trutannus··on Show HN: I built a simulator for personal finance
This looks useful, but isn't really usable. For example, your investments tiles all call up the same dialog. For example, clicking "Cryptocurrency" calls up the same modal as clicking "Taxable Investments". Because of this, you end up producing nonsense numbers since every modal just modifies the same field.

If this is not a bug, then the modal is confusing. The labels inside the modal don't correspond to anything on the dashboard. The investment modal should have a field for each investment, rather than some random fields that don't clearly map. If I click "Cryptocurrency" and a modal with no mention of it shows up, I'll assume the software is broken.

I'd also suggest having less memeish simulation descriptions for younger demographics. It adds friction for the average user when they think "well, I'm none of these things, what do I pick". Might also be taken as condescending. Comparatively, the older demographics all had very simple descriptions which would have mass appeal. Comes off like the developers don't take this demographic seriously, or don't understand how to market to it.

Cool looking dashboard, but crazy amount of UX friction makes it hard to use. I'd love to see it when it's tuned up.

trutannus··on Google Docs will “warn you away from inappropriate words”
"It's an engineering problem"
trutannus··on Google Docs will “warn you away from inappropriate words”
> a concern which is not necessarily distilled down to "big brother" or "corporate overlords".

My first thought was the time that Google banned a genocide researcher and froze their Drive account because it contained images and video of warcrimes for their research. I can only imagine this `feature` going the same way over time. This is going to affect people who are legitimately studying social problems, more than it is likely to help fix the problems they're studying.

For example, the Nuremberg Trial transcript probably contains some pretty choice words. If Google starts suggesting edits, or worse auto-applying them like they do with spelling, we run the risk of whitewashing documents like this unintentionally.

trutannus··on A Census of Minecraft Servers
What's the latency like with that? When a user causes a wake event, how long until the server is live and ready to play? What sort of wait system do you use? This sounds really cool.
trutannus··on A Census of Minecraft Servers
25565 is less common than alternate ports from what I've seen. Most small, individually run, servers are not running 25565.
trutannus··on Sounding the alarm: How noise hurts the heart (2021)
I found Iceland to be very quiet as well. Likely since there's so few people to make noise in the first place.
trutannus··on A naked skydive inspired a way to keep pilots oriented in flight
I think they're two separate ideas maybe. The "per year" in that sentence is ambiguous. It's unclear if it applies to the $300 million, or both that and the 30 lives.
trutannus··on A naked skydive inspired a way to keep pilots oriented in flight
I think the sentence is just poorly worded. I see this "it costs $300 per year" and "30 lives" as two separate ideas. I think we might just be assuming that its also 30 lives per year, when it might just have been $300 million and 30 lives in recent years. I struggled with that sentence too, so I could also be totally wrong.
trutannus··on The weird, wonderful history of fairground photography
Right, but I'm sure there's more out there than just these two. Having a post about photography with minimal photos is somewhat weird.
trutannus··on I wasted $40k on a fantastic startup idea (2020)
You're not wrong at all, but this line at the end really stuck out to me:

> If I’d articulated at the beginning how I expected to extract value from GlacierMD, maybe I would’ve researched the economics of an ad-based model, or I would’ve validated that doctors were willing to pay, or hospitals, or insurance companies.

The impression I got was this failure was induced by a complete lack of planning. It looks like the author had an idea, got some positive feedback, then drove the entire project based on random inputs they got from people. At no point do they talk about sitting down and doing the boring stuff. Like feasibility analysis, market studies, and developing a very, very basic concept of where the money will come from. The fact that the project had to fail before they realized they didn't think of how to monetize it is... baffling. That should be the one of first things you consider when trying to start a business: how will it make money?

trutannus··on Show HN: I'm writing a free book called Computer Networks from Scratch
Might as well set it up early so you don't have organizational debt to make up later on!
trutannus··on GitHub Incident
Its the snow-day of the tech world.
trutannus··on LibreTube: Alternative YouTube front end for Android built with Piped
For some people it is a feature. For you its not. You're one data point. You appear to have the same attitude as the people who leave drive-by feature demands on open source projects, then get hostile when they're ignored. The app isn't for you, and you're not entitled to features in a free, open source project. Its not a "snooty clap back", they're actually correct. This project isn't for you, and writing a manifesto of features they need to implement to add one user is pretty absurd.

Imagine downloading a free textbook and emailing the creator demanding additional content or else you'd stop using their free textbook? This sort of thing just reeks of entitlement and a misunderstanding of open source more than anything else.

trutannus··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
That also causes replies to sections of text taken out of context to get more traction than they should, feeding the "dunk" culture on Twitter. I'm not sure being able to reply to and highlight an out of context chunk of text is a useful thing for communication at all really.
trutannus··on Incident report: Spotify outage on March 8
For sure. The "invalid password reset link" one really caused worry. It took until I hit the support page to figure out there was an account issue. Probably should have issued an email notice so I could have seen it when I tried to reset my password.
trutannus··on Incident report: Spotify outage on March 8
That and the accounts appearing locked, with password reset links not working. For the first few minutes of the outage, I thought I my accounts were what was compromised. Caused genuine concern for a while there since it appeared I had lost control over my Spotify account, and there's credit card data in there.
trutannus··on My lizard brain is no match for infinite scroll
> Any suggestions how to unbreak it?

I wish, but no. My biggest take away from watching economies and governments get borked by people who don't know what they're doing is that anything I could suggest will probably make matters worse. I'm a software developer, not a specialist in societies.

trutannus··on Adding a “duress” password with PAM Duress (2021)
Even blowing away relevant data like file structures, cookies that would prove your innocence would typically be considered spoliation or destruction of evidence. Even if the evidence is "Joe is innocent". So you could end up creating a felony out of a situation where you would have ended with nothing. If you did nothing, don't touch anything.

If you wipe your already clean device, you've now engaged in real criminality, and will end up creating charged out of thin air for yourself.

trutannus··on Adding a “duress” password with PAM Duress (2021)
> but in the background runs scripts to clean up sensitive data, close connections to other networks to limit lateral movement

Oh boy. Don't do this. No matter how much trouble you're in, erasing the proof will make it worse. If you're innocent too, then you're really in a bad situation.

trutannus··on My lizard brain is no match for infinite scroll
>Having to work multiple jobs to keep a roof over your head, massive inflation, burnout from everything, covid spikes recently

So the consequences of inept, corrupt, and broken governmental systems basically.

trutannus··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
For me at least, its not the work tasks itself, its the dealing with the company and the amount of inefficiency that gets in the way of being able to do my tasks. When I do them, I enjoy them. Waiting a week for information and not being allowed to work on other tasks in the mean time will make anyone a little demotivated.
trutannus··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
Elixir probably isn't the bottleneck. The VPS instance itself, and whatever server they're using there, probably bit the dust.
trutannus··on Send your email right to the other person's spam
It's invisible on Gmail at least. When you paste it to non-email situations it's not got the same formatting I assume.
trutannus··on The Dangers of Dimethylmercury (2019)
Worked with a professor who knew this person. He talked about this not infrequently. All the grad students knew of the story as well, and would talk about it. Her death really shook up the NMR community. It was the reason we never use DEM in our lab, and why many try to avoid it at all costs even now. If I remember properly, and this was over 10 years ago, the reason its commonly used is to calibrate the spectrometers, so in some areas it gets hard to avoid.

Also, the article mentions you need nitrile gloves to protect yourself from it. This is not sufficient and is dangerously misinformed. You need silver shield gloves to protect yourself from it.

trutannus··on Fortran is easy to learn
From the article:

> The idea of introductory languages is not necessarily that they are suited to commercial endeavors, but rather that they are (i) easy to implement algorithm in, (ii) readable, and (iii) do not contain things that will confuse and bewilder.

trutannus··on Anarchists making their own medicine (2018)
That and market failure.
trutannus··on Anarchists making their own medicine (2018)
My first thought was how dangerous this is. Then after thinking some more, I was left questioning how a developed country can mess up so badly that some people feel this is their only option.
trutannus··on Jerrycan
I fully expected this to link to a software project of some sort. Apache Jerrycan sounds like a convincing software I would believe existed.

Edit: I was surprised to learn that jerrycan.js does not exist either.

trutannus··on Elizabeth Holmes found guilty
> what kind of sociopath has a baby in the middle of a trial where she could go to jail and not see the kid for years

The same sort who would lie to cancer patients about their blood test results, and very probably lead a few to their deaths along the way? Sounds exactly like the Holmes we've all come to know.

trutannus··on An NFT without a blockchain
Likely FOMO, and being hyped into it by shills.
