tschiller··on Show HN: Generate guitar tablature using a constraint solver
You can also formulate the problem as a dynamic programming problem.

Here's a Java repo I made back in college solving the simpler problem: given a tab, what's the easiest fingering to play it? https://github.com/twschiller/optimal-guitar.

It works by modeling the (1) the difficulty of hand positions, and (2) transitions

I was a PhD student in the group that makes on the Checker Framework.

It's actually pretty easy to use it to automatically enforce Hungarian notation. I have a blog post/sample implementation here: https://toddschiller.com/java-hungarian-notation-checker.htm...

tschiller··on Show HN: Automatic Interview Generator
Creator here. I just released a tool to design a culture fit / behavioral interview in a snap. Just select the core values and competencies you want to focus on, and the application suggests an optimal set of questions.

Some questions read on multiple values/competencies, so it prioritizes these questions to get better coverage.

The questions were hand tagged. Over time, we’re using data collected from our application platform to learn question efficacy.

If there’s enough interest, I’ll add the ability to search, submit, tag, and rate questions to this tool.

If you like what you see, you can also sign up for a free account on our main service which supports optimization across multiple interviewers, interview scorecards, and result summaries

tschiller··on Wikileaks: Julian Assange's internet access 'cut'
Assange has been scheduled to be interrogated by Sweden today (October 17th) since at least mid-September [1]. Both the internet outage and the pre-commitments are likely related to that. For more analysis (and the evaluate the evidence yourself), follow along at https://www.opensynthesis.org/boards/14/who-cut-wikileaks-fo...

Yep, that's the plan! Any methodologies in particular you suggest? ACH seemed like a good choice to start out with because it's relatively simple and well-known

It will be interesting to see which techniques from intelligence analysis and business best lend themselves to collaborative analysis on the internet.

tschiller··on Ask HN: Who needs contributors? (October 2016)
Thanks for the feedback, I was trying to keep the post short. There's a description of the technique in the GitHub readme and on the front-page of the site.

For reference, the site currently supports the Analysis of Competing Hypotheses (ACH) technique [1]. ACH is a structured way of determining which explanation/hypothesis is most consistent with the available evidence.

Open Synthesis (https://www.opensynthesis.org)

Open Synthesis is an open platform for CIA-style analysis of current events. Our mission is to help the public synthesize the flood of information from the media into actionable conclusions. Examples from https://www.opensynthesis.org/boards/:

- What is the relationship between WikiLeaks and Russian intelligence?

- What caused the Space X Falcon 9 explosion?

Now that we have a basic MVP, here's what we want to accomplish this month:

- Improve new user onboarding; reduce the learning curve of the main analysis interface

- Design and implement a moderation system; enable public sign-ups on the site

- Engage an initial set of journalists/analysts to get their feedback on requirements

- Surface information about evidence quality

- Create basic branding materials (e.g., logo)

In addition to these immediate goals, we're looking for designers to help with UI/UX design of the site, especially figuring out how to adapt the analysis tool for mobile.

Skills we need: design, UX, UI, internationalization, community design, community development, moderation, test engineering, Django, Python 3

tschiller··on Implication of sabotage adds intrigue to SpaceX investigation
For those of you wanting to analyze the current evidence yourself, we've got an analysis board up at: https://www.opensynthesis.org/boards/6/what-caused-the-space.... Sabotage by a non-employee is currently the most consistent explanation

Open Synthesis is currently invite-only while we figure out moderation. Send me an email or apply via the form on the homepage.

There's also an instance you can add/edit information to without an invite or providing your email: https://open-synthesis-sandbox.herokuapp.com/boards/6/what-c...

tschiller··on Show HN: Open Synthesis – open platform for CIA-style analysis of current events
Thanks for your interest! Adapting the technique for the internet is one of the main challenges the project is trying to address. That's the reason the main site is invite-only right now.

Here are some thoughts on the points you bring up:

- You can currently dig into the evidence quality by looking at the corroborating/conflicting sources that users have added. Users can also tag sources based on their quality, e.g., state-sponsored media, secondhand information, etc. Eventually I want to arrive at some metrics for evidence/source quality.

- The degree to which the evidence agrees with the hypotheses is handled by the evaluation/assessment process. The site merges the evaluation/assessments from all the participants and highlights areas of dispute. In the future, we'll probably end up allowing users to mark which evaluators they trust (e.g., verified journalists).

- As far as trolls go, we're exploring the space of moderation and anti-troll measures. This will include automated measures like rate limiting, as well as moderation features like flagging evidence/hypotheses as irrelevant, duplicate, etc.

A lot of potential ideas are captured on the issue tracker: https://github.com/twschiller/open-synthesis/issues

tschiller··on Show HN: Open Synthesis – open platform for CIA-style analysis of current events
Author here, I started the project to help people deal with that information overload that modern media has brought with it.

The platform currently supports the Analysis of Competing Hypotheses (ACH) technique [1]. Eventually, after we figure out ACH, I hope to roll out additional collaborative analysis techniques developed in the intelligence and business communities.

The submitted link is for a playground instance that has no editing restrictions and that doesn't require an email address to register. Please play nice! The official site is at https://www.opensynthesis.org. You can request an invite for the official site via Google Forms at https://goo.gl/forms/P6Lgx3nqAhD4zQ8v1. We’ll be opening the site up once we get a better handle on moderation features.

The project is open source (GPLv3): https://github.com/twschiller/open-synthesis. It’s built with Python 3 + Django. You can deploy a private instance to try via the Heroku Button.

The platform is very young and is rough around the edges. There's still a lot of interesting challenges to solve, especially with respect to user experience and community design. For example: what's the best commenting system? What's the best approach to moderation for politically-sensitive topics?

Want to help? I'm looking for contributors to help out with everything from design (we need a logo!) to devops and community building. Check out the 'Help Wanted' label on the issue tracker for concrete ideas of how to contribute. Alternatively, shoot me an email (email is in my profile).

tschiller··on Ask HN: Who needs contributors?
OpenSynthesis, an open platform for intelligence analysis. Our goal is to help the public synthesize vast amounts of information into actionable conclusions.

Our first initiative is adapting the CIA's Analysis of Competing Hypotheses (ACH) [2] technique to work at internet-scale.

At this early stage, we're especially looking for contributions in the following areas:

  - UI/UX design
  - Online community design
  - Front-end development
  - DevOps
  - Alpha testers
We have a 'Help Wanted' issue tag for good starter projects [3].

The code is GPLv3. The current stack is Django, Python 3.5, and Bootstrap.

tschiller··on The MBA Guide to Software Development
Thanks for the observations.

Other people have made the same observation about the signs of the dysfunctional process table. When I wrote it, I was including stakeholders and managers as part of "team". So the scenario you describe would be the business side of the team not managing the scope properly. I'll need to update the table to be clearer.

I agree that people don't change quickly. In those cases, you need to adapt the process to guardrail them (e.g., add a check in the workflow) or put a different person in that role. If you don't, you're just going to get the same result again in the future.

For your edit -- is that a bad thing? Presumably a architect should be able to explain their decisions. The major theme of the guide is that communication is a good thing, especially when the different people are likely working with different information and expertise.

tschiller··on The MBA Guide to Software Development
You're correct that a class on software project management would go deeper into some of the topics.

This article is more aimed at getting a baseline conceptual understanding so that you can figure out where and when to dig deeper.
