tricky··on Is this the end of the Cannonball Run?
I got to drive a '77 911S once and it was pretty much the same except with more rattles and the noise was coming from the back. Fun car, but still no match for a 2022 Kia.
tricky··on Is this the end of the Cannonball Run?
Very much the same, here. One thing people may not realize is that 90mph in a 1980's Porsche feels a lot different than, say, 90mph in any car built today. A few months ago I got one of my old porsches back on the road. Feeling confident it was finally running ok, I punched it when a light turned green. The noise, vibration, smell and feeling from that vintage V8 was unreal. I felt like I was flying but I look over and a mom in a minivan, driving normally, was right alongside me.

Modern cars are safe, clean, and amazing.

tricky··on U.S. surgeons transplant pig heart into human patient
oh, the heart attacks weren't accidental. They imaged the pig real time while inducing a heart attack to see how the muscle deformed. I never did ask what they did with the dead pigs, but they did have special carts to wheel them around the hospital. People didn't like seeing sedated pigs in the hospital so they had a cart with high sides and they'd throw a sheet over it.
tricky··on U.S. surgeons transplant pig heart into human patient
You might be asking, why a pig? I don't know, but forever ago I wrote software for a cardiovascular imaging lab and pigs were their primary test subjects. I was like, "why pigs?" and the PI was like, "Imaging-wise, pig hearts aren't too different from humans. Plus, we can give them a heart attack in the scanner and not go to jail. Some labs use dogs. I just can't do that."
tricky··on Ask HN: Hacker News, but for Finance?
keep an eye out for quality forums, as well. I have been out of it for a long time, but on the quant side there was nuclearphynance.com and wilmott.com - I imagine there are less specialized forums with quality people out there somewhere.
tricky··on I resigned from Twitter
What kind of board allows an announcement like this to happen in such an uncontrolled way? I feel like this is just more evidence that Twitter's board is weak.
tricky··on More Casio Watch Mods
Same. Out of my entire collection, the 5610 gets the most wear because for me it is the perfect watch. It is so rugged, I can keep it on while wrenching on cars and it still looks fine after several years.
tricky··on Robert Caro and Kurt Vonnegut interview each other (1999)
Slice it in half or thirds. It feels weird chopping up a perfectly good book, but makes reading so much easier.
tricky··on Why the Wingdings Font Exists (2015)
nice! I worked at a place in 1999 that had an RTF file on a public share that had the passwords for everything. It was ok because it was encrypted with wingdings...
tricky··on [dead]
Yikes. Garmin avionics are extremely popular in the aviation and marine navigation world. There's a lot of times I wouldn't want to see "Unable to contact server" on my radar screen.
tricky··on Why Was Benjamin Franklin’s Basement Filled with Skeletons? (2013)
thank you for saving me a click!
tricky··on Deep Learning for Guitar Effect Emulation
You're right in the "this is one more tool in the belt" sense but there are modelers like the Kemper and Fractal already out there that make your guitar sound like... anyone... and they are really convincing. I'd argue this is almost a solved problem. Still cool, nonetheless.
tricky··on SUVs parked on cargo ships reveal scope of U.S. auto market glut
I feel like cash for clunkers destroyed a lot of value, prices went up, and consumers got little out of it.
tricky··on Gas selling for under $1 per gallon in 13 US states
sorry, "sticky" is wrong in the context of ethanol gas in a modern-ish tank for a few months. However, when any gasoline is exposed to oxygen it forms solids called "gums." My 1971 car has a tank that's vented to the air so it did form a layer of sticky gunk after about 15 years of sitting. Ethanol absorbs water which makes it "not want to burn," corrosive to metal components and it will deteriorate plastics and gaskets. Modern fuel systems are designed with this in mind. But, my '79 Porsche 928 with its mechanical fuel injection (an analog computer that runs on fuel and air pressures) really hates it.
tricky··on Gas selling for under $1 per gallon in 13 US states
This is 100% correct. After about 6 months in the tank, ethanol gas starts turning into sticky garbage that doesn't want to burn. I have a few classic cars that sit a lot. A couple times a year I drive an hour to my nearest ethanol-free gas station with a trunk load of gas cans. I'm sure it is incredibly dangerous, but I haven't had any fuel system problems since I started doing it.
tricky··on Smart devices are eating the market for accessibly-priced watches
The watch you linked has the 3159 module which really hits the sweet spot for features. You get radio sync, daylight savings, world clock, stop watch, 4 alarms, snooze, and countdown timer.

It is my beater watch but I end up wearing it more than any of my automatics. I keep my world time set to UTC which is great to have while digging through server logs. The alarms are nice. I use the countdown timer for pomodoro. Best part, it is always accurate and I never have to set it.

My only complaint is the backlight only stays on for 1.5 seconds.

There is a similar module with bluetooth, but I think the only feature you get is the ability to make the backlight last longer and to manage alarms.

Anyway, I highly suggest that one if you need to add a square to your collection. There are some better looking ones, I'm going to buy the all black, negative display one next. Searching gw-m5610bc should get you to it (but make sure you get the one with the radio. there's a cheaper all black one that doesn't have the 3159)

I was lucky enough to tour the Flugelbinder estate just last year. The gardens were breathtaking.
tricky··on Launch HN: Centaur Labs (YC W19) – Labeling Medical Images at Scale
Really glad to hear you're working on this problem. I've done a bit of grooming medical imaging datasets for AI projects. A big chunk of time is spent working on pipelines to properly de-identify the images. Everything from PHI hidden deep in the dicom headers to patient name burned into the image by the scanner or some workstation that opened it. How are you dealing with those challenges?
tricky··on A military technique for falling asleep in two minutes
You might be able to use normal, foam earplugs. If you sleep on your side, only use one plug for the ear that's not on the pillow. You'll need to get used to having them in your ears, though. I wore them as much as possible (even during the day) for a few weeks until they didn't bother me. Now I sleep like a champ. The only downside is I cannot sleep w/o them.
tricky··on Ask HN: What are some niche communities you enjoy?
Some of the DIY car communities/forums are a lot of fun. I spend too much time keeping an old Porsche on the road and the information and comradery available in the community is fantastic

tricky··on Cormac McCarthy Explains the Unconscious
I've read The Road twice. First as a son, then as a father. My dad and I went though some crap I couldn't grasp when I was young. The book made me feel like I could finally understand what he was going through. Why he did what he did. I've never had a book change me like the road had.

I read it again when my son was 4 months old. That's when I finally understood, at a visceral level, what it means to carry the fire. I think we're both going to be better because of it.

I will read the book one more time after my dad passes.

tricky··on How Do You Make Turbo Engines More Efficient? Just Add Water
What keeps a reservoir filled up with distilled water from freezing solid in cold weather? I bought a texas car off ebay and had it shipped up north. The day it dipped below freezing was the first day I learned that texas windshield washer fluid is mostly just colored water.

The physics behind MRI is great. All it does is line up the magnetic moments of all the hydrogen atoms in your body, flips their spin with a burst of energy then watches for electrons as they flip back to a lower energy state. Totally safe!

I was in a coverband and each of our wives were annoyed at how much time we practiced. We joked about naming the band "Men Facing Divorce." I went ahead and scooped these up and never did anything with them:

I got this one because it is awesome:

Heh, I forgot I owned this one (my startup analyzes USPTO data):

tricky··on What Makes an Electric Guitar Sound Like an Electric Guitar
I used a marshall tsl-100 with no pedals forever but had the exact same problems with levels and it murdered my back. I tried using a power brake attenuator but wound up buying a Reason amp that weighs like 20 lbs and can switch between 10-20 watts. It is amazing.
