ttol··on Apple letter about iPhone 4
I could care less about the signal problem. The proximity sensor thing is insanely annoying. I am much much more likely to end the call or put it on mute than I am to drop the call due to reception issues. I've exchanged the phone once already and the replacement phone has the same issue. At first, I thought it was my face (shape? texture?), or the way I was holding it (am I suppose to push it with force against my ear to make sure zero space is between the phone and me?). No luck. Right now, all my calls have issues with it unless I put it on speaker phone. But then, I shift the problem from my end to the receiver's end (other side: "what? I can't hear you, can you repeat that, wayne?"). I'd rather them fix how the proximity works, than fool around with how the antenna displays.

EDIT: It seems Apple introduced the bar bug in OS update 2.1 that "improves the accuracy of the 3G signal". Graphical representation of that is here (Source: Gruber): http://fscked.co.uk/post/754590440/this-infographic-hopefull...

So, RDF was hard coded into the bar display (50% = 5 bars?), and the sudden drop shows up if you're at the floor of that green bar, then you use your hand to cover the phone and force it to drop slightly, it will go into freefall mode since you're now crossing the threshold. Fix is to remove the RDF.

ttol··on A Robot That Balances on a Ball
Prerequisite before usage: Extremely smooth hard surface with close to zero defects.

Warning: Use on soft surface may result in the machine dislodging itself from the ball. Also, any obstructions, such as holes or other obstacles, may result in machine failure.

ttol··on My Co-Founder Doesn't Want to Commit. Pls Help.
ask the CTO cofounder what it would take for him to drop everything and move to US, then either negotiate that or achieve what he's asking for.

from his perspective, he created the core product, and you've put in some initial seed capital and drum up interest. his opportunity cost is very high so he'll need something to balance out the risk..

ttol··on When a co-founder dies
My condolences for your loss. It must be hard.

My partner and I recently thought about this scenario for us and decided that one way to ensure business continuity is to have a key man insurance for each other. We took out the policies a little while ago on top of other insurances.

ttol··on IPhone 3GS Jailbreak released (run on XP, not Vista or 7)
Works for iPhone 3GS. Don't run it on Vista or 7 -- works great from XP.

Literally takes seconds to jailbreak -- much faster than previous generations of JB (like PwnageTool, RedSn0w, or QuickPWN).

That feature is neat and gives insight into the way people write. Would be just as interesting to see a playback of versioned source code files in SVN / CVS..

I posted to YC about the bootstrapping aspect of it (at 3am -- it didn't make the front page but contained interesting feedback).

Basically, we did it successfully by taking it to extreme with no outside VC or angels. Profitable with millions in revenue. It CAN be done.

ttol··on AllAdvantage VP: "When the IPO market froze and CPM rates collapsed the burn rate was astronomical"
Haha, thanks! Some other projects I did was i2hub (largest college p2p), Lancraft (warcraft hack), Nestea2 (large scale security issue), scenereview (ranked higher than craigslist before I sold it), irc admin at the oldest efnet server irc.colorado.edu, and a bunch of others. MyAdvantage ("Get Paid to Sleep") was one of the projects that was most used, but never seen... ;-) I'm also involved in the dispute between ConnectU and Facebook, but that is coming to a head relatively shortly...
ttol··on AllAdvantage VP: "When the IPO market froze and CPM rates collapsed the burn rate was astronomical"
Yup, it was pretty wild. MyAdvantage was the first of its kind back then, before all the clones came out. It still did the best job, in my opinion. I remember a few times I had to duck out of some classes when I was a junior in high school and go to the boy's room to attend a conference meeting because there was some crazy new attack on the ViewBar. This was before cell phones were popular and inexpensive. Before they ran out of business, they still owed me about $26K for that month. Kept delaying, and then they went bankrupt.
ttol··on AllAdvantage VP: "When the IPO market froze and CPM rates collapsed the burn rate was astronomical"
That was me. When I wrote it, I didn't know millions of people would download it and would spawn the auto-surf genre of apps. It ended up making me ranked 15 on their pyramid with over 60,000 people underneath me. During the hey-day, I was getting great checks -- not bad for a 16 year old back then. I also ended up being a consultant for them. I still keep in contact with the guys there who have since moved on, but thanks for the good memories -- glad to know people still remember one of the things I wrote!
ttol··on Are there good solutions for age verification?
I noticed on a few commercial sites (I believe it was an Anheuser-Busch site) that asked for your name and city, state (and possibly email for unique identifier?). Then, it magically age verified you. It was pretty nifty.

I believe they must have used a product like ChoicePoint's Age Verification (http://www.choicepoint.com/business/financial/ageverif_fs.html). Basically a database of public records.

Hope that helps, Wayne Chang
