trzeci··on V8 Release v9.6
This is something that I'm worry about: It forces Emscripten builds to be created differently in the way the build artifacts will be compatible only with that version of V8 - in practice it means a dead feature that looks nice, but we can't use for a long long time.
trzeci··on Prefer the British Style of Quotation Mark Punctuation over the American
You're right. I used to programming quotes so much that every variation from it makes a pain. Especially mentioned below the automatic quote replacement by some text editor. Which does not make sense for me, when I paste a code snippet.

Another pain is when I see such code snippets on the web.

For the clarity, it's not only the US quotes I have a problem with. Other languages have also their corks:

- PL: „quote”

- PL: ‚quote’ (single variant)

- PL: ‘quote’ (british variant)

- FR: «quote»

- DE: »quote«

trzeci··on Xiaomi Unveils Xiaomi Smart Glasses
With that I thought there are lenses between eyes and screen that make it possible. With smart glasses I couldn't see any opportunity to alter the visual rays.

// Thanks for other comments how it could be possible!

trzeci··on Prefer the British Style of Quotation Mark Punctuation over the American
Which makes no sense IMHO is to use “” instead of "". But it could be my OCD also.

When I test my minimal focus distance it's around 10cm (4"). What's the tech behind it, to display anything that can be sharp in such a small distance?
trzeci··on Mozilla has defeated Microsoft’s default browser protections in Windows
+1 on that: It's still manageable to set a default browser which is not Ms Edge, but I found especially dark pattern - that Windows apps do not respect that setting. Take a look on the news feed in the recent Windows 10 release. When you click on a link, it opens Ms Edge regardless what you have set as default browser. I think I've seen also some user guides / support pages opening also in Ms Edge that way. Frankly speaking, even if I found some news feeds interesting, the fact it will be opened in MS Edge made me to disable the feed at all.
trzeci··on Unity patents ECS
The patent went through as it was described in the context of device - where a device is a core element of the application.

Terrifying that went through.

trzeci··on Firefox 92
I'm surprised that Firefox has recently slowed down on the WebAssemply implementation. Especially thinking about the tools for developers to support WASM debugging with DWARF.

Unfortunately the only one solution is to use Chromium based browsers and install a plugin, that itself has some limitations (like dwarf file cannot be larger thatn 2GiB).

Sorry for a sad note in front, I'm happy because of the release!

trzeci··on Todo-or-die – Provides procedural macros that act as checked reminders
Great solution to spend some weekend or holidays to fix a compilation issues on pipeline. Frequently on downstream projects that use shared code.
trzeci··on What Is the “Bus Factor” of Your Project?
Our team is currently trying to figure out how to work with the bus factor - but that measurement is just one side point of view - good for prevention to lose an important team mates, and helps with planing handover for sure.

We've found another metric (unnamed) what's the person coverage of code (or projects). As we're working in a long living project, we've found that for some code we have there is no single person knowing shit about it. Therefore in case of maintenance - there is a risk that it will take longer - or possibly will be impossible. Guess what - in case of code that we use it's fine to live with this. And in any case, somebody will flex a little bit more to change implementation.

There is another case - when internal projects / CI / CD relies on tools that we've lost maintainers. Knowledge how to build them, where to SSH to restart them is gone. Current action is to spot such systems and reduce our dependency on them.

Our team is ~60 devs. I wounder to how it works for other companies that maintain long living projects.

trzeci··on I nearly lost the Lightroom catalog with of all my photos
I found myself, that my enthusiastic approach to photography does not utilize the CC plan on Adobe to pay ~10$/month. What I do is to import images from SD + do a base color correction. What I found unique and useful is face recognition that Lightroom offers. Nonetheless, I decided to move on to either open source software or software that I can buy. At the moment I'm testing On1 - but I wanted to check if somebody from HN has either own solution that wanted to share or something to recommend.

Same here and our games run on every possible device with a screen.
trzeci··on Writing a simple JSON library from scratch: a tour through modern C++
Title: > a tour through modern C++

Then:

```
#ifndef JSON_H
#define JSON_H
// ...
#endif
```

Still I didn't get how #pragma once didn't end up in a standard, when every major compiler supports that.

trzeci··on Conditionally setting your gitconfig
I was using that approach for a while, but the problem is if you're in the folder defined in the includeIf - and you clone new repository from there - it will use your root config, not the additional config. includeIf path matching works only if the folder is already under git.

A solution is to make a dummy repo in the repo where includeIf points to - but that is annoying a little, as sometimes it confuses IDEs or makes shell (ZSH + addons) slower - as it tries to seek for changes.

The best solution I've found is to unconditionally include an additional config in the main config. But the additional config is coming from a dynamic location that I mount in my shell when I work. Basically during the working hour I mount my entire partition which is encrypted under ~/work. And I have my config under ~/work/.gitconfig. I have also there my additional shell config - so during working hours I have everything set up. The cons is that I need to mount/unmount that partition every day.

trzeci··on ECMAScript for XML - Direct XML Syntax in ECMAScript
ActionScript 3.0 was a great example of implementing E4X.

I miss that language a lot. It has quite a few great concepts: XML, intuitive implementation of objects, where key can be anything. Statically typed. Prototypes. Typed vectors. for..each loop. Dictionary with weak keys (oh that I loved so much, it was so powerful to implement better memory management on top of this).

I spent like 10 years developing in it, now it's my 6 year since I've touched it last time : (

trzeci··on Sublime Text 4
I didn't know about UltraEdit - just tested on my files that I work with: 50MiB of ASM.js code in ~20 lines.

UltraEdit is very sluggish - to the moment it's not usable to work with.

I did a very subjective comparison between few editors in terms of speed in working with such file (flow is: open, find, manually edit, save). And in my eyes here is the result: 1. Cuda Text 2. Sublime 4 3. VS Code 6. UltraEdit

Please note: I only tested the workflow that I work on daily basis. I can see that UltraEdit can do much more that Cuda Text, and in different test cases probably it will be a much better choice. But not for me.

trzeci··on Sublime Text 4
Hi! I'm struggling with the same problems (Debugging huge ASM.js files). The best modern, non-vim editor to handle such files I've found is Cuda Text: http://uvviewsoft.com/cudatext/

Absolutely top tier lightweight code editor for special tasks.

trzeci··on Microsoft joins Bytecode Alliance to advance WebAssembly
At some moment I thought that Oracle will try to embrace WASM, try to influence design to bring Java to the web again without any NPAPI needed. But looks like they missed the train, and an alliance is created without them.
trzeci··on Kalman Filter in Python
Hi! Don't be shy. I found Kalman filter very very undervalued in usage, and it's one of the best way to greatly filter out stream of data.

Have you seen some VR / AR applications that apply some visual effects on human faces? Or something that visualizes hand position in space - based on some controllers? Have you seen these visualizations having a spontaneous jumps in position of theirs visualization? These are areas where Kalman filtration can be applied.

Good work!

trzeci··on Bitwarden Send - A trusted way to securely share information with anyone
Oh! Right! I think this is a ripple effect of #1 for me, this is how I see the panel for creation a message: https://i.imgur.com/IBVinx4.png

So Firefox put my account password there automatically, and color coded that, but also did this for Max Access Count. And to be frank I filtered out that field when I was looking for relative option to solve #2 problem.

trzeci··on Bitwarden Send - A trusted way to securely share information with anyone
Two feedback points:

* Password field for creating new sends should be named differently, as by default Firefox autocompletion puts there my account's password there. Potentially should be exposed from OPTIONS panel. Alternatively it can be generated by default, and then once the message is created, will be shared to the creator - or stored in options menu of my sends

* Missing an option to expire message after first opening. It's like a self destroyable notification that can be read only once. Why? For the instance if I share some confident information with someone that I know is going to open very soon, then once he/she opens the message it will be destroyed, so that if somebody accesses either my or my friend's machine, it will be impossible to read the secret message. Another aspect is that if my friend will try open the secret message, and it will show that message doesn't exist / was destoryed - then we know that message was compromised.

trzeci··on CD Projekt Red has been subject to a cyber attack and ransom demand
This can be verified with local copies from developers - history in SCM in unmodifiable - and if it is - it's easy to spot due to different SHAs
trzeci··on CD Projekt Red is under investigation
Oh I didn't know about Morgan Stanley - that's interesting.
trzeci··on CD Projekt Red is under investigation
If UOKiK got some reports from customers that something is potentially working against customers, then an investigation is started. This is not an exceptional case of CDPR that's under radar. It happens tons of times: Misleading labels, incorrect ingredients on some food, something is overpriced etc. And this is wonderful, as it is one of organization that can actually force a positive change.

But, 10% is a maximum penalty posted. For the instance [1] shows that in 2018 maximum penalty was 931k PLN (~300k $). Another case [2] shows that penalty can be easily deceased if subject is cooperating (-50%) and further more decreased if subject takes penalty without court.

At the moment CDPR has done something extraordinary that is: extended refund policy for the title. Forcing that also on PlayStation (and taking ricochet by pulling title from the store). Providing a few hot fixes for very very fresh product and stating future work in next couple of months.

I do understand that players on base PS4 and XBOX are mad. And in my opinion UOKiK can help taking their side. But with such a complicated case, where lots of players do play and enjoy the game (even on these consoles). The 10% penalty is simply impossible. Also I don't know if it's is at all, as there is the refund policy in place.

[1] - https://www.uokik.gov.pl/download.php?plik=24030

[2] - https://www.wiadomoscihandlowe.pl/artykul/uokik-pol-miliona-...

TL;DR; UOKiK does that as requested and expected from them, but is very unlikely that 10% penalty will take place.

trzeci··on Microsoft may be developing its own, in-house ARM CPU designs
We've just started to clean the mess with browsers, where every browser made a custom custom extensions / API, and now we're entering a situation where every major player will create own CPU with special instructions, and that will cascade to compilers and ultimately to developers trying to provide cross platform apps.
