troystribling··on Apple’s Fingerprint ID May Mean You Can’t ‘Take the Fifth’
"But if we move toward authentication systems based solely on physical tokens or biometrics — things we have or things we are, rather than things we remember"

If the argument is valid it seems that it could also be applied to public key encryption.

troystribling··on Mustafa's Space Drive: An Egyptian Student's Quantum Physics Invention
This is the Quantum Ram Jet in Artur C. Clarks "Songs of a Distant Earth" from 1985 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Songs_of_Distant_Earth. It is based on the Dynamical Casimir Effect which is thought to have been observed, http://www.technologyreview.com/blog/arxiv/26813/
troystribling··on Roger Penrose Says Physics Is Wrong, From String Theory to Quantum Mechanics
It is thought that photosynthesis uses quantum computation to determine how to move energy internally within a cell. http://www.rsc.org/chemistryworld/Issues/2007/May/Photosynth...
troystribling··on Fun with math: Dividing one by 998001 yields a surprising result

troystribling··on New kind of metal in the deep Earth
Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is the combination of Maxwell's Equations in a moving frame of reference and The Navier Stokes Equation. So it includes both the impact of inertial and electromagnetic forces of the flow. MHD is the long wavelength limit of kinetic (particle) plasma theory. The Earths core has in the past been modeled as an MHD fluid but it is usually assumed to be incompressible. I am not aware of compressible models but I have not worked in this field in a decade.
troystribling··on New kind of metal in the deep Earth
Compressible Magnetohydrodynamics is what you are looking for. A search will turn up lots of articles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetohydrodynamics#Geophysics
troystribling··on Six Days without Food: Hacking Your Mind to Make Do with Far Less
Here is an article summarizing research on the nutrition benefits of grass feed vs. grain feed beef http://www.bulletproofexec.com/grass-fed-meat-part-1/
troystribling··on We’re not going to have a jobless recovery. We’re going to have a jobless future
You could argue that in the skill level required to transition from destroyed jobs to created has changed. When the economy transitioned from farming to manufacturing a farmer could begin working in a factory with little training. Now automation is beginning to eliminate jobs at some skill levels. For these displaced workers to find new jobs years of training could be required. If the rate that jobs are being eliminated is greater than the rate that workers can train for newly created jobs and reenter the workforce then there could be a larger percentage of unemployed workers than has been seen historically.
troystribling··on Which tech giants will still be around after 100 years?
SBC bought the company and used the name.
troystribling··on What percentage of people are alive today?
Here are a couple posts questioning the impact of infant mortality on ancient lifespan estimates, http://santafereview.com/chronicle/2011/02/01/ancient-mortal..., http://www.wonderquest.com/LifeSpan.htm both referencing this paper, http://www.animalsimulation.org/index.php?option=com_content....

A few statistics from the paper are the mean lifespans of the Kings of England and Scotland between 1000 and 1600 were about 50. This was also about the mean lifespan of people at court. In a monastic population studied only 5% lived past 45 and excavations of anglo-saxon cemeteries dated at 600-1000 CE found no one older than 45.

troystribling··on The Singularity in Our Past
In Henery Adams's audio biography 'The Education of Henry Adams'http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Education_of_Henry_Adams (i.e. Henery Adams the grandson of John Quincy Adams was a 19'th century historian). He discusses his theory of history. In his model history is driven by the law of Acceleration which discribes the exponential growth of energy consumption through the 19'th century http://www.bartleby.com/159/34.html. Exponential growth in energy consumption was viewed as unsustainable as early as the 1860's but Henry Adams noted that it continued throughout his life up until the time he wrote his biography in 1904 and he saw no end to it.
troystribling··on Joe Stump: Your city sucks (And so does mine)
I usually go to the HN Readers Group http://www.meetup.com/JoinHNDC/ and DC Ruby Users Group Meetups http://www.meetup.com/dcruby/ meetups. Both meet regularly and usually have 30 to 50 people attending.
troystribling··on The Sun is changing the rate of radioactive decay
There is always uncertainty in science. That is its strength not weakness. creationists and many others do understand this.
troystribling··on The Web Is Dead. Long Live the Internet
One big difference is that a lot of people are willing to pay $0.99 for and app while the same charge for a web page bookmark would not go over well.
troystribling··on Ray Kurzweil does not understand the brain
You are correct for consumer electronics. But commercial and scientific computing are driving increases computational power and density that do not seem to be letting up. In the 4 years I have worked in hosting the amount of server you can get in a 4u box has gone from 8 2.5GHz cores to 24 2.5GHz cores and from 32GB to 256GB. The storage requirements and compute requirements for applications are also increasing substantially.
troystribling··on Rooms irc app removed after 4 minutes in app store
I thought this was playing audio not streaming it. A streaming app would need both background network access and the ability to play audio in the background. See the Background Audio section at http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/documentation/iPho.... It is not clear here that network access is permitted. Being vague in the permitted application functions for each mode makes it difficult to know what exactly os permitted.
troystribling··on Rooms irc app removed after 4 minutes in app store
The NPR application appears to be using it to stream audio which is not strictly VOIP.
troystribling··on Finger painting on the iPad
He is painting the Fourier components of the image from longest to shortest wavelength.
troystribling··on Xcode 4 public preview - Single window, LLVM 2.0, streamlined editing

troystribling··on High Ground Maneuver (Scott Adams on the iPhone 4 press conference)
Mine was delivered Friday. One of the first things I did was to try the death grip. To get the signal to degrade I had to hold it in a position essentially embedding in the lower left corner of the phone in my palm while holding it unnaturally tight. Then there was only a single bar loss in signal. Holding the phone in a comfortable left or right handed position had no effect on the signal. If there would have not been the news around it I would have never noticed it. Even the technology press seems to be degenerating to Fox.
troystribling··on Switching to Android
I have had an iPod since 2005 and have never purchased music from iTunes. You can purchase or rip music from anywhere and put it on any Apple device. eMusic and Amazon have been the main online music stores I have used. Many people seem to assume that Apple devices can only purchase music from Apple music stores but this has never been the case.
troystribling··on It's Apple vs. Google in the New Phone Fight
It is likely that they have saturated their market. Apple has 90% market share in PCs > $1000. http://www.macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/apple_...
troystribling··on What the 2010 Mac has in common with the 1984 Apple II
People seem to be associating the apparent neglect of Macs at the WWDC, the marketing focus on the iOS products and the delay in OSX 10.7 as the beginning of a phase out of the platform. It is most likely just a focus of scarce company resources on launching the new product line.
troystribling··on New York Times Forces Apple to Pull Popular ‘Pulse’ iPad Newsreader

troystribling··on Kurzweil’s Next Book: Creating An Artificial Mind
These two podcasts, http://twit.tv/fib52, http://twit.tv/fib55, of an interview with Rahul Sarpeshkar discussing Ultra Power Bioelectronics provide a good summary of current knowledge on how the brain works. There is a decent understanding of how many areas computationally function. The biggest surprises were that the brain is a hybrid digtal/analog computer and something similar jpeg compression is in operation in the brains visual system
