trose··on Beware of the Silicon Valley cult
If you read any of the discussions in r/cscareerquestions you'd think you're a failure for not making $150k straight out of college.
trose··on Signs of Liquid Water Found on Surface of Mars, Study Says
I'm kinda of this thought process as well. If there are hospitable conditions there and we haven't found microbes after a while, I think we should just start dumping tons of them over there. We need something to put some atmosphere there for us. Algae seems to be a really good bet.
trose··on Ellen Pao’s Gender-Bias Odyssey Ends as Kleiner Drops Judgment $276k Legal Fees
I'm mildly frustrated that this will be seen as a win by the MRA's. Yes, there was not sufficient evidence to back Pao's claims but anyone that has worked in an office environment with women present can attest to the fact that women still are not in equal standing with their male peers. There is a lot of work to be done in our society. I would love to live in a world where gender becomes insignificant to the point that it isn't discussed.
trose··on The HTTP/2 implementation
Ugh, gimme
trose··on World Airports Voronoi
There's definitely a handful of airports in Antarctica. Are they not "official"?
trose··on NASA’s Kepler Mission Discovers Bigger, Older Cousin to Earth
A much better telescope
trose··on Former Reddit CEO says the site's about to be purged
Yeah, I think its a vocal minority that is truly upset. The issue that compounds all of this is that it only takes a few thousand upvotes to reach the front page. So to extrapolate on your analogy, this is like the racist people in the corner protesting that they can't shout in the corner anymore. Meanwhile most of the shoppers didnt even realize that they were there and dont care enough to comment on the situation.
trose··on Former Reddit CEO says the site's about to be purged
He was highly inappropriate when he was CEO, once having a public flamewar with a disgruntled ex-employee. I'm not surprised by his behavior but I question his motives. Looking at his comment history he seems well aware that he is blacklisting himself from ever holding an executive title again. Maybe when you have nothing left to lose you just start seeking attention?
trose··on Former Reddit CEO says the site's about to be purged
I for one would a little sanitization of the site. There are always going to be weirdos posting horrendous content on the internet but I'm not particularly inclined to deal with that trash. I'd love a Reddit this is only cat pics, interesting stories from other users, and celebrity interviews. We dont need to make it easy for trolls to discuss their racist/ sexist/ bullshit and harass people.
trose··on Soloshot: Automatically film outdoor activities without a camera operator
So next we need to add some stabilization to this platform and then you can just stick it out on a bouy ^_^
trose··on Ask HN: I've constantly changed companies. Would I be considered unreliable?
Do not say you get bored easily. That is a huge red flag to potential employers.
trose··on SSD Prices in a Free Fall
Seems pretty plausible that we could create an SSD that would power up on a timer then couldn't we? Am I missing something?
trose··on ECMAScript 2015 Approved
That changes a lot if your target market is big enterprise customers. Oh you don't support IE9? Well say goodbye to that market share.
trose··on Making an Untraceable AR-15 ‘Ghost Gun’
You can definitely reload rifle ammunition at home very easily. You just need to collect the brass cases after you've shot store-bought rounds or just go to an outdoor range and collect buckets of brass cases since most people just leave them.
trose··on Delivering Fast JavaScript Performance in Microsoft Edge
Exciting stuff. It feels really weird for someone to write a blog in which they discover that 95% of websites use minified JS though. I guess it's nice to see Microsoft making some progress but you have to wonder what's going on over there if they seem to clueless to the state of the modern web.
trose··on Delivering Fast JavaScript Performance in Microsoft Edge
> Web developers need a new machine just to test the new IE

False.

trose··on SpaceX – Pad abort test successful
> At the moment it feels like they're making progress every other week.

And they intend to accelerate their schedule as they go! This is so exciting!

trose··on Amazon drops gendered categories for toys
Maybe we need to have girl-branded thought-provoking toys in the meantime to deal with parents that force these stereotypes on their children. Princess model rockets and Frozen science kits.
trose··on Supreme Court Rules Extending Traffic Stop for Dog Sniff Unconstitutional [pdf]
Yes, people shouldn't be arrested for possession.
trose··on Rocket Lab's engine has electric turbos and 3D-printed primary components
Looks like it'll be more like $5-6 million per launch.

trose··on Rocket Lab's engine has electric turbos and 3D-printed primary components
I'm just reciting this from memory but I think spaceX launches are currently $50-100 million per launch. If they can achieve reusable rockets it'll be on the order of a few hundred thousand per launch though.
trose··on SpaceX Plans to Land Next Falcon 9 on Solid Ground
I think they've ruled out the barge landing at this point. Seems like even with the stabilization, there is still too much movement. I dont see any reason they couldn't bring it back over water onto a landing pad. It should be really easy to keep the landing pad clear.
trose··on Space X CR6 First stage landing
THE best part in my opinion is that they live stream every mission and are very transparent about failures. I think they realize how many geeks and engineers are watching and that we understand that failure !== defeat.
trose··on SpaceX CRS-6 Launch Webcast
While it's possible to inject the dragon capsule anywhere and get it's orbit in line with the ISS, its much more economical to inject it really close to the ISS so they dont need to do as much work to finish the trip.
trose··on Amazon Can Now Test Its Delivery Drones in the U.S
Hopefully Amazon develops some stealthier drones for this program. One commercial drone can sound like an angry swarm of bees on its own. Being anywhere near a distribution center could because maddening if they have hundreds of drones coming and going.

This could also be some inexperienced non-technical person just being a nosey busy-body as well. Not sure why the devs dont just give him a db backup though. If they're a large site that could take a while but hey, the guy paying the bills asked for it. Maybe there's more to the story? I would total not comply if I was waiting on a paycheck or something like that.
trose··on Ask HN: Isn't networking usually a waste of time?
Networking at work is way more productive. I dont go to tech meetups very much anymore because I get annoyed at the "idea man" types that have no technical ability but want to find someone stupid enough to work for equity.
trose··on Researchers improve efficiency of human walking
I guess you could say he's got a _spring_ in his step...
