tshannon··on Rivian CEO: 'blows my mind' to see US auto makers shifting back to ICE vehicles
I live in MN and have a Lightning. The range does drop significantly in the winter compared to the summer, however no other vehicle I've ever owned has been able to pre-heat my cabin in my garage every morning before my commute to work, and I'm not driving 500 miles to work so it seems like a worthwhile trade off to me.
tshannon··on Open models by OpenAI
So probably another stupid question, but how do you know what it's spitting out is accurate?
tshannon··on Show HN: Kan.bn – An open-source alterative to Trello
Planka is awesome, too bad it's no longer Open Source.
tshannon··on Dual antibacterial properties of copper-coated nanotextured stainless steel
Exactly. As inflation goes up and wages remain stagnant, more and more people are doing the risk calculus that makes stealing and crime in general worthwhile.

People with good paying jobs that don't wear them down the bone don't steal things, but when you're looking at spending 90% of your pay on a shared living space, and no money left for food, or emergencies, then stealing copper, or catalytic converters all of a sudden starts looking like a valid option.

tshannon··on Vaccine strategy that is effective against any strain of a virus in mice
Still not seeing that claim, I'm still reading though, but so far it seems to actually claim the opposite. Some of the failings of MRNAI is that it's temporary.
tshannon··on Vaccine strategy that is effective against any strain of a virus in mice
Is there a reference for this claim? "Only downside is that RNAi (and mRNA) are uncorrectable once introduced."
tshannon··on The greenest car in America isn't an EV
Isn't the real goal negative emissions? We're well past safe levels of CO2 in the atmosphere.
tshannon··on Google podcasts is shutting down
Unrelated, but does anyone have any good options for listening to a podcast with someone simultaneously? I know in spotify you can do shared listening sessions, but that requires a spotify premium subscription.

Any good self hosted podcast streaming options, or other options that allow shared listening?

tshannon··on Godot Project Organization Introduction for Unity Refugees
Godot has some pretty good navigation, and it was recently re-written in GD 4.1: https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/tutorials/navigation/...

As for Android, I know they are still tackling C# support on Android exports, but other than that I'm not personally aware of it not being good for mobile.

tshannon··on The unreasonable effectiveness of just showing up everyday
This is one of the reasons why investing in learning a terminal "IDE" / editor like vim / emacs can pay off. You can ssh from anywhere and have your development environment waiting for you.
tshannon··on Show HN: Three Names in a Hat – A small Coronavirus quarantine side project
I never know if it's better to link to the webpage or the repository.

tshannon··on JWT is Awesome
It was obviously about the James Webb Telescope.
tshannon··on Hard Drive Stats for 2019
Yeah I use B2 with rclone (https://rclone.org/) and it works great.
tshannon··on Vermont’s DMV has been selling personal data to private companies since 2004
Most of them do, I believe.

I know MN and WI do.

tshannon··on How much are your US insurance premiums for self-employed people?
It's kind of blowing my mind how different the prices are state to state. $900 for a family plan in New York? I pay $1600 in MN for my family plan in MN.
tshannon··on Tesla's Cybertruck Approach on Auto Manufacturing and Engineering
I can't speak towards repairablity and legality, but I know cars are safer now than they used to be back when they were made of steel, because they crumple which absorbs the impact of crashes. Rigid steel transfers the impact to it's occupants.

I'm eager to see how this thing performs in crash tests.

tshannon··on The SpaceX Starship is a big deal
Modern satellites (included Starlink) are much better at this than they used to be. However it'd be nice if there was some treaty, agreement, or body that defines and maybe enforces proper retiring of satellites and management of space debris.
tshannon··on Army looks for alternatives to GPS as enemies threaten to jam signals
Yeah I always wondered if you could ever get accurate enough measurements from cameras and position of stars at night or sun during the day with an accurate clock.
tshannon··on Vue.js v3 released (pre alpha)
Agreed. I'm in the middle of moving our code base over to the plugin above. I figured the Typescript + Decorators Component API was a dead end, so it'd be easier to transition from the plugin to Vue 3 when it eventually came out.

It's been a breath of fresh air when working with typescript.

tshannon··on The Impossible Burger and Beyond Meat aren't healthier
Yeah "Better for people" could mean that it's better for people's environment due to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
tshannon··on The Spaceline: a space elevator alternative achievable with current technology

tshannon··on Go Module Mirror and Checksum Database Launched
I thought vendoring was being deprecated in favor of modules. Maybe I misunderstood though.
tshannon··on Burnout – All-in-one workspace for startups
Half the comments think this is satire and the other half think it's serious. I honestly can't tell if it's naive marketing or tongue-in-cheek satire that's taking itself too seriously.
tshannon··on A material way to make Mars habitable
> ... whatever we use for one thing we stop using for another.

I completely disagree with you here. Neither economies or governments (or "the public mind") are so completely focused and one dimensional as to only direct resources towards one endeavor.

The Apollo program didn't prevent the Soviets from drilling the borehole in the early 70's or Jacque Cousteau from exploring the oceans in the 60's.

tshannon··on A material way to make Mars habitable
While I agree with you for the most part, the technology developed to dig down and live underground would mostly only be applicable to digging down further.

The frontier is in space, and every technological step we take towards that frontier is a step we can use to keep moving outwards.

That being said there's no reason both can't be attempted. One does not preclude the other.

tshannon··on A Giant Asteroid of Gold Won’t Make Us Richer
The sand comment had me perplexed, until I did some googling:

tshannon··on Vue RFC: Expose logic-related component options via function-based APIs instead
I don't get all the negativity. From a typescript perspective, this looks like a breath of fresh air compared to the component based API.
tshannon··on Our Fate Is in the Stars
> "NASA commissioned two studies, with the twist that each team had to flesh out the other’s plan. Making the engineers step into each other’s shoes unstuck the debate, and Huntsville came around to Houston’s approach. That one decision ended up saving billions of dollars."

I love this. I find that so many people get emotionally attached to a decision, simply because it was theirs or their teams.

tshannon··on Indonesia Plans to Move Its Capital Out of Jakarta, a City That's Sinking
> Jakarta's problems are largely man-made – the area's large population has extracted so much groundwater that it has impacted the ground levels, and many surface water resources are polluted.
