trvz··on Building Pi with Pi
The 7 is different though.
trvz··on The memory shortage is causing a repricing of consumer electronics
First, the iPhone 17 Pro is a huge improvement.

Second, the article doesn’t focus on phones we buy. There won’t be a shortage of those.

trvz··on Spotify will start reserving concert tickets for fans
It’s worth 750, which is about ten years worth of yearly subscriptions.

Plex is 16 years old and the Lindy effect applies.

trvz··on Infomaniak transitions to a foundation model to protect user data privacy
I've received an email about this with the subject: "An (important) message from the founder of Infomaniak"

Putting "important" in there, even in parentheses, is highly disrespectful, as it implies the necessity to be read immediately, whereas in reality this doesn't have any impact on customers at all.

Infomaniak overall has a decent product offering, but I've noticed repeatedly incompetence and manipulative behaviour such as this from them and am considering moving away entirely.

If you claim to be ethically superior, I'll hold you to higher standards.

trvz··on Incident Report: Railway Blocked by Google Cloud [resolved]
No, this is the company that failed those guys.

You should also read the story, as you're perpetuating a false version of it: https://x.com/lifeof_jer/status/2048103471019434248

trvz··on Show HN: Files.md – Open-source alternative to Obsidian
To edit Markdown files I want a nice simple native app.

We had those already more than a decade ago. Personally, I fondly remember Mou.

Obsidian has heavy Electron vibes, and Files.md is several steps more into the wrong direction.

The name is also bad. It feels like it was chosen because someone already had the domain.

trvz··on Show HN: Files.md – Open-source alternative to Obsidian
And the developers get compensated for their work how?
trvz··on WHO declares Ebola outbreak a global health emergency
You've replied to the wrong comment.

Anyway: taking time off work when too sick to work != isolating when the symptoms first appear.

trvz··on WHO declares Ebola outbreak a global health emergency
> People with the flu tend to self-isolate showing symptoms.

Do you have any other fantasy tales you’d like to tell?

trvz··on Apple Silicon costs more than OpenRouter
Local LLMs aren’t about cost, but control.
trvz··on OpenAI and Government of Malta partner to roll out ChatGPT Plus to all citizens
Too many people are stupid-stubborn and not even willing to pay 5$ a month for an online service that would help them greatly.

If a government thinks that ChatGPT even in its current form is a big boon, it makes sense to do this.

This is also insurance - your population gains LLM literacy and will have an advantage over other countries; even if it's only a tiny bit, at the level of states it adds up.

trvz··on Kioxia and Dell cram 10 PB into slim 2RU server
It needs to be portable/travel-friendly, something like this: https://global.icydock.com/product_327.html
trvz··on Greek Alphabet Cards
Modern Greek is, frankly, irrelevant.

Ancient Greek is needed to get a full Western education, for reading some of our foundational literature properly.

trvz··on Kioxia and Dell cram 10 PB into slim 2RU server
Not quite yet.

The interesting thing here is ~256TB in a single drive, but it's in E3.L form factor.

I have about 160TB on hard drives that I'm waiting to offload onto a single SSD.

But that needs to come with a connector that has adapters to USB-C, so I can attach it to my Macbook Neo.

Hopefully they get it a bit more dense soon and into the 2.5" NVMe form.

trvz··on Where to buy a non-Apple, non-Google smartphone
> But can I run my apps?

> Well, probably, yes.

Even with "probably" as a qualifier, this is disingenuous.

Not even Android has caught up to the highest tier of apps available on iOS.

trvz··on Feedr v0.8.0 – a TUI RSS reader, now read the full article from your terminal
RSS readers are immensely helpful to also interact with image (such as web comics) and video (Youtube channels) feeds.

Alas, a terminal interface is a decisively bad choice for that.

trvz··on A new book on Steve Jobs at NeXT
I think it was about the back of a cabinet, and that attitude certainly exists in woodworking. It's reasonable for learning to appreciate that as an adolescent to have a big impact on a person.

And even if that book were fully dictated by Steve Jobs, it can still be valuable to know what such a person thinks (or claims to think) about things.

trvz··on MacBook Neo Deep Dive: Benchmarks, Wafer Economics, and the 8GB Gamble
I used a Mac mini M1 with 8GB of RAM for a while. It was fine; much better than Intel Macs or any other setup with low RAM.
trvz··on The Future of Obsidian Plugins
I'd say that may be as harmful as it is helpful. Amateur users may have heard of Github and would therefore trust that domain, but you can upload malware to Github just as easily as anything else.
trvz··on Googlebook
They list Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo on this site.

Any one would be a slightly bad sign for quality, all five are awful.

Yet another product range with lots of options, but not a single good one.

trvz··on Killed by Apple
Size, but not form.

Best form goes to the Neo, current Air, or 2015 MBP.

They should be offering a 12” Air now.

trvz··on Internet Archive Switzerland
Typical for something made in St. Gallen. A sensible web developer from Zurich interested in the topic would have created this website in just a single HTML and an optional CSS file.
trvz··on 245TB Micron 6600 ION Data Center SSD Now Shipping
It's not just a single PCB, but a sandwich of several.
trvz··on Apple Cuts More Mac Studio and Mac Mini RAM Options as Memory Shortage Worsens
No, the memory is different enough.
trvz··on Google Chrome silently installs a 4 GB AI model on your device without consent
It sounds like you’re talking about network usage, but this is about storage.

Also, average doesn’t mean 50% lower and 50% higher.

trvz··on Google Chrome silently installs a 4 GB AI model on your device without consent
Read the article, it's not about that, but a mere 4GB of storage.
trvz··on Sally McKee, who coined the term "the memory wall", has died
No, plural can’t be deduced from how it is written.
trvz··on AI uses less water than the public thinks
This site, if not overly wasteful, fits onto a single 1U server. A single car is more damaging than such a server.
trvz··on The More Young People Use AI, the More They Hate It
Use them for what? This is a case where what you do with your stuff matters more than its size.
trvz··on Granite 4.1: IBM's 8B Model Matching 32B MoE
Yes. Some people are very trigger happy in attributing human slop to LLMs.
