towaway1138··on Peak California
Basically true, but I'm happy enough to let the market solve this one. California will change or it will fail.

The one thing that should perhaps be legislated is some up-front disclosure in employment offers of typical costs of living in the BA. Many prospective employees from elsewhere will not quickly realize that (absurd as it seems) you can't raise a family there on $200K/y.

towaway1138··on Ask HN: Why do we have to comment each commit?
Interesting. In general this seems good, but sometimes I really do want my final submission not to be squished, e.g., because it consists of several distinct stages and is easier to understand that way.
towaway1138··on How to prepare yourself for a good end of life
"Hospice nurses often list five emotional tasks for the end of life: thank you, I love you, please forgive me, I forgive you, and goodbye."

That's a pretty good list. Some of us might also add, "See you in Hell", but that's just me.

towaway1138··on EU's Tajani says Brexit date can be delayed few weeks at most: report
Having been through a long and very ugly divorce myself, my advice is to just rip the band-aid off and crash out as soon as possible. Yeah, it's going to be terrible, but nothing can stop that now. And the anticipation is worse than the actual new normal.
towaway1138··on [dead]
I grew up in a very conservative part of the Bible belt in the 70s and 80s. Turns out that was great training for dealing with today's Progressives. Keep your mouth shut and trust no one.
towaway1138··on Porfiry: A beautiful, interactive deconstruction of the Mueller investigation
Useless.

There's no indication of what the points are, nor what the connections mean, nor can any real person take the time to sweep through hundreds of points to try to get a sense of what this graph even looks like.

towaway1138··on Our Culture of Contempt
I guess. How many political murders are there in the US each year, though?
towaway1138··on The Case for Reparations
Meh. The idea of original or inherited sin is obnoxious, and ultimately unethical. We're here now, it is what it is--it's day one. How shall we proceed?

I'm white. I grew up in a very liberal household and have never had an unkind word for a black person. Nonetheless, I've been spit on by blacks several times, and otherwise suffered a considerable amount of personal abuse from them, some of which might have gotten me killed had I been less lucky. My response, ultimately, was to simply let it pass. And I think this is really the only answer to this--just let it go.

towaway1138··on Why Self-Checkout Is and Has Always Been the Worst
Maddeningly, this article wanders around without really making the key points. The self-checkout experience could be done reasonably well, but hasn't been. Why? The article doesn't talk about it.

Yes, companies want to cut costs, but there's nothing wrong with that. It is true, though, that there needs to be something in it for the user, or else why bother? So, for example, how about a 5% discount for self-checking?

I've noticed also that huge kiosk rollout at McDonald's has apparently failed. They're not as bad as grocery self-checks, but they're not good. And few people are using them. Who thought this was going to work?

towaway1138··on Social networks, gender, and job placement
Most of the abstract seems to be saying that unlike men, women can form tight cliques with other women, which gives them an advantage (the 2.5x boost) apparently unavailable to men.

But they also end with "Women who have networks that resemble those of high-placing men are low-placing, despite having leadership qualifications comparable to high-placing women." As they don't otherwise mention leadership qualifications, nor even define the term, it's unclear what's being hinted at here.

towaway1138··on Man and man's best friend have both been experiencing declines in sperm quality
Maybe it's for the best.
towaway1138··on Ask HN: Why do we have to comment each commit?
There's nothing wrong with producing a series of personal commits with little or no comment, and then squashing them into fewer or a single commit before merging.

But it's very important that the final product have a good comment. What was changed and why? We need to know.

towaway1138··on Our Culture of Contempt
I'd chalk Pittsburgh up to mental illness rather than politics.

The Cato study is interesting, but unfortunately covers a period of decades. I was referring to the last couple of years or so, which unfortunately this does not break out.

towaway1138··on Our Culture of Contempt
> Mental illness doesn't cause violence.

??? Reality begs to differ...

Upvote for the links.

Yeah, I've been following the Portland thing a bit. To my eyes, it seems a bit like frenemy sport between PP (kind of full of themselves) and antifa (wannabe fascists without the martial skills).

If this is the extreme of right-wing violence in the US at present, well, wake me if something interesting happens.

Seems pretty minor compared to that prof that tried to murder someone with a bike lock (for example): https://www.foxnews.com/us/felony-charges-filed-against-alle...

And don't miss antifa hating on senior citizens: https://www.foxnews.com/us/portland-antifa-protesters-caught...

towaway1138··on The Phantom Gambler
There's no real lesson, but that's a great story.
towaway1138··on We Are Not Living In A Simulation. Probably.
People who think they've found a way to contradict the simulation hypothesis remind me of breathless gamblers who are sure they've figured out a system to beat the house. It's simply impossible--the simulation hypothesis is not falsifiable even in principle, so no, you haven't found a way to falsify it. If you think you have, you've failed to understand the possibilities.
towaway1138··on Our Culture of Contempt
> the uptick in politically motivated violence on the right

I haven't looked closely, but it seems like the preponderance of such violence has been coming from the left these days (ignoring people with obvious mental health problems). Charlottesville is the obvious exception, but clearly overbalanced by the guy that attempted to assassinate a bunch of Congressmen at that ball game.

Are there lots of examples I'm missing?

towaway1138··on Do skinny people have faster metabolisms? Not really
Ugh. The article completely contradicts the click-bait headline. Yeah, NEAT is a thing, and it's basically what people mean by "faster metabolisms".
towaway1138··on To Reduce Inequality, Let’s Downsize the Financial Sector
We could also reduce inequality by blowing up the planet. Instead, how about trying to raise the quality of life for those at the bottom?
towaway1138··on Our Culture of Contempt
As a lifelong liberal, I've sunk into despair at the firehose of hatred coming from the left these days. And I talk to far fewer of my old lefty friends anymore--if they've made themselves awful, I just don't want to know. I'd prefer to remember them as they were.

Maybe this is just a phase, but it feels like we're going to a place from which we won't return.

towaway1138··on The Planned Obsolescence of Old Coders
One possible reason for the lack of interest in older coders is that they're largely white and male. Hardly a sympathetic demographic in the current cultural environment.

For myself (note: am old), I'm just following the advice I've always given to other minorities that are discriminated against to various degrees. Which is: don't whine, and play the cards you were dealt as best you can.

The FAANGS may not, but many other employers can spot talent when they see it. Keep looking--there's a niche for everyone.

towaway1138··on Quietism (Philosophy)
This is interesting, but note that this is a specific technical usage of the word. There are other, more general uses:

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quietism and also one dictionary definition:

1a : a system of religious mysticism teaching that perfection and spiritual peace are attained by annihilation of the will and passive absorption in contemplation of God and divine things

b : a passive withdrawn attitude or policy toward the world or worldly affairs

2 : a state of calmness or passivity

Many of us become quietists in the sense of 1b.

towaway1138··on A belief in meritocracy is not only false: it’s morally wrong
The fact that merit is often difficult to evaluate doesn't mean that it's not important, crucial even.
towaway1138··on San Francisco median one bedroom apartment rent hits a new peak of $3,690
My most serious foray was around 2012, and back then such a house seemed to go for $800K. Given the mortgage ratios, that corresponds to a PI payment of around $3800/mo. Kind of hard to match this to current offerings, but it looks like maybe $1.3M now, so theoretically $6200/mo. So maybe $100-120K/y in mortgage payments? Not sure.

Can't recall the specifics, but my offer from a FAANG back then was a bit over $200K gross. But a lot of that isn't really liquid cash that you could use to pay the mortgage. It doesn't really fly.

These days, for the scenario above, even $300K/y cash seems marginal. And AFAIK, no one in the BA would seriously consider offering me that.

Lest someone complain that I seem entitled, let me say that I in no way consider that I somehow deserve such an offer. But at the same time, no BA employer deserves someone like me when I can get equivalent comp elsewhere.

IMO, the way BA comp works is you engage in raids for five to ten years when you're in your late 20s or early 30s. Live in squalor, three or five roommates, and bank it all. Do not marry. Then take your winnings back to the real world and retire, or at least, live an easy life.

But if you want a traditional life, thar be dragons...

towaway1138··on Why I Hope to Die at 75
Although I agree in general, it seems ethically incoherent to describe in details the horrors of living into decrepitude while opposing physician-assisted suicide (as the author does).

Also, the difference in life-expectancy at 60 between whites and blacks is less than two years, and perhaps significantly less. Unfortunate, but not what most of us would call appalling, especially because this might literally just be a n unchangeable fact of life.

Most importantly, the author, who sounds single, misses the significance of having a mate in all of this. Your family and friends may be sad to see you go, but it's a whole other thing for your wife/husband/etc.

towaway1138··on San Francisco median one bedroom apartment rent hits a new peak of $3,690
Because I've done my research. I generally quote salary requirements in terms of living in a modest house in a pretty good school district, on a single salary (since my wife wants to stay at home and raise the kids).

Not surprisingly, this makes recruiter jaws drop. We're not even on the same page.

In most parts of the country, though, those requirements work just fine.

towaway1138··on How does Oregon’s first-in-the-nation rent control law work?
They left out the most important question, which is: What will the poor do when developers rationally build fewer units of housing as a result?
