Lowest friction is what I’m going for here. Thanks!
Tech stack is simple: Rails on DigitalOcean app platform. Everything is automated because why not :). It’s not the most efficient, but simple > profit margins.
The address parsing is also done via libpostal statistical NLP. Addresses need to be broken into components for all services that require an address (line 1, line 2, street, city, state, zip), but asking users for each of these is so much friction and sucks from a UX pov. It’s not perfect, but works well in the intended market right now.
As for the business, it’s 100% automated. Otherwise, it wouldn’t work at scale with everything else I have going on.
It’s also designed to simply be a fun thing for me and others to use, and isn’t really meant to be anything more than that, money wise. The price point, at the average use numbers, pretty much cover my costs. :)
I just wish I had this running when everyone was locked inside in 2020, I bet it would have been fun to use then!
For all we know, UBI could lead to solving some of the worlds biggest problems by giving people, who otherwise wouldn't be able to, the freedom to solve problems they're interested in, not just work some dead end job to barely make ends meet. You'd be surprised at how much better humans are at doing things when they actually like doing them.
Let's let the studies roll out before making assumptions. I do, however, believe these studies are much too removed from reality to prove much of anything. The dataset is much too small and 36 months isn't a great deal of time. We will see.
I know someone who made the list last year, and it's literally their only accomplishment. They spent so much time trying to look good on paper that they've yet to accomplish anything real in life.
Their resume _looks_ great though...
This was the sentence that most resonated with me.
I think about this almost every time I sit in bullshit traffic when I’m just trying to run to the grocery store.
I’m lucky in that the company I work for doesn’t care if I’m in office or remote, but I really wish more companies respected that mentality.
Backordr is focused 100% on registering a domain name for a user, and then we urge the user to transfer the domain name to their registrar as soon as they can. In addition, rather than public auctions, we use a silent auction system that’s both more fair, and keeps prices lower.
This market can be really shady, and I hope to eliminate the shadiness and simply provide a service that works well.
Please let me know what you think, and thanks for checking it out!
The census don’t, generally speaking, tend to believe statistics and facts. And the media will always spin a bad situation to boost their click through rates.
So, even though self driving cars may be 100% less prone to accidents (this is just an example), media headlines like “driver killed instantly when self driving car automatically steered into a wall without warning,” will cause the majority to push back and say they’re unsafe.
If you get a CS degree from a top school just because you see what salaries are, not because that’s what you’re interested in, your career will be mediocre at best.
School shouldn’t be looked at as mandatory and burdensome, it should be a tool that helps you achieve a level of understanding about something that you’re head over heels excited about.
Passion for something will organically lead to a successful career doing what you love.
My setup (tried and testing over the years), is one 27” high resolution display and Better Snap Tool. My laptop is in clamshell when connected, and BST allows me to use keyboard shortcuts to position my working windows. I have everything in one display.
Seems super scummy.
I'm not sure this qualifies as "shady" when everything is displayed within the same viewport.
But yeah, people will get something if they really want it.
Here’s the deal - it’s not a rights thing. It’s the fact that smoking cigarettes, no matter what, is a group act. You bring everyone within eyesight of you into your bad habit. There are plenty of other ways to get your nicotine fix, and we can still tax the shit out of it.
Nice going, Hawaii. I hope it actually happens.
Btw, Hawaii is one of the boldest states to consider this. I have a condo on the water there and I have to ask people to not smoke cigarettes under my deck on a daily basis. I wouldnt be surprised if there were a huge backlash to this suggestion.
The comparison of Tesla to other EV options just isn't fair. Tesla models were designed from the ground up as being electric from the start, but other options have been ICE cars transitioned to EV, which makes them less-than-ideal and they lack the low center of gravity and storage capacity a tesla has.
I really do struggle to see how other manufacturers will compete with Tesla. Tesla just does so many things right...
Needless to say I quit because my “reviews” were bs and I never used any of the products I wrote reviews for...so I have a tough time these days trusting any site like this.
This is a position I was in for my own company and I will never put myself in a position like that again.
I spent countless nights and 20 hour days writing code, rewriting code, deleting everything, starting over, integrating every fucking thing on the planet, removing those integrations, etc.
The non technical founders won’t have any sense of what it takes to do the random bs things they come up with while “at a lunch,” and will expect you to whip it up quick, oh and it’ll have to take precedence over that thing they asked you to whip up quick just yesterday.
When you finally decide you’ve had enough and things aren’t going anywhere and you leave for a super high paying job, they’ll turn around with claims that you never did anything and you really fucked them.
I know this might come off as harsh, but being the only technical person is a huge mistake. Try to get at least one more in there and REALLY push to set expectations. Be very transparent in exactly what it’ll take to do something. If you need to create a feature, let them know “sure I can do it. It’s not easy though. There are database migrations to write, the feature will need to be tied into our existing codebase. It’s currently X, but needs to be Y for this to work with it. Problems A, B, and C will probably arise and I’ll have to 1, 2, 3, ...200.”
Even then they’ll just be daydreaming about their next “important meeting” where they’re really just getting drunk at another lunch with someone and discussed the product in a few hushed tones before “shooting the shit.”
You are the backbone and the heart of this company. Don’t be afraid to speak up, and understand if you leave, they’re fucked. Don’t let them make you believe otherwise.
On top of this, we pretty much hand out drivers licenses like fucking flyers in this country. Just stand in line and earn yours.
If you’ve ever been on a road in Europe you’ll see a dramatically different scenario. Free flowing traffic, everyone seems to see everyone else around them; people are paying attention and know their cars.
The market for automated vehicles is ripe because we’re fucking morons behind the wheel, and somehow we’re ok with that.
