trident1000··on The IRS is being investigated for using location data without a warrant
This government under any administration seems to have a real problem with obeying the constitution which tells them to fuck off. Asset forfeiture, abusing fisa courts, NSA, wiretapping political opponents, forced lock-downs, stop and frisk.

The issue is there is no repercussion for doing something unconstitutional and having a court strike you down years later. Prison time fixes this calculus fast; there should be new legislation on this ideally.

trident1000··on Police are requesting data from smart speakers
Do you not feel violated knowing that every word you say is/can be recorded by big tech companies? Even if you turn permissions off theres always that "whoops it was a glitch" moment that inevitably comes down the line.
trident1000··on Police are requesting data from smart speakers
Why anyone would put a smart speaker in their home is beyond me.
trident1000··on Covid-19 contact tracing study finds children key to spread
Theres been 1 million deaths worldwide with a population of 7 billion. Thats 0.00014285714

The odds you die of C19 is overwhelmingly slim especially now with the therapeutics and better understanding of how to treat it. If you're old you are at higher risk (about 2% chance over 65) but thats the case of anything when you're old. Eventually something gets you as you are basically walking on a tight rope. Everybody dies.

Old scared politicians have fucked the younger generation out of self preservation and greed once again. Theres absolutely no reason to shut down society like this. Wear a mask and move on.

trident1000··on The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz (2014) [video]
How did that work out for the people of Hong Kong? The govt laughed at them with their signs and umbrellas. Now they can be shipped off for posting a tweet the CPP doesnt like.

On a grander scope, notice how Taiwan has not been invaded by China despite their decades of rhetoric. They're armed, the price is high and the move would be risky.

And no you dont just pray at the time you need a weapon and it pops up in your hands. That's not how things logistically work. Also a big part of it is an ongoing cognitive deterrence. That doesnt happen when people dont have them at the present time.

trident1000··on Time to Pardon Edward Snowden?
The reason he will never be pardoned has nothing to do with if his leaks were merited or not merited (they clearly were as the activities of the govt were proven illegal). Its because then you green light a govt leaker in critical programs you open pandoras box for govt secrets spilling out and you can lose control. Keeping employees/contractors in fear that they will never stop chasing you is a good way to stop people from doing this.

Looks about what I would have expected

Define "effective". Can a government do anything they want when they fear the people, no. Can they legislate in progressive ways that build an economy and keep people safe, absolutely.
trident1000··on Why American cities can’t keep up with infrastructure maintenance (2017)
Thats such an absurd opinion. People live in suburbs because you can raise a family at an affordable price point and not have your children see people shitting on the sidewalk. People also dont want to live around millions of people in close proximity if they can afford it. I lived in NYC for 10 years and its a complete trap that you can't escape because you dont have the logistics or financial means to move out (and I had a white collar job in finance). I had to get very well off before I could move out. Thats the primary reason cities become over-crowded. Its a one way street especially if you're single. Not because they're so great.
trident1000··on Coinbase offers exit package for employees not comfortable with its mission
We essentially have terrorist organizations like the ACLU that hound companies until they meet their demands. Thats a primary reason why.
trident1000··on Netflix CEO explains why he pays technologists huge salaries
Honestly I respect that and prefer that as well; just tell me up front so I can move on and not waste any more time. I come from a wall street background and did break through eventually, but they just leave you hanging with no follow up. And the recruiters treat candidates like dates they are ghosting, its really not an acceptable way to treat a human being after they put days even weeks into preparing and coming in.

Why do they do this? Because there is absolutely no downside to leaving you hanging and then they have backup plans to fill the spot. Its also just emails and coordination that pays them no dividends, so they don't care. You're dead to them.

The worst is when companies post a position they never intend to even fill just to collect resumes and see their options.

The whole thing is very reminiscent of the dating scene which is not very professional.

trident1000··on Hal Finney’s proposal for optimizing Bitcoin to be enabled in Bitcoin Core
"where signatures can be added even years after the fact when needed"

Why would you need this to be the case? In my mind (im not an expert) I just imagine schnorrs batching signatures into one tx on the chain. And then its done. Why would you need to add years after?

trident1000··on Hal Finney’s proposal for optimizing Bitcoin to be enabled in Bitcoin Core
Yeah that makes sense. Better to play by the rules even though they could so easily just push it through anonymously and there's nothing anyone could do about it. But its better for the image of Bitcoin and of course the known teams behind the updates.
trident1000··on Hal Finney’s proposal for optimizing Bitcoin to be enabled in Bitcoin Core
I wonder if this is something a hardware wallet provider could solve on their end in the software. Like one signature is a go for subsequent needed signatures as long as nothing changes with the transaction or something like that.
trident1000··on Hal Finney’s proposal for optimizing Bitcoin to be enabled in Bitcoin Core
Why was a patent even respected with a decentralized system that doesnt even have cash flow/profits?
trident1000··on Universal basic income gains support in South Korea after Covid
So I have one question with UBI if anyone can answer. What is to stop people every election cycle from simply voting in the people who promise them the most money? Couldnt that spiral our of control?
trident1000··on Study shows proof that a safer UV light effectively kills virus causing Covid-19
Not impossible either:

"A Cedars-Sinai research team is in the pre-clinical stages of developing a technology that harnesses intermittent ultraviolet (UV) A light for treating viruses and bacteria. The technology has not been tested or used on patients. Cedars-Sinai has filed for patents related to the technology and has signed a licensing agreement with Aytu BioScience with the aim of potentially enabling near-term use as a COVID-19 intervention for critically ill, intubated patients."

It was a suggestion to explore it (all possibilities).

trident1000··on Study shows proof that a safer UV light effectively kills virus causing Covid-19
Remember when people went ballistic when Trump suggested UV light therapy could be a treatment. (probably still isnt but it was considered a scientific impossibility that UV light does anything to a virus at the time).
trident1000··on Trump offered to pardon Assange if he provided source for DNC emails – lawyer
Ill put my tin foil hat on and say the internet is completely manipulated with fake commenters for a host of reasons...because it is. Probably something like 70/30 fake to real proportion.
trident1000··on Facebook Accused of Watching Instagram Users Through Cameras
Kind of absurd there is not a physical camera close feature on phones at this point.
trident1000··on Oracle’s TikTok deal accomplishes nothing
As others have pointed out this deal is absurd. Its not about user data its about manipulation of the US populous through unknown algos by the Chinese Communist Party. They're all over western social media as well with cells and bots. Both things should be dealt with.
trident1000··on Ex-Google boss Eric Schmidt: US 'dropped the ball' on innovation
Alpha Go was already launched when Google acquired it. Youre a moron. I dont know what elese to say.
trident1000··on Ex-Google boss Eric Schmidt: US 'dropped the ball' on innovation
No not reversed. This is public information.
trident1000··on Ex-Google boss Eric Schmidt: US 'dropped the ball' on innovation
It was developed by DeepMind Technologies which was later acquired by Google.
trident1000··on Ex-Google boss Eric Schmidt: US 'dropped the ball' on innovation
alpha go was acquired if Im not mistaken. Sure on the others.
trident1000··on Ex-Google boss Eric Schmidt: US 'dropped the ball' on innovation
Google has had no serious innovation in 20 years. Issue the dividend already and stop calling yourself a technology growth company.
trident1000··on Big European states call for cryptocurrency curbs to protect consumers
People should be given warnings, financial products should be required to be transparent and explained well with the risks, and scammers should be gone after and placed in prison.

But people should have every right to make terrible investment decisions and lose all their money. There are investments in crypto that are good and bad just as in the stock market. Some people turn anything into gambling and thats a personal issue.

trident1000··on Facebook Fired Employee Who Collected Evidence of Potential Political Bias
Literally had my comment to you as flagged and removed. Point proven.
trident1000··on US to ban transactions with ByteDance and WeChat in 45 days
Theres an incredible amount of foreign propaganda in western social media anyway. Twitter took down like a million CCP accounts the other month (they made an announcement about it) and thats just the ones they know about. This is a step thats at least in spirit probably makes sense but there are more larger issues. Reddit literally has an API to comment...you think all those policial default subs are real comments? Not a chance. Reddit doesnt care because it drives engagement.

This type of thing happens to people on the right so often it doesn't even make the news anymore.
