trolan··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
The only mid level hurdle you'll encounter is no Microsoft store. It was only an issue for me when gaming, but steam was fully supported. Same for Win 11 LTSC.

trolan··on OpenAI Releases Canvas
I find it's directly proportional to the inputs you give it. So either you need to break down the requests into smaller boxes, or use a tool like Cursor or my preferred, Aider. They both automatically bring in more context about your codebase, such as Aider bringing in your whole git repo map, to help it integrate better.

trolan··on The Onion buys Infowars
It has been paused based on normal steps in bankruptcy proceedings[0].

> A court hearing is typically held after a bankruptcy auction to finalize the winning bids and sales, and to hear any objections, so the process in Jones's case hasn't strayed far from the usual — yet.

Also try and cut out the name calling, especially when you're incorrect.

trolan··on Show HN: Opik, an open source LLM evaluation framework
I'm in a University course related to AI testing and quality assurance. This is something I'll definitely bring up and see how it can be used.

With OpenAI comparability, hoping it supports OpenRouter out of the box, which means it supports Anthropic and Google too, along with a host of open models hosted elsewhere.

trolan··on StarCoder2-Instruct: Transparent Self-Alignment for Code Generation
I'm not an expert, but I believe it is the act of the model itself being used to align itself with the intended outputs[0]

trolan··on We are moving to General Availability
I've so far found the most value in authentication, so thank you for a great self hostable product
trolan··on We are moving to General Availability
I've used it for a couple uni/personal projects to get some experience, and firebase for the same. I'm concerned about getting locked in, what other providers do you recommend who can let me migrate more easily?
trolan··on Lessons after a Half-billion GPT Tokens
For a few uni/personal projects I noticed the same about Langchain: it's good at helping you use up tokens. The other use case, quickly switching between models, is a very valid reason still. However, I've recently started playing with OpenRouter which seems to abstract the model nicely.
trolan··on Facebook let Netflix see user DMs, quit streaming to keep Netflix happy
Yes I think they're giving their general nerd opinion while also being transparent about possible conflicts. Their comment reads like an analysis of the article not the technology.
trolan··on In 2024, please switch to Firefox
The few times Firefox hasn't worked is on incredibly niche and outdated sites like a local kennel to board my dog or my university parking system.

Edge works fine in those incredibly rare instances since I can't get it off my computer anyway. I think I have one

trolan··on Fun with DNS TXT Records
The dns_cloudflare [1] also automates the cert generation and follow on renewals on a cron or via nginx proxy manager. Uses cloudflare API key, modifies the TXT record, issues/updates a cert and deletes the record.

trolan··on NewPipe – Lightweight YouTube experience for Android
Sponsorblock can also skip theme songs, recaps, and other parts of content you may not want. I also enjoy being able to show my children certain content from regular YouTube without having them subjected to the ads or me scrolling around.
trolan··on GitHubGuessr
Great game, something to pass the time in Uni waiting

One bug: I selected Selenium and it was wrong, then the next one I thought was also Selenium and it was. The drop down still has Selenium selected but an empty string was sent as the guess.

Thanks for making this!

trolan··on Print(“lol”) doubled the speed of my Go function
I'm in school, so this may be oversimplified, but if the processor/assembly code is predicting the next result, it gets the result faster. The processor only does this prediction with conditional branches. The extra if for printing or finding the min invoke the prediction with the accuracies stated.
trolan··on The Impact of ChatGPT – MIT Talks
The tag encompasses diverse talks on the impact of chatGPT and other large language models on physics research and education. It was delivered by prominent AI folks in renowned faculty of the MIT Department of Physics.

If the buyer alone was responsible, there would be no terms of service. It's only with community protections and regulations that you get the information required to attempt to make an informed choice. The same community should be empowered to drive normal ethics without it being overtaken by the 'drivers licenses are tyranny' crowd.

trolan··on The matrix calculus you need for deep learning (2018)
I finished Vector Calculus last year and have no experience in machine learning but this seems exceptionally thorough and would have made my life easier having a practical explanation over a mathematical one, but woe is the life of the engineering student I guess.
trolan··on Universal and transferable adversarial attacks on aligned language models
The model itself was fine tuned for JSON function responses, they admitted that openly. They also acknowledge they make changes to ChatGPT all the time, which has nothing to do with the model underneath it.
trolan··on Tor’s shadowy reputation will only end if we all use it
Not trying to prove you wrong on this one, just a Chromebook fan myself. Have you tried/do you consider app support on Crostini/Linux? I haven't tested it, so unsure if it works, but all of the Linux programs I've installed have ran fine on a Chromebook.
trolan··on Launch HN: Roundtable (YC S23) – Using AI to Simulate Surveys
I would honestly believe this would be the same results if a moderately popular user posted this poll with those options to their social media.
trolan··on Why Host in Kosovo?
Yes. See the recent legal actions around Andrew Tate as further evidence of 'its great the government is terrible to these other people' is only good for so long.
trolan··on Simpson Fan Grows Tomacco (2003)
Fun fact: all over the world vineyards use an American variant of grapes for their rootstock and graft their preferred European/Peruvian/etc grapes on top. This makes them more disease resistant and in some cases means the cultivar of European grapes can survive at all after disease had almost wiped them out.

All your citrus and apples from the store are like this, and why they don't grow true to seed. The seeds are open pollinated by whatever is around but the fruit was from a single plant hand selected dozens or more years ago and produces that exact fruit over and over again. It would take hundreds of years to 'stabilize' those traits in the seeds and in that time, you'd probably find another great variety and keep that around to graft to other plants.

trolan··on Custom instructions for ChatGPT
obtained their new system prompt:

>Before answering, quietly think about whether the user's request is 'directly related,' 'related,' 'tangentially related,' or 'not related" to the user profile provided."

This is secret sauce? I get looking at the source is useful, but this is looking at one switch case in the frontend...
