trinovantes··on Apple prevents their users from taking screenshots of Top Gun Maverick
This is a case where the oxford comma would help remove ambiguity

I think it's supposed to list:

- disables copying

- (in some cases) prevents recording/broadcasting

- hides the text

Where "some cases" is simply some minimum iOS version and/or some other unknown hardware configuration that allows the device to prevent video recording

trinovantes··on Feel the power of the Manifest v3
Or maybe most Firefox users disable trackers and thus don't show up on Google Analytics
trinovantes··on Why JWTs Suck as Session Tokens (2017)
Cookie sessions are usually stored in fast caches like redis so the performance hit is negligible. Most people will never reach the performance ceiling of a beefy single redis instance so why bother complicating the system?
trinovantes··on [dead]
I'm not sure if a metric with a mean of <1 and std.dev that looks like >1 is a reliable indicator of anything

The author then extrapolated non-changing landfall hurricane frequency in the US to "weather-related disasters are declining not increasing" (presumably all weather disasters worldwide)

I'm sure the people in Pakistan would love to hear that it's "just a regular flood" or the people along the Yangtz that it's "just a regular drought"

It's pretty cool that they have a web client too

I'm surprised at how much stuff there are above me if not for all the light polution

trinovantes··on Immigration accounts for over 94% of Canada’s population growth in Q2 of 2022
There are a lot of illegal housing arrangements like 2-3 families in a basement that cities tend overlook (utility usage not matching with official data) because that's the only way they can sustain the population/economic growth without triggering NIMBYs
trinovantes··on Nuclear strike odds moved from “single” to “double digits” in past week
I remember an old sci-fi anime where the wars weren't fought with nuclear weapons because their world had "neutron-jammers" that prevented neutrons from triggering chain reactions
trinovantes··on Show HN: uFuzzy.js – A tiny, efficient fuzzy search that doesn't suck
I see some results when intraMax is set to Inf but it doesn't seem to pick up "Llanowar Elves" despite the other libs hitting it first or second. If I narrow the list to only mtg_16000, I get 0 results.
trinovantes··on Show HN: uFuzzy.js – A tiny, efficient fuzzy search that doesn't suck
It doesn't seem to handle missing spaces

trinovantes··on Gaming CS Interviews
In the worst case, you need to insert every element into your set to find out if there's no duplicate hence it'll take O(n log n) too
trinovantes··on Gaming CS Interviews
Good point but it's not exactly a free lunch. You're trading memory for the speedup.

You can also use radix sort for what I'd like to call "fake" O(n) sort since physical hardware puts an upper limit on the hidden constant.

trinovantes··on Gaming CS Interviews
Does it? Set insertion is O(log n) and you need to insert n items.
trinovantes··on AMD Ryzen 9 7950X vs Intel Core i9-13900K
Not a bug. That page has a canonical url:

trinovantes··on Ask HN: What type of math should the next gen of coders be learning in school?
You're going to need calculus if you want to work with PID control systems or audio/signal processing
trinovantes··on Is anyone else excited by the TypeScript compiler? [pdf]
This seems to be a very tiny subset of TS. To get the full language, you'd probably have to link with a libuv runtime. Would be interesting to see if Microsoft decides to pursue this in the future.
trinovantes··on Layoffs at Canadian tech startups
Yea, it's a bit silly to call the largest Canadian company by market cap a year ago a "startup"
trinovantes··on Avoiding homework with code and getting caught
These online learning platforms should also consider drawing on canvas e.g. flutter to make it harder to scrape screen contents

I think they could also just check the isTrusted field in the Event since that can't be overwritten without a custom compiled browser

Heard good things about Jane Street
trinovantes··on How Tokyo avoided the affordable housing crisis
Probably best to just restrict both NYC/Tokyo to their urban areas and their respective housing costs which is what this blog post is originally about. Otherwise, you can just say there are "free" homes in "Tokyo" because there's a lot of abandoned homes in the rural parts that you can squat.

For Tokyo, I think discussions about population change should be focused on the 23 central wards. Here's a more up-to-date source: https://www.toukei.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/jsuikei/js-index.htm (it seems to be 14mil today vs 9mil in 2016)

Most places <$1k USD/month seem to be 20-25 sq meters

trinovantes··on How Tokyo avoided the affordable housing crisis
The only way you can get 37 million people in Tokyo is if you account for the entire Tokyo prefecture (similar to state/province). The western parts are largely rural and accounts for most of the population decline. The actual urban area in the central wards are still growing.

trinovantes··on Subprime loans for college hiding in plain sight
I think the 4 year degree requirement is more of a proxy for ability to learn and adapt

It's hard to shake off the bias that a post-secondary graduate would be more likely to be a quick learner than a high school graduate even if in reality they're effectively the same

trinovantes··on How to Bypass Cloudflare: A Comprehensive Guide
I wonder if fake bot detectors can distinguish between any Google IP like GCP instances (i.e. do they simply check the ASN) or crawler specific IPs

Or maybe google crawler also runs on GCP and it's indistinguishable from regular $5 compute users

But this doesn't explain why Issues are indexable on Google

What's the difference between a spammer creating their own repo and creating a bunch of issues with spam links vs their own repo and creating a bunch of wiki pages with spam links?
