tschellenbach··on The Junior Hiring Crisis
Tend to agree here. The slowdown here has more to do with the financial ecosystem. IE less capital available for some companies, higher salaries and a changed approach to work.

The AI wave didn't start yet. Will hit in 26/27

tschellenbach··on Netherlands – Capital Growth Tax and Capital Gains Tax for Box 3
The title here mostly doesn't match the article right? Quote: "But unlike the capital growth tax, capital gains tax will, in principle, only be levied at the time of realisation. This is usually when the relevant asset is sold, but also when immovable property exits Box 3 for another reason, such as emigration."
tschellenbach··on Roblox is a problem but it's a symptom of something worse
Feels like this should be solved at the iOS/Android/Windows/Sony level. Parents should configure settings in 1 place. Not once for each game.
tschellenbach··on Meta Segment Anything Model 3
same here, didn't get approval
tschellenbach··on Claude Opus 4.5
Ok, but can it play Factorio?
tschellenbach··on Go's Sweet 16
10 week onboarding program we use here for go backend devs: https://www.reddit.com/r/golang/comments/1eiea6q/10_week_pla...

go is amazing. switches from python to go 7 years ago. It's the reason our startup did well

tschellenbach··on SIMA 2: An agent that plays, reasons, and learns with you in virtual 3D worlds
It's like the factorio moment where you unlock the roboport. No more manual changes to the world, drone swarms to build housing, roads, bridges, parks etc. so exciting.
tschellenbach··on Europe converged rapidly on the United States before stagnating
I'm Dutch, the media narrative is a major problem. It's not being honest about the level of relative decline between USA & NL. 20 years of diverging growth rates has had a massive impact. This trend will continue, since NL missed most of the internet, mobile, social and AI startups.

Here in Colorado even people at entry level jobs can afford a nice home. Salaries are way lower in NL, and housing is incredibly expensive.

But the media just doesn't report on it. You don't notice it unless you live in both places. Still a beautiful country though and USA has it's own problems as well.

tschellenbach··on Omnilingual ASR: Advancing automatic speech recognition for 1600 languages
any insights on latency?
tschellenbach··on Always be ready to leave (even if you never do)
Yes it's crazy.

There's the founders podcast about Elon Musk. Apparently he stayed in good contact with the Paypal people, even though they fired him and later on that relationship saved Spacex.

tschellenbach··on Ticker: Don't die of heart disease
You can run a full blood panel on your whoop by clicking a button and showing up at a quest diagnostics
tschellenbach··on Why we migrated from Python to Node.js
It is true that Python's typing and async support feels like someone adding extension to a house that was built 50 years ago.
tschellenbach··on Vision Agents 0.1
Open source (any model, any video edge) vision agent library. First 0.1 release.
tschellenbach··on How to be a leader when the vibes are off
The other part of this is the AI wave. Every SAAS company in the world is vulnerable to someone with higher AI driven pace, or better AI features to overtake them.

Even Google is an example, it seemed like the most defensible business. They could coast for years, but now they are literally at risk of losing vs openAI.

tschellenbach··on How to be a leader when the vibes are off
There are literally subreddits about how to abuse the trust of remote work, but there have always been people doing that. I think the main thing that changed is that amazing revenue multiples that made it possible for companies to ignore these issues are no longer there. Meanwhile the costs of everything, including salaries has skyrocketed. So I think it's lower valuations + higher costs -> more pressure on efficiency. Companies that don't become efficient have their valuation collapse or go under.
tschellenbach··on Getting AI to work in complex codebases
I wrote this blogpost on the same topic: https://getstream.io/blog/cursor-ai-large-projects/

It's super effective with the right guardrails and docs. It also works better on languages like Go instead of Python.

tschellenbach··on Slack has raised our charges by $195k per year
we power chat for over 1b users. you are very likely using our chat (strava, nextdoor, match, adobe, patreon, and many others)

closed source but you can export your data when you want to. mattermost is an open source slack. we are more of an API/SDK to build your own in-app chat/messaging as you want it.

tschellenbach··on Slack has raised our charges by $195k per year
Happy to help, did you consider https://getstream.io/chat/ ?

You can integrate it into your app at far lower costs. Actually for what you're doing we're happy to sponsor the hosting at no costs.

tschellenbach··on Slack has raised our charges by $195k per year
Consider building your own (many large communities do). https://getstream.io/chat/

It's super simple to build with Stream and far lower costs than Slack. (i'm the CEO, founder so don't take my word for it). But we have quite a few customers building either communities into their app or large companies running integrated chat workflows. (think airline operations, construction collaboration etc.)

tschellenbach··on Addendum to GPT-5 system card: GPT-5-Codex
is it already supported in cursor? don't see it just yet
tschellenbach··on Campfire: Web-Based Chat Application
Crazy how early they were with this, how talented the tech team, and how poorly it did. Would love to read a post mortem on what went wrong.
tschellenbach··on Python has had async for 10 years – why isn't it more popular?
Yes, this!. Its a mess, some typing, some async. No standardization/ one way to do things. Literally goes against the original ZEN of python

"There should be one-- and preferably only one --obvious way to do it : Aim for a single, clear solution to a problem. "

tschellenbach··on An LLM is a lossy encyclopedia
I feel like thats also true for my brain :)
tschellenbach··on GPT-realtime and Realtime API updates
lower cost, higher quality, loving it so far. question. we run this voice proxy, but here the calls are started on our end typically: https://getstream.io/video/voice-agents/

with sip this logic changes. https://platform.openai.com/docs/guides/realtime-sip

sounds like we can listen to the webhook and start from there?

tschellenbach··on The first Media over QUIC CDN: Cloudflare
hi, I work on our webrtc streaming over at getstream.io

webrtc has a lot of annoying setup. but after it connects it offers low latency. how do you feel MoQ compares after the connection setup is completed? any advantages/ any issues?

tschellenbach··on Go is still not good
I both agree with these points, and also think it absolutely doesn't matter. Go is the best language if you need to ship quickly and have solid performance. Also Go + AI works amazingly well. So in some ways you can actually move faster compared to languages like Node and Python these days.
tschellenbach··on What is going on right now?
AI is currently a very effective army of junior/senior engineers. It requires the oversight of a staff level engineer with some product understanding. When properly applied it can speed up development pace ~100-200x. Things that help achieve this outcome: staff engineer reviewing, typed language (it is so much better at Go compared to Python for instance), well structured project/code, solid testing best practices.

It sounds like the author's company doesn't have this setup well.

If you use AI wrong you get AI slop :)

tschellenbach··on Vibe coding tips and tricks
here's what i use for large projects https://getstream.io/blog/cursor-ai-large-projects/
tschellenbach··on Parsing Protobuf like never before
last time i benchmarked msgpack and protobuf against each other it was near flat for my use case. JSON was 2-3x slower, but msgpack and protobuf were near equal. might be different now after this release, exciting :)
tschellenbach··on Employee – CEO pay gap historically wide
AI is giving people endless freedom to start their own companies if they feel their skills are undervalued elsewhere. Very positive change for the world I think.
