trustno2··on AI is the reason interviews are harder now
I'm not a great programmer, but I think I'm quite good, I have contributions in quite a lot of foss projects, I have CS masters, yet I have no idea how would I even start these FAANG problems. In 30 minutes? Who is this optimizing for?

I worked in one "unicorn" once and all I did was getting protobufs from one API, putting it to database and taking it back from database and putting it to different API; it was so boring. I solved my boredom by contributing to some in-house framework, after which I was told I am out of my line and should go back to copying data between APIs.

Are people at Facebook actually solving these hard CS problems in daily life? Why are these interviews even a thing?

trustno2··on Apple apologizes for iPad 'Crush' ad that 'missed the mark'
Yeah they still feature it online and on their official website.

It's just "we take your concerns very seriously" fluff reply.

trustno2··on Signal's Katherine Maher Problem
This article hits all the bingo spots.

> regime change

> colored revolution

> putting disinformation in quote marks

> fascists in scare quotes

yeah OK I think she is fine

trustno2··on Preview Builds of the Zed Editor Now Available for Linux
I have used it only once, when I needed to inspect and lightly edit a giant json (50 GBs or so) and other editors got stuck on it.

It lacks so many features that others have that it makes no sense for me to use it as a daily editor.

trustno2··on Every map of China is wrong
That's just hilarious honestly
trustno2··on ChatGPT provides false information about people, and OpenAI can't correct it
AI pushers are presenting them as factual databases. REpeatedly.
trustno2··on ChatGPT provides false information about people, and OpenAI can't correct it
Nobody put what I think about AI better than this.

Yes, there are good cases where "realistically sounding bullshit" is useful! I remember in the early days, before everyone grew kind of tired (well, at least me) of GPT, people used "hehe write me PC manual in style of slam poetry" or whatever, and that is fun.

However, people use it to get facts!

Just a few days ago, I have read somewhere that hospitals are planning to use LLMs to replace nurses. That is horrifying. Absolutely horrifying.

trustno2··on ChatGPT provides false information about people, and OpenAI can't correct it
OpenAI openly and knowingly, and Microsoft even more, presents ChatGPT as a way to get facts.
trustno2··on Cult of the Dead Cow – Veilid (2023)
The demo VeilidChat app doesn't lead anywhere, but there is a gitlab.

I haven't tried it yet.

edit: I did, I failed to build it with "version solving failed.", I am not learning how to debug Dart builds right now

edit2: well, build.sh finished with some installing, but I still don't see any binary. Eh, other day.

trustno2··on A BSD person tries Alpine Linux
Hah, Alpine Linux is actually not GNU/Linux! I didn't know that.

It's .... Busybox/Linux?

trustno2··on McKinsey Under Criminal Investigation over Opioid-Related Consulting
One think I did appreciate about McKinsey is how they will advise anyone. Left-wing dictators, right-wing dictators, normal governments, big tech small tech, banks, you name it.

There is something freeing with "it's just money"... you don't question their political loyalties or how they are affiliated - they don't care, they just want cash.

Unfortunately actually working with them made me realize they are kind of useless and their main value is that they can produce a lot of powerpoint presentations, and eat an infinite amount of money per slide.

In my opinion/experience they are not evil, they are just useless. But YMMV

trustno2··on Apple Vision Pro Customer Interest Dying Down at Some Retail Stores
I remember the watch being kind of unpopular, and most people didn't really know what is it for and how to use it. Now it is really popular.

Apple TV also really didn't find much of a success, really.

That being said... the watch was not as big of an investment, so they could iterate relatively quickly and make new versions. Apple Vision Pro is really expensive.
