trevormcneal··on I'm a fucking webmaster (2016)
I miss those times. I could spend hours complaining about the depressive current state of the web, I imagine being a newcomer to such world and have to handle the over complexity of the current scenario without knowing that things could be simpler.

I remember seeing a team member migrating a project from grunt to webpack, the project was just a 404 page. "You need to compile your assets" they say, just a cat *.css > site.css would do it. Or even better, just do it inside the HTML and that is it.

People who need a JS library to check if a number is odd or even went way too far, I'm not exaggerating - https://www.npmjs.com/package/is-odd

trevormcneal··on GraphQL Is a Trap?
Yes
trevormcneal··on Ask HN: Why can't I learn anymore?
the whole tech thing is changing fast, ageism is a true thing, in a scenario where most of the previous knowledge can be ignored, being a senior with 5 years of experience, 10 or 20 doesn't change much. Given that young people usually simp for the companies much more due to being naive, they have a huge preference in the hiring process.

Tech is removing the root of the knowledge, migrating from understanding the solution, to quick copy&paste from some places.

trevormcneal··on Ask HN: Why can't I learn anymore?
Notice the fast decline in the last 20 years? Even active X was less crappy than the most well-polished actual react project, and active X was crap. Even java applets did more and in an easier way than modern frameworks and JS shit.

One simple page, with login, logout, some search, and navigation nowadays require a few plugins, router, state management, lib for requests, lib to handle cookies, lib for JWT, etc...

trevormcneal··on Ask HN: Companies hiring for a 4-day workweek?
I recently tried and got exactly this, wouldn't be fair for the others to have to work more to compensate for me, and they wanted some committed to working. I will keep trying, maybe is the moment to shame these companies back to see if they change their behaviour.
trevormcneal··on Ask HN: Why are there so many companies trying to reinvent the terminal (badly)?
Same with "MLOps" tools... same with every niche, bunch of useless tools just trying to grab some market.

But this is not a recent thing, every time the current thing gets flooded with crap ideas competing for some market share (ie longtail theory).

Sometimes the old ideas are just rebuilt, nocode is just RAD with different branding, event sourcing is just ESB, microservices is basically SOA...

What is scary that actually very little is being created, and a huge amount of crap just resuscitates from old tech, or is a skewed version of some working technology which tries to make it different so it doesn't look like a complete ripoff.

I love terminals, but honestly there isn't much to improve there IMHO is already good, I admire those who try and honest people who try to get a good idea into the market, I despise completely people trying to push any random hello world as a product which is basically a spyware full of trackers.

trevormcneal··on Ask HN: CLI Tool for File Encryption?
GPG, I just plug this into my server and is done https://github.com/opsxcq/ansible-role-host-backup
trevormcneal··on Ask HN: Which new skills for a data science career?
Came here just to weight in for each and every point. This is the best answer so far.

PhD is seem as a magical badge of super power, even if you can get a job without one, consider having it, is a 1.5x-2x salary multiplier.

trevormcneal··on Ask HN: What bits of fundamental knowledge are productivity multipliers?
If you are doing too many parallel things and context switching become a PITA, have an org document for each of your tasks, write your thought, experiments with code and output, your decisions, keep a references list with links and other important things.

Is also quite commnon to go back to some tasks to copy some code or pattern which you used, this will save you a lot of time.

If you have ADHD, us it to keep focus, you can easily manage tasks inside an org document, even go to the point of using just the console for work if too many things distract you.

Also check where you waste more time, optimisation should be focused, trying to increase your performance in some task which is not a bottleneck will cost you more time than if you just don't do anything.

Most of the time I asked myself "what is the next step?" and "what I was doing?", as well creating small pieces of code which require a of plumbing/debugging to later on fit into a bigger system. So org is the most productive thing for me.

But consider what you want to improve, before trying to improve any/everything.

trevormcneal··on Research: ‘Ukraine war costs Russian military €20B per day’
Russia wont back off, Ukraine wont back off... Sooner or later will be cheaper to start throwing nukes, this shit got too barbaric already.
trevormcneal··on Don't Use RAR
Don't listen to peasants, use RAR
trevormcneal··on Ukraine calls on hacker underground to defend against Russia
I can say that I know people who are much less skilled than you and also less ethic, that are hacking into any low hanging fruit that they can and selling a shell (access) to those systems to FSB. I imagine that Ukraine would have a similar program to pay for such kind of access on Russia infrastructure or government systems.
trevormcneal··on In our cashless society, we need to take digital jail seriously
AFAIK in US you need a fair trial before being punished, this is on the 10 amendments.
trevormcneal··on In our cashless society, we need to take digital jail seriously
somehow people with the cognitive capacity of a rotten potato would call you science denier for being pro freedom. I'm not talking about vaccines and such, but being pro freedom as in being against a survilance state which can fuck you up at any time and has total control using coercion over all aspects of your life.

We got at such stage in history which is impossible even to have an honest debate about freedom without having legal problems and risking our careers to just end. Let's hope internet still a safe place for this for a while.

trevormcneal··on Cyberpunk 2077 Update 1.5
> Expectations have changed, technology has changed

This I agree, nowadays people start with a lot already done, no need to write a custom audio codec, or image compression trick or whatever, not only there is plenty of code ready for doing so, but there are plenty of computational resources to use on runtime.

Back then you would see advances first in the games and later on being documented, now they are released as papers, you hope that it will be implemented on some engine somewhere, and games using these techniques will be at least 5 years away from the paper release.

trevormcneal··on Cyberpunk 2077 Update 1.5
apparently more budget, more advanced technology and team members a game has, crappier it gets.

90s games were simpler due to lot of restrictions, but most main stream titles were quite polished.

this company sure made several mistakes on the hiring process and team management, I just can't imagine how something like this went to production.

trevormcneal··on Acute aerobic exercise to recover from mental exhaustion
thank you for your answer, this was very informative, I got caught into the ME/CFS rabbit hole for a few days, sorry for the delay coming back to your comment. A lot of things make sense for my situation of feeling tired all the time, even with some breaks and regular off time I can easily go from well rested to feeling like crap.

I'm really grateful to have seen your comment and that you answered me, I will do some experiments and tests to asses my situation better and check if some of the solutions can help.

trevormcneal··on Tell HN: Airbnb just stole me 5 minutes of my time adding dices
Let's push the idiocracy to the extreme by asking Arkose to add a timeout to their captchas, so people have to solve it fast and make the default puzzle be a prime factorization.

Modern web become so unusable and poluted that I don't think that it can get worse.

trevormcneal··on Acute aerobic exercise to recover from mental exhaustion
can you explain what is ME/CFS and how you recovered ?
trevormcneal··on Pollution causing more deaths than Covid, action needed, U.N. expert says
and remember, is not a conspiracy theory if is writen by Klaus, it is a plan. if he is going to succeed or not, is another story, but he has clear plans about a different world which is greener than the actual. I can't blame him, he is so disconnected from reality that I trully believe that he has good intentions, but has no idea of the real impacts of his acts.

remember that people called the great reset a conspiracy theory, this is literally stated on WEF page, on Klaus books, and on his talks. And this is a key factor for a cleaner economy, since economical control at the individual level is required to create a more strict compliance mechanism.

trevormcneal··on Ask HN: How can I calculate my market value?
degree is required just as a filter for the HR, honestly this seems like a too little experience to be an architect, even in central or western europe, your salary should be above 100k€ for this position, even higher if you are in a smaller company, and even higher if you are the only architect.

your worth is how much they are willing to pay you to stay, which is directly correlated with how much cheaper they can get someone that does the same from the market + onboarding costs. For architects this plays a bigger role, since you need way more context to operate than someone just managing infra, so the onboarding costs are way higher.

Even if you are living in Italy, which has a very crappy salary, you should be earning more for this position. But what would raise as a red flag for you in a hiring process would be the experience VS position.

Easily you can get more salary if you step down to a Cloud Engineer/Systems Engineer/DevOps (I know, is a culture, but positions are labeled like this) or something similar.

Also try to work for banks, the fact that they trust you is a +50% that you can ask above the market average, handling systems that control few billions requires people that you trust, and at this scale 10k, 100k, or 250k, doens't make that much difference, but a small fckup may cost 100mi to the company. Closer to the money you are, more you get from it.

trevormcneal··on LogJ4 Security Inquiry – Response Required
well said, and these companies have way too many lawyers with free time to keep suing you, even if you are right and the judge solves the case in your favour, not always it is required to cover legal expenses and the amount of legal fees burned on it won't worth.

Fixed fee or monthly "support contract", with minimum of 1year.

trevormcneal··on LogJ4 Security Inquiry – Response Required
The first email looks like someone who had zero idea of what they were doing, just did some dependency scanning and got your name/email there, probably these emails were sent to everything that they could find.

Quite well handled, not arrogant, not bending over and doing whatever they say, but being honest.

If curl is impacted or not, may not really matters for them, usually these companies go after compliance and someone who they can blame when things go wrong.

trevormcneal··on How will the correction in the stock market impact startup fundraising?
most tech stocks still much better than they were 1 year ago... it is just a very very small correction, nothing really crashed and there is nothing to panic at all.

to avoid recency bias, take a look at history and I mean from 1910-2010, at this perspective, few weeks are barely visible.

trevormcneal··on Make Front End Shit Again (2018)
what this site got wrong is just "remember jquery ?", this was a modern thing back then and almost nobody used. Would make more sense "remember tables for everything ?"
