tt_dev··on Can you take an ox to Oxford?
The person didn’t actually ride an ox cart anywhere.

They looked at the law, saw “motor vehicle” and said that an ox cart doesn’t have a motor so should be fine.

tt_dev··on A worker fell into a nuclear reactor pool
This is bad but cavity water radiation is usually very weak. Ingestion could be bad but its not like he swallowed a uranium isotope which would be catastrophic.

tt_dev··on Japan's most sacred Shinto shrine rebuilt every 20yrs for more than a millennium
> "Asked about his relationship to the cypress trees that are cultivated for the shrine, Ikeda, the lumber expert, had a one-word answer: “Deep.”

Forty years ago, when he was 24, he drove his grandfather to participate in the tree-felling ceremony. “He said to me, ‘Do you know that the trees cry?’

“I answered, ‘No way, how could a tree cry?’”

But as they watched woodsmen chop down the cypress, “the sound of the axes echoed across the mountains, and after about an hour, when the axe struck the core of the tree, the scent of the cypress filled the air, flowing like blood,” he said.

At the final axe stroke, as the wood snapped, “the sound it made was like a shriek, a high-pitched ‘keee’ sound, and then the tree fell with a thunderous thud. In that moment, I thought, ‘Ah... it really cried.’ I felt as if the tree wept, mourning its own life, as if it knew its life was precious.”"

This was like sipping hot tea in the rain.

tt_dev··on Rails Needs New Governance
So what if he’s right leaning and assertive in his views. Still a good framework, still good direction.

I don’t follow why a difference in politics affects engineering quality.

tt_dev··on SQL performance improvements: finding the right queries to fix
What Ive been really looking for is a way to run SQL queries against MySQL 8.0 Inno DB without them hitting the cache.

Its tricky to validate improvements real time but I guess validating in prod is good too

tt_dev··on China bans one-pedal driving in default modes by 2027
Seems reasonable, standardize on operability. It will be quite a shift in driving behavior for the vehicle the come to a complete halt during deceleration

tt_dev··on Air France denied my delay compensation, so I challenged them and won
Similar experience with TAP. Delayed bags by 1 week out of LHR. - Submitted 10 support tickets. - Created a well crafted PDF with meticulous detail of receipts, ticket numbers, costs, justification for costs and problems encountered with the websites. - Found 4 emails for them and sent an email every other day using a script

Got full payment about 6 months later.

To be fair they got hacked that year so had some bigger issues.

But it seems that the attachments and media uploads on websites is a common bug/tactic.

Replace the word "Israeli" with "Russian" and its the reality of western consensus.
