truenamenofame··on People dumped their pets into lakes. Now football-size goldfish are taking over
>Far from being an innocuous domestic animal, a goldfish freed in fresh water is an invasive species, an organism that is introduced to an environment, can quickly reproduce, outcompete native species and destroy a habitat. And even though they get less attention than invasive organisms such as Asian carp or zebra mussels, goldfish appear to be a growing problem in bodies of water across the United States and around the world, triggering warnings from government officials in Virginia, Washington state, Australia, Canada and elsewhere.

>Also known by the scientific name Carassius auratus, goldfish can live to be 25 years old, weigh as much as four pounds and measure well over a foot long. They’re also surprisingly resilient: They can survive in severe conditions and can weather winters in bodies of water that have frozen over, living for months without oxygen. This quality, Bajer said, “makes them really, really tough and allows them to dominate certain types of ecosystems.”

truenamenofame··on You don't need to learn to code, and neither do your kids
As much as I'd prefer to be a baker or tradesman, I know you're not going to pay me anything near what you get for coding. Gonna fake it until I make it, maybe even be a very mediocre or bad coder, but at least you'll pay me better than destroying my body at some trade for slightly above poverty wages.

Fair enough

It's good you wrote this up to bring attention to this, but did you really have to torment the CSR by saying you'd go to social media about it as some kind of bargaining chip? You're right it's not on them, it's on the company. But that CSR is probably going to be thinking about this for the rest of the week, fearing that he'll be out of a job soon for something out of his control and be unable to pay the bills and stuff.

EDIT: I'd be terrified too if some big shot on the phone starts threatening a social media campaign against me, some unfortunate soul forced to work in a call center to deal with people like this

truenamenofame··on Google reports soaring attrition among Black women
But Asians are being systemically held down by affirmative action and racial quotas. Proof that the power of systemic racism is very real no matter your income or class, or no matter if you're a minority or not. You are not safe as long as the cultural zeitgeist has decided so.
truenamenofame··on Americans aren't willing to pay to stop climate change
An expense for businesses and households that can afford it (and they'll surely write it off their taxes), is not equivalent to the impact on poor people who will be put on the street if they aren't already homeless. It's delusional to think that we'll make any impact on climate change by asking the poor and young to sacrifice what little quality of life they have left. In the end, people are going to vote for their best interests. Rich people that benefit from polluting and exploiting the environment and the poor/young have aligned incentives. Any climate change solution that doesn't include lifting up the poor and helping the young and disenfranchised is a waste of time.
truenamenofame··on Americans aren't willing to pay to stop climate change
The young and poor can't afford to increase their cost of living even further. We're already burdened with debt, a shitty job market, unable to afford housing, and are having trouble even finding love and having children. I don't know how much more people expect us to sacrifice. Newsflash, this generation has fucking nothing left to give.
truenamenofame··on Ask HN: Help, my boss wants to us to use laptops from 2011 for development
I really don't believe that is the best alternative. If $1000 is really enough to get enough laptops for whatever number of participants there, then you're better off using half or less of that to upgrade with SSDs and RAM. Elitebooks are HP's business class laptops, so they have great amount of ports and upgradability alongside with being built like tanks. Very repairable as well. What proper laptops do you think you'll be able to get with only $1000? At best they would be chromebooks or flimsy consumer grade laptops. Or did you mean $1000 per laptop for each participant? That seems like a poor use of resources tbh. I don't think there's a need to use that much money on beginners learning to code. Not all of them will even stay and finish the course anyway. In fact, it'd probably be a real nice experience to order the ram and ssds and then instruct them how to upgrade the laptops themselves.

Just my opinion though, it's not up to me so I have no skin in the game so take it for what it is.

truenamenofame··on Canada weather: Dozens dead as heatwave shatters records
I have to deal with this problem living in a room with no AC/central air and I have some tips that may be useful for others in the same situation.

1. Put a frozen water bottle under your shirt. Keep backups in the freezer to cycle from. It seriously feels amazing and sucks the heat out of your body.

2. Use two or more fans, one good one to blow air at yourself and another one that is redirecting hot air away from you (so it's facing somewhere away from you). It's just like how airflow in a computer works I guess lol

3. Have ice always available, drink a ton of ice water and stay hydrated.

The difference between doing these things and not doing these things for me is having a somewhat productive day vs spending the whole day doing nothing.

truenamenofame··on Ask HN: Help, my boss wants to us to use laptops from 2011 for development
I am kind of fascinated how people without computers end up at a coding school. Are they paying to attend?

That said, I have an elitebook 8470p and assuming they have ssds and enough ram, they should be fine considering the situation. If the 8460p is like the 8470p, the CPU is even a socketed one, so there's room for upgrades too, assuming they aren't already maxed out. Learning to make do with older, limited hardware can be a very educational and even enlightening experience.

truenamenofame··on Why did we ever think a student's first programming language didn't matter?
>I also don't understand the article's interest in decoupling programming from math

It's an unfortunate side effect of America's long acceptance of anti-intellectualism. And people like this perpetuate it by coddling Americans who were somehow allowed to get through high school without even a basic understanding of the fundamentals of math. I am also a victim of this defeatist way of thinking, and have worked hard to appreciate math and learn it on my own to undo the trauma instilled in me by math teachers who simply taught formulas for us to remember to pass tests that we immediately cleared from our memory afterward.

truenamenofame··on Ask HN: Words of encouragement for someone lost in life?
Lots of great advice in this thread. I hope you don't get overwhelmed thinking about what and how to apply them to your own life. Just remember that it's better to do something than to do nothing. That you're still considering trying dating apps means that you still have hope. As such, suicide is off the table because it makes the possibility of happiness in this current life 0%. Please don't give up. I'm 25, roughly in the same situation, without a decade of programming and mathematics discipline to show for it. I'm going to keep trying. I even gathered the will to study and put myself into college recently. I was able to apply for healthcare assistance recently too. One step at a time, I'm progressing toward some place better than where I was before. We're not losers. The real losers are the ones who give up before the game ends.

One actionable thing you can do starting tomorrow or when convenient is to start working out. Start with calisthenics and move to lifting weights when you feel comfortable. The most important thing is consistency. You're gonna be doing a lot of work to get to where you want, so you can't stay at the same level of fitness. You need to keep getting stronger, so that your body and mind can handle more and more, so that what were previously mountains become anthills you can walk right over.

truenamenofame··on The Health Benefits of Coffee
You just need to buy a coffee sack or something similar to it and a big pitcher. 1 cup of ground coffee (coarse ground preferred but regular ground coffee works too) to 4 cups of water. Or 1:4 ratio of your preferred measurement vessel should work. The grounds go in the sack and then you put the sack into your pitcher with water. In about 18-24 hours, you can remove the sack and have a pitcher of cold brew coffee for the rest of the week.

EDIT: 18-24 hours refrigerated

truenamenofame··on Ask HN: A good Linux laptop below 1000€
If you go for a thinkpad, I advise going for a model that still uses the dual battery system. Some models I can think of: t480, x270, p51s, p52s. Since you'll be running Linux, you'll need all the battery power you can get and having dual batteries make hotswapping possible. Also avoid getting models that have an nvidia dedicated gpu if possible.
truenamenofame··on Policies that make the poor less poor
You could try giving them money. I'm poor and after the reality of covid hit and I was out of a job, I confided in my best friend to give me a loan of $5000 in order to give me some sense of security, so that I could snap myself out of the curse of poverty-induced short term thinking. The kind of thinking that pushes someone into bad dead-end jobs instead of going back to school or learning a trade to gain superior skills because paying rent in the short term is more important, eat cheap nutritonally-void junk food to save a buck, and to skip the health insurance and pray for good luck that they may not get sick or have a freak accident everyday of their living, breathing lives. I have not actually used a single dollar of my friend's money. My mind was clear enough to figure out how to apply for unemployment insurance. Then the inflow of unemployment insurance only gave me compound interest on that sense of security that could only be afforded by a good enough lump sum of money in my savings account. At some point I decided I don't need the unemployment insurance anymore because I didn't want to just find some random minimum wage job to pay the bills (which was no longer a fear due to the money I had in my savings). So I got off of it, and then started making key efforts everyday to put myself into community college. So that's the short/long story of how I was able to find myself back in school in my late 20s after a long 7 years of struggle. Could've saved a lot of time if someone gave me that loan 7 years ago, but hey, better late than never.
