tpl··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
What do you mean it doesn't play well with docker?
tpl··on Tell HN: Azure outage
Part of this outage involves outlook hanging and then blaming random addins. Pretty terrible practice by Microsoft to blame random vendors for their own outage.
tpl··on Rise in 'alert fatigue' risks phone users disabling news notifications
Apple should have never relaxed the guidelines they had.
tpl··on DolphinGemma: How Google AI is helping decode dolphin communication
The experiment design sounds pretty cool. I hope they see some cool results. It would be very cool if humans could talk to another intelligent creature here on earth. This is certainly a step on the way there.
tpl··on Sony announces PS5 Pro, a $700 graphics workhorse available Nov. 7
I use mine all the time to watch movies.
tpl··on Boeing to plead guilty to criminal fraud charge stemming from 737 MAX crashes
Not enough. Boeing getting off easy once again, not enough sting to produce a change in behavior. Why executives are not held accountable is confusing to me.
tpl··on China’s Moon atlas is the most detailed ever made
Hopefully all this moon activity stays peaceful. What a complete failure combat on the moon would represent. Very interested in the Chinese mission to the South Pole of the Moon. Hopefully they find usable water.
tpl··on Databases and why their complexity is now unnecessary
What sort of cost increase can I expect using something like this?
tpl··on Aerial refuelling without human intervention
Yes, Just one of the many issues Boeing is eating the cost overruns for.
tpl··on Bevy 0.12
Bevy is a lot of fun to play with and least the versions I toyed around with had pretty good docs too.
tpl··on CT scans of coffee-making equipment
They picked boring things to look at unfortunately. Not a lot going on in Moka pot that you can't grok just by looking at and taking it apart. Throwing a whole all-in-one countertop machine might be cooler.
tpl··on San Francisco fire chief fed up with robotaxis that mess with her firetrucks
Why are the people operating the trucks not getting ticketed for all this then? These various programs should be accruing points on their license just like a real driver. Cruise would probably be off the road if they did this though.
tpl··on Yann LeCun and Andrew Ng: Why the 6-Month AI Pause Is a Bad Idea [video]
It doesn't matter that its a bad idea. It's not implementable as policy.
tpl··on GitHub to lay off 10% and close all offices
Too bad, That SF Office was an excellent spot to visit for various meetups.
tpl··on ChatGPT is a ‘code red’ for Google’s search business
Right now YouTube is pushing Shorts pretty heavily. Everything I have heard from creators is that Shorts can drive a ton of subscriptions into your channel. How many of those viewers watch the long form stuff is a bit more a mystery though.
tpl··on Tell HN: Doing a chargeback against Google will get your account banned
This is more common than people know I think. Issuing chargeback is a great way to get dropped as a customer.
tpl··on Air Force, FBI raid homes in probe of Area 51 website
Then they should guard you while you get dressed. The risk of getting shot is rather low for most cases and people deserve dignity. They are only accused of a crime not guilty.
tpl··on Kim Jung Gi has died
Absolute master with a brush pen. A great loss for sure.
tpl··on The last person standing in the floppy disk business
Very happy to have not had to deal with a floppy that was done being able to be read in a very long time. I used to work at a campus computer lab and we would experience failures commonly while imaging machines. I do miss floppys but I am happy to see the extent that they are no longer critical.
tpl··on AWS us-east-2 outage
Personally only saw intermittent failures through out. Rather minor production as far as AWS outages go.
tpl··on Eating meat is good, says the philosopher
Just planting row crops results in much more cruel death than most people realize I think.
tpl··on Amazon admits giving police Ring camera footage without consent
Depending on where you live you might have recourse since they are recording audio.I would look into wiretapping laws for your state.
tpl··on Meta Accounts: A New Login for VR
Misleading title. Going from requiring a Facebook account to a Meta Account is a very minor move.
tpl··on Google Interview Warmup
Are Firefox users not welcome to interview?
tpl··on Mechanical Watch
Love the diagrams. Great write up!
tpl··on Why isn’t there a decent file format for tabular data?
Parquet is the answer, human readable is not a valid requirement for tabular data anyway. If you absolute must be human readable CSV is good enough.
tpl··on Etsy Strike
Honestly all the resellers on the site have driven me away from using it completely. Etsy would be wise to listen to these people at least for that part of their site experience.
tpl··on Google Drive users stung by macOS '.DS_Store' copyright infringement issue
People on the drive team should feel great shame for this. Catching a Google ban can be very very damaging to someone's life. Scans of files like this don't need to happen.
tpl··on Framework Laptop with Ubuntu Review
My has been a dream with NixOS on it. A great dev laptop really. The Intel GPU is enough to play around with graphics programming too.
tpl··on New credit card rules in India: recurring card payments to be affected
Am I wrong to say that it's not fair to say they banned all forms of recurring charges? I thought that most of the new regs were around informing the person about to be charged that it is coming and better handling for making the charges stop.
