trentthethief··on Ask HN: Buy a holiday house with a tight budget
And substantial crime rates.
trentthethief··on Ask HN: What Linux distro to install?
Debian all the way.
trentthethief··on The collapsing quality of dev.to (2021)
I will be downvoted for this, but the whole focus on marginalized people at the cost of everyone else, and not allowing any reverse-ism debates pretty much sums up the site.

A giant marginalized circle jerk.

trentthethief··on The collapsing quality of dev.to (2021)
I hate to say this but I feel like Dev had a nice start but went downhill fast.

Nearly all articles can be boiled down to “Look at this really basic thing, and follow me on A, B and C.

The first Dev talk I watched from the founder (Ben) was about how they gained a lot of traction being such a fast loading site, focus on content and less fluff. I loved the attention to performance, being open source and the customizations it enabled. Sounded great.

However the site got funding and started to focus on “diversity” and “inclusion” at all costs. Created a new CoC and the beginner content flooded in and has gone downhill since.

There is also a rampant spam issue and affiliate link farming.

trentthethief··on Ask HN: Do You Use RSS?
I use a terminal app called newsboat to subscribe to blogs and youtube channels.
trentthethief··on Show HN: Nerd Crawler – monitoring original comic art sites so you don't have to
This looks like RSS with text alerts…

Personally, I toss RSS feeds into newsboat and check it once a day. I want to get away from “always on alert” and take control of where and when I consume media.

trentthethief··on Ask HN: Options for Antivirus on Windows?
“Antivirus” software is the most lucrative malware to ever exist.
trentthethief··on Deno raises $21M
It is the lock in and potential feature gates that worry me. Also, it scares me developers will skill up in something that can disappear like the wind because the company didn’t hit their goals.
trentthethief··on GitHub Copilot is generally available
A whole new era of copy-paste programmers. You do not even have to look for code to copy anymore.
trentthethief··on Deno raises $21M
Serious question, how do investors plan on making a return on their investment? Where is the cash in this?
trentthethief··on Stop using app icons for political activism
I will likely be downvoted but I agree with the author. Not only for app icons but anywhere.

For example, if I am searching a programming language documentation site I do not need to see a political banner.

There is a time and place for political discussion and expression. It is not on my phone screen or sites meant to get things done.

trentthethief··on Mighty: The Browser You Didn’t Know You Needed but Definitely Do
I may be in my own here, but allowing 40 tabs to live indefinitely in my browser, executing javascript whenever they want makes me incredibly anxious.

I am a huge fan of Firefox with treestyle tabs and the auto tab suspend extension.

trentthethief··on Playstation confirms chain of 5 vulnerabilities on PS4/PS5
I found an open redirect in a large American insurance company’s website and was given $200. I imagine finding 100 low hanging vulnerabilities would be a lot easier for $20,000…
trentthethief··on Fyne, a cross-platform GUI toolkit written in Go
I really wanted to like it but the ui is very unappealing to me.
trentthethief··on Make Linux Fast Again
I have mitigations disabled on my laptop. I mainly work offline and only run trusted code. I also use noscript and only enable javascript on trusted sites. I also use auto tab suspend to stop javascript from running if I am not using the tab.

Realistically, there is very little threat to turning off the mitigations with enough precautions in place. Obviously not recommended on a vps or other shared servers etc.

trentthethief··on Ask HN: Is it the “worst” time to buy a house?
It is the best time to buy if you got a lot of cash.
trentthethief··on Silicon Valley braces for the good times to end
I am my own employer. I often hate myself but I have never considered firing myself.
trentthethief··on Ask HN: What do you automate in your workflow?
If you like customizing and automating things then you should look at linux.

My entire environment was hand crafted from the ground up, so I guess “everything” is my response.

trentthethief··on Gitea – a painless self-hosted Git service
Cgit is even more light weight and secure.
trentthethief··on Ask HN: How do you sync your computer’s development configurations/environment?
Set up your environment in a nix shell.
