traeblain··on Throw Out Your Resume
Agreed, and this bugs me about many of these things. The site should be developers-throw-out-your-resume.com

I'm a mechanical engineer, I know all my possible employers would love to see what I have on Github... yes that's absurd. Sometimes I fear these people live in a bubble all their own and have idea there are other professions our there that people might want to work in.

traeblain··on The B&N fallacy
I feel like I stumbled into a stuffy country club to find this guy sitting cross-legged in a leather chair with a monocle and a cigar. After a long diatribe about how he wouldn't be caught dead in my jeans and t-shirt attire, he decides to relate his feelings on B&N.

The smugness is palpable, although I'm catching some points and have issues with others, I'm not allowed to speak until he's said his peace. At one point, I'm told that since I didn't ask a question when he mention "value network", I'm immediately told I know nothing about it and therefore required to listen to him site a book I've already read.

Finally when it is all over and done, when I finally have a moment to parlay my rebuttal, I let him know he's missing a number of points and confusing some issues. But instead of listening and countering, he waves his hand and stamps out his cigar. And as he walks away mutters "Arsehole" in that under-your-breath manner that is still loud and obviously intended for you to hear.

As I turn back, I see that a card has been placed on my chair. It informs me who this monocled figure was that felt the need to not simply inform, but belittle me and my opinions. Then on the back is inscribed, "But of course you already knew who I was..."

Although, it's true I don't fully subscribe to his points. The way this piece was written made me feel I wasn't allowed to have a dissenting thought. It's like he went out of his way to deny you your critical thinking, and therefore difficult to take seriously. Just my couple cents...

traeblain··on Static site generation on python
Love Pelican. Found it to be simplest "blog aware" generator for Python I could find. Because it keeps maturing, there's a ton of stuff you can do with it. But simply propping it up and starting a site, was amazingly easy.

`pelican-quickstart` and you are up and running.

traeblain··on Disqus bait and switch, now with ads
I don't know why you keep calling this stealthy or a bait and switch, I've received emails on this. Also at one point, Disqus was showing me that I was not using the latest "theme/style" and that I should upgrade. And in doing so, it would enable features such as recommended and related content.

Everything I did last year fulfills the requirements of 'opt-in'. I could have left the old style and never received the new features.

Based on my experience with this exact feature, I think the OP mis-read/didn't read the information provided by Disqus.

traeblain··on Show HN: Your personal Hacker News reader - Skim HN
Don't need to worry about logins. Nothing is stored here. Best thing to do is to create a custom URL that will always bring the same lists.

i.e. When I setup my personalized options, I have:

http://www.skimhn.com/djWH3hS5

That way you don't have to operate with logins and everyone's setup is share-able. (Then you can look in the future of letting the creator define the url.)

This is great!!
traeblain··on Why you should never use two spaces after a period
Agreed that his arguments don't direct my practice. I have to agree with Steve Losh in that all the tools for publishing now days correct for this. And it makes the source material easier to read and parse.

Why then does he destroy his argument at the end by rallying his claim on the subjectivity of ugliness. To this day I still find the double space prettier and find print that use it easier to read. 3. is too much of an opinion to claim sound reason.

I agree, the quote:

> It was an untenable proposal for our people

I figure unemployment would be untenable.

After spending the past 6-8 months hearing about jobs from the election coverage, stuff like this just bugs me.
