tr_user··on Being “rockstars”: when software was a talents/creatives industry
Are you measuring only functional requirements? Plenty of people can code it up, but who can maintain it afterwards?
tr_user··on [dead]
There are scientists who support flat earthers. Are they part of the scientific consensus? This "article" is clearly intended to push a certain narrative and if they bothered to even ask another scientist, there might be more credibility. The article only mentions that the reports weren't peer reviewed to paint her as some sort of victim who's being ignored. The wikipedia article does a lot more to present her views in context.

tr_user··on It could cost $21B to clean up California’s oil sites, study finds
Who chooses who to bear the negative externalities. Seems like if you're the one who's drilling, you should not be immune to the consequences of the pollution. But again, the ones least well positioned to deal with the pollution are the ones who have to suffer it.
tr_user··on Congress wants AM radio in all new cars – trade groups say that’s a mistake
why's that a car problem? Give everyone $20 and they can buy a radio with batteries.
tr_user··on Timnit Gebru on her sacking by Google, AI’s dangers and big tech’s biases
there's lots of systems. you don't have to fight them all at the same time.
tr_user··on Timnit Gebru on her sacking by Google, AI’s dangers and big tech’s biases
They mean to say patriarchy and white supremacy. The fight is against the system. I don't know why so many people don't use better terminology that doesn't exclude allies.
tr_user··on Tech companies are finally firing tech workers
Article cites the twitter layoffs as setting the example that companies can be leaner, but I'm not sure why this journalist didn't ask if it's a good example or a bad one. From the tech side, seems like twitter's reliability problem is a big red flag for why you shouldn't do it.
tr_user··on A Forty-Year Career (2019)
Seems like you're going to have to fight for that kind of society where having a middle class life affords you free time.
tr_user··on Toyota plug-in hybrids to offer 124-mile electric-only range
You live on the same planet. If you want to spite the EV fan, go punch one. Why spite the rest of us?
tr_user··on Super-rich abandoning Norway at record rate as wealth tax rises slightly
what makes you think the money is already taxed? People are increasingly against inheritance taxes and the biggest predictor of whether someone is rich is whether their parents are rich
tr_user··on Super-rich abandoning Norway at record rate as wealth tax rises slightly
100%, I keep seeing this argument being trotted out like every country should have a race to the bottom to keep billionaires within their borders whatever that means.
tr_user··on Pause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter
You're saying they can't make one now. The question is what are we doing before that happens because if you're only thinking about acting when it's viable we're all probably already dead.
tr_user··on Pause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter
I think you're very wrong about this. I think this is similar to gun control laws. A lot of people may have murderous rage but maybe the extent of it is they get into a fist fight or at most clumsily swing a knife. Imagine how safe you'd feel if everyone in the world was given access to a nuke.
tr_user··on South Korea has the lowest fertility rate, with lessons for us all
That's great, we should all stop having children so everyone can be richer. Maybe the last person on earth would reconsider if they want to split their wealth with anyone or if they want to die as the richest of all time.
tr_user··on [dead]
Makes me think of the Ford Nucleon. Either people at the time didn't care about radiation poisoning or there was enough optimism and hope that nuclear fission was not automatically conflated with war.

The zeitgeist of our time is one where faith in pure capitalism is declining and I don't blame people for being leery of how AI might be used against them.

tr_user··on U.S. moves to seize $460M Robinhood stake linked to Sam Bankman-Fried
If Elon was not rich and he did the same things you'd call him dumb. Why are we pretending someone who impulsively decided they'd buy twitter without due diligence "not stupid"?
tr_user··on U.S. moves to seize $460M Robinhood stake linked to Sam Bankman-Fried
Some would argue that being regulated gives credibility and the better thing is no regulation beyond Buyer Beware.
tr_user··on Last Pass Hacked
No passwords stolen
tr_user··on Us crosses the electric-car tipping point for mass adoption
That sounds like a Texas underinvesting in the grid problem
tr_user··on The Software Industry Is Still the Problem
We might if people paid for it.
tr_user··on The Software Industry Is Still the Problem
Except machine gun fire is consistent. Say you were to plan against guerilla warfare with various arms and various tactics that evolve each year because there's an arms marketplace. Could you?

How often do the people who pay for the software plan for that in their budgeting? Supposed I were to say this software has been pentested before release and it'll cost this much extra. How many people are paying for that? How many people will pay for it to be pentested each year for new vulnerabilities?

tr_user··on Shell profits nearly triple as oil prices surge
I mean the simplest explanation is that there's a price fixing cartel where everyone benefits by not trying to undercut each other.
tr_user··on Ask HN: What tech companies/industries will do well in a recession?
They're already losing billions each year. You want them to lose more?
tr_user··on California's Vanished Dream, by the Numbers
Do they own valuable homes or do they own valuable land? I can see the land value increasing because it is now rezone-able and you can build multiple units worth on it.
tr_user··on Is my advice too mercenary?
> 2) Success as as a business owner requires steady economic activity where people get what they want. Success as a noble ruling a fiefdom requires kneecapping anyone who challenges your god-given right to rule.

take out lobbying and id agree

tr_user··on Trump-backed Truth Social tops Apple's app store charts
It'll be yet another way to funnel money into the Trump organization. Ever wonder why politicians buy their own books?

Poor whites don't commit more crimes?

tr_user··on ‘Extraordinary’ hacking powers pass Australian Parliament
You assume there won't be a variant for next year. IMO covid is going to be like the flu.
