tppiotrowski··on The Cornell University Witchcraft Collection
You're right but I think there are those who believe and the charlatans who take advantage of them. It's hard to reason with the mob once it's co-opted by someone who feeds into their beliefs.

I think the people in charge used it to their advantage while harnessing the religious masses to enforce their agenda.

tppiotrowski··on The Cornell University Witchcraft Collection
Carl Sagan did a great job describing the witch trial phenomenon in "The Demon Haunted World". It discusses how unchecked beliefs without any evidence can wreak havoc on society. If you were accused of witchcraft your only choices were:

1. to deny it and be burned at the stake

2. admit it, implicate others and be put to death in a gentler way

I admire the ones who stood for reason and were brave enough to endure the consequences.

tppiotrowski··on Fed hikes rates by 0.25 point despite recent turmoil in the banking sector
I think there's an element of educating the younger generation to invest. If you can bring in more investors than are leaving, supply and demand will ensure that prices will keep increasing.
tppiotrowski··on Fed hikes rates by 0.25 point despite recent turmoil in the banking sector
Freedom. Having money in the bank allows you to control your circumstances. It gives you time to wait for and consider multiple job opportunities. It gives you time to re-skill if the economy shifts or move if your region undergoes an economic depression.
tppiotrowski··on Fed hikes rates by 0.25 point despite recent turmoil in the banking sector
I disagree. Money buys you recognition, influence and power. There is no fixed price for these. It's an auction where the rewards go to the highest bidder.
tppiotrowski··on Fed hikes rates by 0.25 point despite recent turmoil in the banking sector
I agree with this take. Being a builder does not generate predictable returns like an index fund or the S&P over the last 100 years. They tell you in school that you should invest money early and watch it accrue, but if we all do that collectively as a society then who is going to build.
tppiotrowski··on Stanford’s Alpaca shows that OpenAI may have a problem
Everything you claim makes sense but so would aliens or that we're inside a computer game, etc. Inventing explanations to facts is a trivial skill. Formulating a theory that can predict future events is an actual achievement.
tppiotrowski··on OpenAI CEO warns that GPT-4 could be misused for nefarious purposes
Any new technology has some benefits and some drawbacks.

Electric cars have no direct emissions but increase mining operations in certain parts of the world. Or they can be used to plow through a public gathering of people. Or with some rewiring to electrocute someone to death. If you think hard enough, you can find nefarious purposes for almost any household item that's made your life easier.

I think what's important to focus on are the "net" benefits but the outliers feed into our emotional response.

tppiotrowski··on Ask HN: What has your personal website/blog done for you?
When I run into a problem I need to solve, I will document it on my blog and hope Google will surface it to others having a similar issue. I also like to document my backpacking and climbing trips. There's no real theme. I write for fun and there's no contact information so it's never led to a job or anything like that.

Doing OSS on Github or Tweeting leads to more business opportunities in my mind.

tppiotrowski··on Project Orion
There is also a book called Project Orion: The True Story of the Atomic Spaceship. It's still sitting on my shelf, but I don't remember it being a particularly inspiring read because it was tailored towards interstellar travel when we hadn't even reached Mars yet.
tppiotrowski··on Just setting up my mztdn
My guess is that Mozilla is running their own Mastodon instance. Would be great news, as personally, the one Mastodon server I tried shut down two weeks later (not sure if that's common or it was bad luck)
tppiotrowski··on SVB shows that there are few libertarians in a financial foxhole
I don't know much about finance and have never worked in banking but anyone more than 40 years old should know that fed rates can go into double digits. It's not like a black swan. It's happened before so I'm a bit surprised people are so shocked by the feds moves.
tppiotrowski··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
Crypto undergoes hard-forks when "special" circumstances arise. It's not immune to unpredictable events.
tppiotrowski··on Bill Ackman: The gov't has about 48h to fix a-soon-to-be-irreversible mistake
Curious about the logic you used to determine a company's balance based on employee pay. Is this just your own number fidgeting or an actual best practice in finance?

It seems weird that a company paying someone less than $5K a month would need $250K in the bank. we had $100K seed check at my startup and I got paid $6K per month as a counter example.

tppiotrowski··on Bill Ackman: The gov't has about 48h to fix a-soon-to-be-irreversible mistake
> consider the feasibility of a world where each depositor must do their own credit assessment of the bank they choose to bank with

Isn't this exactly the problem the FDIC solves? Nobody with less than $250K need worry about who they bank with if they see the FDIC logo.

tppiotrowski··on Bill Ackman: The gov't has about 48h to fix a-soon-to-be-irreversible mistake
Why would anyone with less than $250K pull out their deposits? Seems like these "bank runs" only make sense for individuals worth more than $250K to get their "uninsured" money out.
tppiotrowski··on The Camera-Shy Hoodie
I believe the iPhone front facing camera can pick up infrared wavelengths so you can use it in the dark to pick up any IR illumination.

Point it at the front of your TV remote control and press a button to see it in action.

tppiotrowski··on WebGL2 Fundamentals
This was my main source of tutorials when learning WebGL. It's hosted on GitHub and you can submit corrections as PRs which is great. There is also webglfundamentals for webgl1 and webgpufundamentals by the same author, I believe.
tppiotrowski··on Most young men are single. Most young women are not
The article explains this. They are either dating each other or dating older men.
tppiotrowski··on Forget Milk and Eggs: Supermarkets Are Having a Fire Sale on Data About You
> Location: Your precise physical location in the store (with your consent), including when you enter and leave a store (Kroger app, GPS, and Bluetooth beacons inside stores)

Can someone comment on how a store can identify my Bluetooth address if I never pair with anything in the store? Do apps have access to the Bluetooth MAC? If the app is not running, can the store still identify you using Bluetooth? Is there some advertising database that contains MAC addresses tied to identities?

If you're on the store Wifi and open the app, I'm guessing the store can record the MAC address and look for it even if you're not connected but scanning.

tppiotrowski··on Crypto exchange Kraken to shut staking service, pay $30M fine in SEC settlement
I was referring to something like ATOM. BTC has a limited supply so it won't inflate past a certain period, but ATOMs inflate each year and if you're not staking them, you are effectively becoming poorer year to year.
tppiotrowski··on Crypto exchange Kraken to shut staking service, pay $30M fine in SEC settlement
Right. Some people in crypto will be baffled that eternal inflation is a built-in feature of some cryptocurrencies since one of the motivators of Bitcoin was to stop inflation caused by the fed printing money at will.
tppiotrowski··on Yahoo to lay off 20% of staff by year end, beginning this week
I'm reminded every time I email my mom.
tppiotrowski··on DIY 1,500W solar power electric bike (2022)
The Lightyear One [1] is supposed to be a solar powered car but I think it misses an important distinction. Cars spend a lot of time parked and during this time they can unfold a large capacity of solar panels like petals of a flower (similar to how spacecraft deploy once they leave the fairing). You can cover the windshield and all the other windows, for example.

Instead, the Lightyear One has focused on streamlining the solar panels in an aerodynamic way that doesn't take advantage of extra power when parked.

tppiotrowski··on Ask HN: How do you add novelty to your days?
Become a digital nomad and move around every couple of weeks.
tppiotrowski··on Project Sunroof
My hunch is that they require LiDAR data for the estimate and LiDAR data is currently collected one municipality at a time and stored in many different places. It's a data fragmentation problem.

In comparison, ground elevation data (omitting buildings and trees) can be collected using radar from orbit. That's why we have consistent and widely available elevation data like SRTM for the entire planet.

tppiotrowski··on Project Sunroof
They say they account for trees when calculating usable roof area but I can't find if they account for building shading in the total hours of sunlight.

I've been working on a tangential project [1] for helping people find sunny areas anywhere in the world based on topography and building data and must say that Google trove of LiDAR data is amazing. Does anyone know if it's accessible to developers?

tppiotrowski··on Quirks of the Page Visibility API
It might make sense to detect page visibility prior to loading a pay-per-load API like Mapbox GL JS, Apple Maps on Web, etc.

The scenario I imagine is:

1. Your map is loaded

2. User opens a new tab (your map is now in a background tab)

3. User restarts browser and existing tabs are loaded

4. You get charged for an API load even though the page is not visible

Does anyone know if this is the case?

Edit: also analytics. If you don't load your GA until page is visible, I wonder what impact that has on your visitor numbers

tppiotrowski··on ChatGPT Plus
You own that monitor. Would you pay $20/month to rent that monitor with the potential for price increases and ads popping up on it occasionally?

There's something to "owning" a thing. You can resell it and rent it out, etc. It's an asset. SaaS is not an asset. It's a service.

tppiotrowski··on Why EVs Aren't a Climate Change Panacea
Anytime I see the word "assume" in an article it feels like a mechanism for subtly turning journalism into an op-ed.
