Its good enough to replace most stock music, or a jingle in a commercial or a quick musical hit at the beginning of a video or show. Also if you combine a knowledgeable producer with AI they can use it to make more things faster which puts pressure on supply and prices out smaller producers.
True art yeah, and people are rebelling a bit on entertainment (I don't think that will last once you can't tell). But already crushing the commercial art jobs that supported a lot of people while they did their unprofitable real art.
I feel like it's kind of misleading to say "earth is tearing its self apart" when talking about a subduction zone. Yeah I mean the subducting plate faulting as its pulled down is breaking.. but its still a compressive collision. If you crammed two things together and one of the things cracked, saying its tearing its self apart would be a real.. stretch.
People enjoy a lot of the jobs in the cognitive economy though. They are fulfilling. Coding and making art and media is a passion for a lot of people, the actual act, not just the outcome. So unless people were passionate about doing back breaking farm labor its not the same thing. I'm mostly embracing AI because of what it lets me explore and learn beyond what I could before, but I'm not convinced the outcome is going to be a better world at this point.
Yeah its a bait and switch. People want the social credit, early adoption, and community embrace of being open source, but they also want a captive business model.
The UN is not a body that would be involved in banning models from a specific country, and even if they were China is one of 5 members with permanent veto power.
Being "a profit obsessed psycho" might help some people rise to positions of power, but I think the stronger point is that a corporation is an emergent superorganism with its own identity above the individual human level, without a psychology, that operates on its own principles of self preservation based on the incentives of the environment it operates in and that individual choices result in a gestalt of behaviors that no one person really has full control over even though they are part of it and what they do does affect the overall outcome, like a cell and organs making up an animal.
All this attitude does is tear down the only viable income source for independent publishers and demonizes them for trying to make money, while everyone let's huge corporations off the hook for it because "well that's just what they do"
That always felt like a deus ex machina answer to me too. We don't know exactly how abiogenesis happened on earth so some people just like to cut off the chain of causation with the idea of, "it was seeded"... but then how did abiogenesis happen elsewhere?
I don't think that's a very popular theory among anyone who knows what they're talking about though.
The leaked advertising pitch videos from them where they say "we own the glass" as a pitch to potential advertising partners, about a tv they sold me just viscerally pissed me off so I'm kind of just done with them even if thats an irrationally strong response. The whole attitude just makes me so mad.
I honestly think the founder of a project can do whatever they want and they don't have any obligation to anyone except maybe their co-founders and early major contributors (and in his case as a CEO his employees and investors). If its too annoying for you don't use or contribute to wordpress. Is it a strategic blunder to pressure a competitor using his project if it harms users, I mean it seems like it was? But im not taking sides with a hosting provider competing with the founder under almost any conditions related to their business choices, or forming some kind of personal opinion on the person based on it.
The Spanish were colonizing the land that is now the United States for 100 years before the English even got here and the french were colonizing it for 100 years before the Louisiana purchase. The catholic church/Jesuits also ran a lot of the infamous indian boarding schools of the 1800s and early to mid 1900s though not exclusively.
What is your relationship to this team? Their manager? A senior colleague? Something about this sounds like a failure of communication or leadership. Why are you stand offish from them? Why are you treating them like children? If they don't know what they're doing why did you hire them? Now that you did why are you treating them like a burden and not an opportunity to mentor, teach, and uplift?
I just think its a meaningless dismissive term. It literally does predict the next token. But it ignores that it coherently predicts long continuous sequences of those tokens, that tokens can be anything, and you can do almost literally anything with that capability if it does it well enough.
This is what I mourn the most too. The collaborative teaching and mentoring relationships. Not just for front end. Covid and now AI has just obliterated the software meetup and teaching space.
You can write a good story about anything. Slice of life stories are great. A peaceful zen character can be a main character. A hard working craftman could be a main character. A man or woman taking care of their sick partner or child and barely having time for anything else is a main character. The whole trend of using the term NPC is a very egotistical framing in the first place, but if you care you can be living any type of lifestyle and be a main character. Culture is very relative, people think they're the main character because they act like a dip shit on a live stream and people watch them. In a lot of cultures people like that would not be seen as enviable at all. Its all pretty arbitrary.
A great philosophy for anyone who is pretending to know what they're doing that will still result in the plane crashing because you need to know how to fly a plane to fly a plane, and you need to know how to run a business to run a business.
This is a very narrow viewpoint, considering the majority of computing is done on touch screens now. Sometimes keyboard controls are critical, sometimes they're not, sometimes your users don't care, sometimes they do. Sometimes a pointer is a better human interface for something, sometimes a purpose built controller is, sometimes a multi touch sensitive touchpad is. I wouldn't make an FPS that was just keyboard controls and the same is true of some other types of UIs. Just measure it and be creative and empathetic to how people will use your product who aren't like you and consider the physical interactions as a part of your design space and not just the software.
There have been plenty of times in history (almost all times) that physically weaker men have secured the loyalty of soldiers with wealth and influence during periods where strong centralized civic authorities did not exist.
You can still write a simple OS on a modern computer, a lot of times its done using a virtual machine though to make iteration faster. It's not like rewriting linux or something, its just standing up the basics of machine abstraction.
