trashtensor··on Starving to Death on a Full Stomach
This post is really bringing out the classic HN mental block around changing the structures of our society
trashtensor··on The Wetware Crisis: The Dead Sea Effect (2008)
i wouldnt say i have any particularly groundbreaking insights. Get things done, don't be afraid to learn new things as you need to. The best people i work with at any given time are the ones who are willing to try stuff and fail (but they probably wont because it seems like half of succeeding is just trying). So many devs out there get stuck because they are comfortable in their lane and are unwilling to get adventurous.

in terms of optimizing for pay vs lifestyle, i spent some years optimizing for lifestyle but im definitely in optimize for pay mode right now. Make a bit of a bag and get out and go back to optimizing for lifestyle. Things are better that way.

trashtensor··on Welcome to the "neomedieval era": are states becoming obsolete?
> its framing of the world as an ideologically driven competition between democracy and autocracy

What an absurd, meaningless way to frame the current moment.

I've job hopped a lot over the years and now i make about 30x what i did at my first software job. Now I'm sticking around though despite some of the craziness that i'd prefer not to deal with mostly just to prove to myself i can stick around at a job for more than 2 years.
trashtensor··on Ash HN: Should early career SDEs focus on getting into FAANG+ or work startups?
Early stage startups are going to be a crapshoot and can take a number of years (maybe even 10) to pay off, if they do. I have no experience with late stage startups so maybe someone else can chime in. FAANG pays a high salary and RSUs so in terms of seeing your bank account grow over time I would say FAANG > early stage startup. As I said unclear about later stage where the path to IPO or big acquisition is clearer.
trashtensor··on How much bigger could Earth be before rockets wouldn't work?
I mean I made the comment because the field is there when submitting the post, I didn't realize it was going to end up as an independent comment. Maybe the HN devs need to make it clearer what will happen if you fill out that field when a link is provided.
trashtensor··on How much bigger could Earth be before rockets wouldn't work?
Honestly the whole thing - this is a topic I don't know very much about and the question and answers were fascinating to read.

The post about the 1.55R⊕ planet made me curious and I thought this was an interesting discussion
trashtensor··on Satellites Are Becoming the New Cellphone Towers
Makes sense, thanks.
trashtensor··on Satellites Are Becoming the New Cellphone Towers
I really don't understand the first paragraph,

> Researchers in Switzerland have transmitted and received optical data at rates of more than 10 Tbit/s between an Alpine peak and an observatory at the University of Bern – a distance of 53 kilometres. This is more than five times further than would be needed to set up a satellite-to-ground communication link

Google says Starlink satellites are 550km in altitude... Is this to do with turbulence below 10km?

trashtensor··on Pipeline-Oriented Programming [video]
There are some things it's useful for and some things it isn't. Go figure.
trashtensor··on Ambient Co-Presence
Yeah I was thinking the same thing as reading this article.
