trinovantes··on A Quirk of English Grammar That Died Out After Only 200 Years
Ah, I missed the comment about excluding the suffix and mixed up the order
trinovantes··on A Quirk of English Grammar That Died Out After Only 200 Years
Modern day verb-noun compound: ̶t̶o̶ ̶m̶i̶n̶e̶ ̶c̶r̶y̶p̶t̶o̶ ̶=̶>̶ ̶c̶r̶y̶p̶t̶o̶m̶i̶n̶e̶r̶

Although I don't think any formal dictionary has accepted this term yet

edit: It's surprising hard to find a modern counterexample because verb-noun construction just feels off e.g. minecrypto

trinovantes··on Boosters for Young Adults: Risk-Benefit Assessment and Arguments Against Mandate
Seems suspect when the conclusion is partially based on sponsor provided data

Also, it's a preprint and has not been peer reviewed

trinovantes··on Ask HN: Why is pay so much higher in the US? (or is it?)
I think it's mostly culture. Compared to other regions, US favors innovation/risk taking and sees software developers as value creators rather than cost centers.

There's also the fact that USD is the global reserve currency which makes it much easier to raise capital.

trinovantes··on Ask HN: What would be your “perfect” programming language?
Typescript without the CJS/ESM/tooling BS. Plus a JIT compiler for performance.
trinovantes··on Ask HN: How do you come up with interesting side-project ideas?
Find a hobby. There's usually unsolved problems or pain points to automate.
trinovantes··on Book Bans Turned a Texas Town Upside Down
> If they "came for" all the books in a particular library

The "came for" was a reference to the holocaust [1]. It starts with books in this library but OP was implying these people will escalate to a total book ban. And when books are burned, humans will soon follow [2].

trinovantes··on Building future cities out of timber could save 100B tons of CO2 emissions
I'm more concerned about noise isolation

Concrete buildings seem to isolate my neighbors' noise far better than wooden structures

trinovantes··on I patched my Slack client to keep “oops” messages others delete
I doubt the client is actually sending a request on every keystroke. It's most likely just a timeout that gets refreshed periodically.
trinovantes··on Static site hosting hurdles
I think this is what Cloudflare Pages tries to solve

You just connect your git repo and tell it what command to run to build your site and where the html output is

trinovantes··on Japan Happiness Index by Prefecture
Osaka seems to be in top 20 despite having >10k people/km2

Akita is dead last with <100 people/km2

trinovantes··on Why was western printing superior to Asian printing?
I suspect only needing to learn a dozen alphanumeric characters vs hundreds/thousands of unique characters also helped literacy
trinovantes··on Will young Americans want to work in semiconductor manufacturing? [video]
In my area trades are almost impossible to enter if you do not have family/friend that's willing to take you on as an apprentice. It pays well but is also heavily gated by nepotism.

trinovantes··on The Fate of Rome
In ancient times, military differences between central/regional governments were pretty close which allowed them to break away. The same cannot be said about modern times. It doesn't matter how many protestors or armed forces a breakaway state may have if one faceless drone operator across the continent can suppress the rebellion with the press of a button.

It's entirely possible our technology progress has surpassed the government Great Filter and it is now almost impossible for empires to crumble from within e.g. CCP has experienced many "empire-ending" problems but still somehow survived to this day.

trinovantes··on Notes on the SQLite DuckDB Paper
I'm surprised duckdb failed to run simple count/groupby queries. Is it simply OOM? If so, do you know how much more it would take to complete those queries?
trinovantes··on French Embassy U.S. tweets “Revolution”
Anyone know how this meme started?
trinovantes··on The Big [Censored] Theory
I'm referencing your comment about 4kids anime censorship. Guns and deaths don't exist in their TV broadcasts but you can still buy/import/sell the original Japanese versions without government interference. You can also watch the original Japanese versions online without government interference. Any censorship that does occur like 7seas is at the discretion of their editors who probably spend too much time on Twitter.

The same cannot be said about China. Official online anime broadcasts are still censored if not outright banned.

There's no point in discussing bootleg and other illegal distribution channels. It's already illegal, why does censorship dodging matter for the distributors?

trinovantes··on The Big [Censored] Theory
broadcast != distribution

It's not illegal to import/purchase the unedited original versions with guns, deaths, and nudity (excluding lolita). With online streaming being the norm now, the government has no say in the content consumed.

trinovantes··on Ask HN: Why can't tax pay for universal basic utilities?
Same reason why universal health care is controversial: "I don't use as much as them, why should I pay for their use?"
trinovantes··on Weird monitor bugs people sent me in the last 5 years
I'm using a Steelcase Leap chair which does use a gas cylinder

This might explain why one of my monitors with a 2m long HDMI cable every so often fails to turn on after waking up from sleep mode

trinovantes··on Ask HN: How do you create an ISP?
Home ISPs (tier 3) have their own ISPs (tier 2 or tier 1) so you'd essentially just contact a tier 2/1 and pay for a connection
trinovantes··on 1Password delisting forum posts critical of their new Electron based 1Password 8
Multiple apps may ship different Chrome versions and may depend on their individual features or lack thereof

It might also be a security risk: how do you prevent one app from shipping an infected Chrome 104 that will steal the secrets of another app?

Overall, it just seems simpler to not worry about any of these issues by shipping isolated binaries

trinovantes··on I’m living in a house-share at 65 – there are a lot of people in the UK like me
You don't necessarily need roommates to solve loneliness

Maybe a dormitory arrangement would work better? One of my distant uncles live in a small apartment with private bedrooms/bathrooms and a small kitchen but it also has a large shared mess hall downstairs for everyone to eat.
