nitpick (I'm sorry, I couldn't stop myself!), their action doesn't get them "under the terminal velocity," it lowers what their terminal velocity is. It's just the speed at which the wind resistance is enough to prevent further acceleration by gravity. It's terminal as in the end of something (acceleration), not terminal as in the predicted death of the something.
> Easy thing to say. But imagine Zuckerberg had hired you to code the first version of his site, paid you a few thousand bucks, and then he went on to be one of the richest men in America?
The GP still has it right. Paid for a task. Done. It would be different if he toiled away for 100 hours/week for no pay, with the hope of having a hit. As originally described, he has no more of a claim than the guy that made Zuck a sandwich at the food truck.
However, El Capitan is the last OSX that will install on it, and this year even the Turbotax software gave me a warning that their software for next year will not run on my system and I'll have to either get a newer one or use their web product.
Edit: Pretty much what edanm said. I really should do a page refresh before replying when the tab has been open for a while :)
I think I got them from www.bargain-bulk-sock-sales.com. Someone here mentioned them (don't remember if they endorsed or merely named) in a previous sock thread.
Do enough people take off the day after Thanksgiving that it's considered a holiday? I don't get Black Friday off unless I specifically request it. Otherwise it's just a normal workday (though often the office is empty that day, so I guess it's a distinction without a difference).
If it was something you guys did, awesome, thanks!
