trevoristall··on Starling: The first real desktop written by AI
That was my immediate thought as well. "Ok, you built a desktop environment. Why? What can it do that can't be easily obtained elsewhere?"
trevoristall··on Ask HN: What are your best purchases under $100?
[EDJY](https://edjy.com/products/edjy-fingernail-cutter) nail trimmers have been awesome and I will probably only ever use that from now on
trevoristall··on "No way to prevent this" say users of only language where this regularly happens
I knew I recognized it from somewhere, thanks for the context
trevoristall··on Psychologists say they can't meet the growing demand for mental health care
it's already prohibitively expensive for most people since most insurance doesn't cover it. Doesn't really seem like a solution. Edit: in the US. Can't speak for other nations.
trevoristall··on Is it time to open source SublimeText?
[citation needed]
trevoristall··on FBI chief says TikTok 'screams' of US national security concerns
You're arguing in bad faith, the point is that limiting access to speech platforms is not in the interest of citizens and only serves the government.
trevoristall··on Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s deep fake company announces $20M investment
Wow that’s quite convincing!
trevoristall··on Most Education Is Wasteful and Immoral
> Unschooling works for some, mostly those who have a desire to self-direct. That's not everyone.

Definitely agree, I've also seen a non-zero number of parents using (home/un)schooling as an excuse to basically not parent their children and have intentionally disconnected from those communities

trevoristall··on Most Education Is Wasteful and Immoral
This is very similar to my own experience. Having the freedom to try things out and explore my interests at a young age had a large impact later, and gave me a real sense of personal direction that I see many of my peers lacking.

I do find many of the arguments in this article somewhat nonsensical, but this one in particular hits home.

trevoristall··on Apple Shutting Down Popular Weather App 'Dark Sky' Tomorrow
We did buy the app :)
trevoristall··on Show HN: Scripting language inspired by JavaScript and GLSL
Cool project, writing a lexer/parser/tokenizer for a simple language was an enjoyable and gratifying experience when I dabbled in the past. It's fun to learn about how those things work in such a hands-on way.
trevoristall··on Poll: Which IDE/text editor do you use?
Coming from a similar background I found that it was super helpful to create my own keybinds for stuff like navigating forward/backward through tabs, toggling the sidebar etc. Before I did that I felt similarly that it was too mouse dependent.

The VSCode Vim extension has a `gh` key sequence for showing the hover info you normally have to use the mouse for that made switching much easier.

trevoristall··on Joe Rogan Interviews Steve Jobs
This concept is explored in-depth in the Hyperion book series. Highly recommended if you like the genre :)
trevoristall··on Show HN: Depot – fast, remote Docker container builds
How does this compare to nixpacks? I've heard good things but admittedly haven't dug in too far yet.

trevoristall··on Email doesn't suck – it's email clients that need improving
I was under the impression JMAP was just a sync protocol and had nothing to do with js in email. Is that incorrect?
trevoristall··on Unity rejects AppLovin’s $17.5b takeover offer
Seems like great news if you work for Epic
trevoristall··on Ask HN: Is your company giving you a holiday for Juneteenth?
Yes, HubSpot
trevoristall··on Ask HN: How do you start your remote work day?
Oh no, This hits a little too close to home
trevoristall··on After the first tech job
Reading this was like holding up a mirror. I’m also 32 and recently realized i need to learn how to spend a healthy amount of time away from a screen.

Getting stuck in “career” mode consumed the majority of the last decade. Self taught is not an easy path, but my life is much better than it would have been had i continued what i was doing before getting into tech.

Now i just want to play an instrument and sit outside. :)

trevoristall··on Things I can’t do on macOS which I can do on Ubuntu (2020)
IIRC Spectacle is no longer maintained and is spiritually succeeded by https://rectangleapp.com
trevoristall··on Dell deletes Latitude CPU Throttling issue after link is posted here
Streisand effect in full swing
trevoristall··on Key senators have voted for the anti-encryption EARN IT act
I'm inclined to agree, though I feel they're already pretty hands-off for most things that don't have corporate interest or overreaching power driving them.
trevoristall··on Key senators have voted for the anti-encryption EARN IT act
> I really wish politicians would embrace a "we will make policies for things we can understand" motto.

I don't think they'd make many policies if that were the case

trevoristall··on Creating randomness Without Math.random
I just watched a really good video explaination of this the other day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sYawx70iP4
trevoristall··on Monolist: working hard to preserve the spirit of Inbox's organizational features
Needs Jira to be useful for me, very cool idea though!
trevoristall··on Why I dislike Modern UI
Complaining is easy. If you don't like how modern UI's work, do something about it instead of making more noise.
