tsar_nikolai··on Don’t be spooky
> The way I see it, if "let's talk when you get a minute" comes across as spooky that means you already have a communication breakdown and mistrust has already blossomed.

I think this might not necessarily be the case. Judging from the frequency the topic is brought up here on HN, a lot of highly skilled, well-performing people suffer from impostor syndrome or other forms of anxiety in the workplace. A ‘spooky’ message then easily leads to reinforcement of their (skewed) negative self-image, without it having anything to do with distrust in either direction.

P.S. I do completely agree with both the scenario and conclusion you illustrate in the rest of your comment and think my supplement of the premise in your first sentence in no way changes the validity of said scenario and conclusion.

tsar_nikolai··on Avoid all links to kicad-pcb.org – Use kicad.org
Searching for "kicad", "kicad pcb" or "kicad-pcb" on DDG, Google, Bing and Brave, only Brave still shows a link to kicad-pcb.org on the first page, so the campaign seems to be going in the right direction

I like the text editor but I love the serendipitous social experiment going on in chat room 2.
tsar_nikolai··on Checkbox
This is an explanation of the april 1st XKCD comic checkbox [0], in which you can send an receive messages in morse code via a checkbox. There are many responses and gems hidden inside. For a cheat sheet of what you can do see here: [1]

tsar_nikolai··on Outrun: Execute local command using processing power of another Linux machine
You need to install outrun on the remote machine but you don't need to install the target command on the remote machine.
tsar_nikolai··on A lost tourist who thought Maine was San Francisco
This reads word for word like the plot of an episode of the Simpsons.

Homer the blissfully ignorant brewery worker takes the trip of his life but ends up at the wrong side of the continent from his intended destination where he becomes a local celebrity and gets coersed into all kinds of harmless adventures, like kissing the local seal. As his boss wants capitalize on his fame without giving him a raise, he retaliates by advertising their competitor on national television. He ends up back home, without a job, and with a recurring tax bill for a piece of land he has no intention of ever using. Nonetheless happier than ever.

I love how life is often stranger than fiction.

tsar_nikolai··on System separation in the Continental Europe Synchronous Area on 8 January 2021
> I wonder what are the benefits of keeping the grid synchronous?

> Wide area synchronous networks improve reliability and permit the pooling of resources. Also, they can level out the load, which reduces the required generating capacity, allow more environmentally-friendly power to be employed; and allow more diverse power generation schemes and permit economies of scale. tsar_nikolai··on KFConsole – Intel NUC 9 enclosure with built in heater for chicken wings
Okay I looked into it and apparently it is not entirely hot air.

KFC has a deditcated 'KFC gaming' account that tweets memes that appeal to gamers [0]. It jokingly tweeted a video featuring a rendering of this console back in June as a joke to play on the new gen console wars [1]. Apparently the reception was so good that it found a wing man in Cooler Master. This case modder / engineer in particular [2] spent a couple of months designing and fitting working hardware plus a chicken drawer into a hot new case design as close to the original tweet as possible.

As the result turned out to a not entirely half baked pc build, KFC has stated that it plans on release the console. We'll have to see wether that will turn out true or not, but as the harware probably consists of of-the-shelf components I have no doubts that there will be at least a couple be built.

tsar_nikolai··on Dutch brewery burns iron as a clean, recyclable fuel
> On a side note, what's the point of a brewery (single business) using it? Do they have some unique energy requirements?

It's a collaboration with a local university to test the technique on industrial scale. According to the researchers there the goal is to grow to grid-scale and convert coal-fired power plans in the coming decade.

tsar_nikolai··on Facebook says breaking off WhatsApp and Instagram would cost billions of dollars
It's probably not surprising that it happens. But still, Facebook has promised not combining any Whatsapp userdata and respecting users' privacy when they were taken over[0], and Facebook getting a €110.000.000 fine from the EU for breaking that promise three years ago [1].

tsar_nikolai··on Helping members who haven’t been watching cancel
To me this seems like a cool ethical decision, but why would they do this? It would seem that people who don't use resources but still monthly donate money are ideal customers (from a financial standpoint)?
tsar_nikolai··on Vercel, formerly Zeit, raises $21M Series A
I absolutely love the company and am a happy customer, but for the love of time, why give up such a good pun for a name?

(For people not familiar with the german language, zeit means time. And 'time now' is simply an amazing name for a product that enables you to ship, well, now)

tsar_nikolai··on Help me ask why you didn't just
You see someone struggling while trying to solve a problem, and you know that –in your opinion– there's an obvious solution to that problem called [𝓍]. The thing you're after, is whether they have considered using this solution.

Just ask them:

=> "Have you considered using [𝓍]?"

Either you will learn something new (why [𝓍] is not suitable for this situation), or they will (there is [𝓍] that solves their problem).

tsar_nikolai··on Avoid 100vh on Mobile Web
You can fall back to the oldskool way of setting the height of the parent nodes to 100%:

  html, body, .full-height {
    height:100%
  }
I guess this is exactly the thing the viewport units were designed to overcome, but at least it's a pure css solution.

tsar_nikolai··on Golden Ratio
I love this because it is both bullshit and awesome. Like many things thats either a rule-of-thumb or subjective, it has been studied thoroughly, confirmed, debunked, and applied succesfully many times.
tsar_nikolai··on Something for Nothing (1940) [video]
Featuring Rube Goldberg machines and quite a nice demonstration of a gasoline engine.

It's funny how the various statements in this videos (about patents, perpetual motion devices and gasoline) have each aged in their own way.

tsar_nikolai··on Ask HN: The most useful Mac keyboard shortcuts?

tsar_nikolai··on Ask HN: How do you retain motivation/knowledge over different projects/fields?
Only just finished reading trough the full talk.

This slide[0] really resonated with me.

The new thing won’t be better, you just aren’t aware of all of the ways it will be terrible yet.

tsar_nikolai··on Ask HN: How do you retain motivation/knowledge over different projects/fields?
That's a very good approach to choosing which technologies to use. For personal just-for-fun projects it's often nice to either work with new technologies or (re)invent the wheel, but this is a very nice approach how to pick tech for contract work.

Nice.

tsar_nikolai··on Adding 1B hectares of forest could help check global warming
Interesting! What's interesting to me as well, is that despite their criticism, both scientists do seem to support the opinion that it is an extremely important measure to add to our portfolio of climate measures.
