tvaughan··on Getting Older Isn't What You Think
Can relate to both. There aren’t a lot of winters left where I’ll be able to ski. The future no longer feels infinite. I do not have all of the time in the world to do the things I enjoy. But, and my younger self would be very upset with me, I am very happily done with the hussle.

> But these days, there’s nothing lovelier than a Saturday morning with a bit of jazz or classical playing, pottering about the kitchen, and then being tucked up in bed before 10pm. Wild.

Play with the dogs. Smoke some weed, a nice meal and play cards with the wife. Don’t need much more.

tvaughan··on Trump's Trade War Escalates as China Retaliates with 34% Tariffs
What? The US President has said repeatedly that tariffs are an easy money maker with no adverse side-effects. China is about to experience the boom times just like everyone in the US is now. You heard the US President’s comments about the recent jobs report, right?
tvaughan··on US accidentally sent Maryland father to Salvadorian prison, can't get him back
This isn’t an accident. They said they’d do this. People voted for this. This is what some people want to happen. No one should be surprised by this. On the campaign trail Trump promised to deport 20 million people. They’re aren’t 20 million undocumented people in the US. The only way you can deport 20 million people is to deport a lot people who have no reason whatsoever to be deported.
tvaughan··on Self-Hosting like it's 2025
For our startup, I decided we’d self-host as much as possible. We have one server in our office with Traefik for “firewall” and SSL termination, and our backend services are handled by Incus. Our only paid services are Tailscale and Postmark. We run things like forgejo and mattermost for our internal development work, as well as things like elasticsearch and kibana for observability into our products (100ish embedded devices distributed globally). So far so good.

tvaughan··on GitHub Copilot: The Agent Awakens
Yup. Even in the 90s it was Microsoft’s plan to turn software development into just clicking buttons, e.g. Visual Studio. Just think of all of the business value the middle managers at a Fortune 1000 could produce with a bunch of cheap labor in some underdeveloped country with only three months of training (paid by them) to learn which buttons do which

tvaughan··on Happy 400th birthday to the world’s oldest bond
Can’t tell what exactly they think is in UF. Perhaps you mean the principle is in UF? That’s pretty meaningless though. The actual loan amount is converted to pesos when it’s finalized (the process can take months), and the APR is just some percentage of that.

Source: Live in Chile, have mortgage in Chile in pesos.

tvaughan··on Happy 400th birthday to the world’s oldest bond
Rents are in UF. I’ve never seen a mortgage in UF. Some savings accounts also pay “interest” in UF.
tvaughan··on Jeff Bezos killed Washington Post endorsement of Kamala Harris
Well said. Journalists also don’t have to give equal weight to the other side when the other side are whackadoodles
tvaughan··on The Static Site Paradox
I was surprised at how hard it was to find a designer who could make a simple html and css only website. Just having to dip my toe in this world for a good-looking but mostly non-functional website gave me all kinds of ick.

Oh, https://sumar.io is a form handler for static websites available under the AGPL.

tvaughan··on Some of us like "interdiff" code review
I think the "hard part" for people is keeping commits focused on just one change. Commits should be crafted to help reviewers, but what I see mostly is a bunch of random commits that look more like a backup of each days progress.
tvaughan··on Clojure 1.12.0 is now available
> So not sure what you're referring to here exactly?

That the size or pace of this release alone should cause worry about future hairballs.

tvaughan··on Clojure 1.12.0 is now available
Add to which, a lot of "new, big features" come in libraries, not the core language itself.
tvaughan··on The workers have spoken: They're staying home
Yeah, I shared a small, nondescript office with another developer because we wanted to separate our work life from our home life. It was a 15 minute walk away, and had none of the distractions of a real office.
tvaughan··on Why is Chile so long?
There isn’t. Especially in the south. Floods, fires, and killer bears. It’s like The Purge, but every day. Don’t come.
tvaughan··on Facebook banned website that links to critical article, claims phishing
Well said. I would add another option, they should be public utilities
tvaughan··on Automated Unit Test Improvement Using Large Language Models at Meta
Point 3 is the key. Code coverage should only be measured by tests that only use the “external API.”
