treeform··on Nim 0.19
I thought so too about Nim, but then I realized how easy it is to call c libs from nim. There is infinate amount of c and c++ libs out there.
treeform··on Nim 0.19
I am switching all my work to him now. It's a super fast python with types. The non nil string and sequence in this version are cleaver.
treeform··on Nimbus, An Ethereum 2.0 Sharding Client
Nim is great. To me it feels like typed python that is fast.

It also runs everywhere. I use its C mode on the server, its js mode on the website, and even its c++ mode to interface with c++ libraries such as steamworks which are hard to interface with.

Nim is also pretty cool by offering templates and macros. Which allow you to make some awesome DSLs that make your code short and sweet. Just don't go too crazy!

I used to really hate typing in C or Java because it felt so boring. I stayed away from typed languages for a long time, but nim has won me back. Types have saved me many times now!

Its also super fast, I mostly programmed in JS/Python and I never knew how fast computers can be.

treeform··on Ask HN: Next programming language to learn: Nim vs. D?
I chose to learn nim coming from Python, because found C++ to be annoying and difficult. It feels like python but faster. I have compiled to to JS and integrated with complex C++ libraries. I like it so far. Metaprogramming is cool feature. Community is also really helpful.
treeform··on Apple introduces macOS Mojave
What do you think about them forcing you to use Swift or Objective-C for this? Forcing you to use languages that use ref counting and object oriented pointer tables that are traversed at runtime? How much of the gains does objc_msgSend eat up? I though you are against such things?

How ugly would the JAI code to need to be to interface with this?

I wish they had a simple Metal C API, but their new API comes with a bunch of Objective-C baggage.

treeform··on Writing a Fast JSON Parser
Where did he get that assembler output from? It uses "jump-if-less" and "load" instead of "jl" and "mov"? Is that a swift/llvm syntax?
treeform··on New Cities
Barcelona's block layout comes to mind: http://projectivecities.aaschool.ac.uk/portfolio/yuwei-wang-...
treeform··on On the Complexity and Performance of Parsing with Derivatives
In jai, did you write the parser yourself or used a parser generator like yacc? In my toy languages I find writing my own parser more fun and not hard. I find it harder to make yacc do things such as indentation significance.
treeform··on Minecraft sales top 100M
Majority of Minecraft comes from console/mobile. Minecraft mobile surpassed Minecraft desktop in 2013, with consoles doing same thing later. Most people don't play the original java version that has mods. Most people don't play with mods.

treeform··on Apply HN: 401L before 401K (Education loan)
This could be cool if the "401L" would have the proper tax incentives around it as well. I think there is very small tax incentive to repay student loans now. How does that work exactly?

Now if Employers add matching as a benefit that could be a cool perk. It seems like Employers stopped doing 401K matching lately. Did they stop and why?

treeform··on Apply HN: Visage – Fully Automated Makeup Application
This could be quite cool if technologically feasible, do you have a prototype or how far along is it?
treeform··on Apply HN: Grid – let the AI choose your date
Dating? Don't men and women tend to do different things? Won't men get paired with a small subset of woman who like doing manly things, and women with a small subset of men who likes doing womenly things?
treeform··on Apply HN: One Degree – Collaborative Intelligence
Sorry I don't understand what you are trying to do. Can you provide an example of how and what this would be used for?
treeform··on Show HN: Acme-tiny, a tiny 200-line Let's Encrypt client
I have just used this script and it worked great. I used the lets encrypt normal client and it felt very bloated for me: virtual env, docker, tons of dependences. I hope lets encrypt folks put their client on a diet.
treeform··on Refactoring a 300-line if
Yeah i felt the same way. I can't really tell how gnarly the if statement is, but interfaces, classes, zope, xml is way worse. Every one knows how if statements work, not so much with zope xml.
treeform··on Visualizing popular machine learning algorithms
Me too!
treeform··on Hack.chat – A minimal, distraction-free chat application
Its not working for me.
treeform··on Software Development on the Chromebook Pixel
Why run any programming software on the chrome book? You can always just ssh into a box and do your dev there? I have been using that for years (and the web code editor I wrote). I have used the first Pixel as on the go dev machine for years...
treeform··on The Wolfram Language Image Identification Project
I used the same image and it did not guess it at all. It said "oblate"...
treeform··on I Am Sam Altman, President of Y Combinator. AMA
We were in the same situation. But we were completely open with our YC founders and they helped us a lot in getting into YC and with tons of advice. It seems like you are building the relation ship wrong based on some sort of deception. I would think about it.
treeform··on Strengthening JavaScript
In the article they they are doing both. People from chrome team said they are doing asm.js.

"Q: How does SoundScript compare to asm.js? A: They have different goals: asm.js is a low-level language designed to be a compilation target for other (mostly low-level) languages. SoundScript is a user-facing type system for direct use of JavaScript as a high-level language. Both are complementary, both are useful, and V8 is committed to both."

treeform··on Peripheral vision in Quake
Also related, I learned a lot about peoples perception of FOV in fps games from this reddit thread: http://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/2yi4yx/blizzards_stan...
treeform··on How I Hacked Telegram’s “Encryption”
I am not even a security novice, but isn't getting root on the devices basically a game over? The suggestions the author hard to encrypt the stuff in memory and on disk would just add a extra step for the attacker to find the key? If they key had to be entered by the user every time the attack can just wait until the user does so? If thats too hard... just monitor the user. With root you can just wait and take screen shots... (as the author shows) which would work for any thing the user does ever and is simpler?
treeform··on Introducing node-firefox
Or some thing like node-js but using SpiderMonkey instead of V8. Name really does not fit and blows up expectations. node-firefox-simulator would be more apt.
treeform··on Mapped: The beaches where Lego washes up
Could it be conformation bias that maritime or nautical theme peaces are more noticed or make for a better article?
treeform··on Your best passive income? (2015 Edition)
So there is no arbitrage, no user to user interaction, they simply buy Steam Gift cards from you with bitcoins. So simple. Genius!

One can make a bitcoin front for pretty much anything online. Where else do you see opportunities like this?

treeform··on Amazon Echo
I mean their sentence on Echo's page. I totally got what you where saying.
treeform··on Amazon Echo
I had to read that line several times to make sure I was not missing some thing.
