trympet··on Ask HN: It's 2023, how do you choose between MySQL and Postgres?
The Postgres query optimizer is more powerful than the MySQL query optimizers [1]. It generally scales better for OLTP. Also tons of extensions that can accelerate your workload.

trympet··on Windows 11: TPMs and Digital Sovereignty
This is false. Here are technical docs on how the TPM is used: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/informati...
trympet··on AMD promises its new laptop chips will crush the Apple M2 and it’s got receipts
Is that directly relevant to the consumer? The M1 architecture seems to be fairly sustainable. Intel, not so much.
trympet··on Microsoft exec says Windows 11 kernel will soon be booting with Rust inside
YMMV, but I found the macOS app store way more picky than the MS Store. Denying my submission for using the term 'Exit' instead of 'Quit' rubs me the wrong way.

No clue, however, they've made it relatively seamless to publish and download from there. You can also use winget [1] to download signed apps from the store. End users don't need an MSA.

They do most of this -- albeit without support -- through the store if that's a viable distribution channel for you. You can actually get support, but be prepared to pay big $$$.
trympet··on OpenAI tech gives Microsoft's Bing a boost in search battle with Google
This has been a major pain point for me as well, especially related to developer documentation. Recently switched to Bing, and it seems to be handling my queries better.

> lock down of PC software to the Microsoft app store, probably roughly at the same time apple also tightens a lock down on macOS

Nothing is locked down. UWP and win32 are funcionally equivalent with sparse registration. If you decide to publish to the store anyways, you can even use your own payment provider and keep 100% comission.

> more anti competitive steps to make installing desktop Linux on consumer hardware hard while arguing you could just use WSL and it's "for your security" and they are not anti Linux because they embrace Linux on servers

Isn't WSL a win-win for the Linux-community and Windows-users alike? WSL2 and WSLg make Linux desktop apps more accessible than ever.

> trying to kill Valve, there should only be Windows games and only through the Windows app store Xbox Game Studios games are released on Steam.

I could go on, but you get the point.

According to MSFT [1], its a "multiyear, multibillion dollar investment", not an acquisition. Do they have an exclusivity deal?

trympet··on Why modern software is slow
Question: why can you not separate the different graphics tiers as optional addons? That way, I only have to download high resolution textures if my PC can actually handle them.

Edit: never mind. Saw this being discussed elsewhere in this thread.
