totierne2··on Why has there been so little progress on Alzheimer's disease?
Ok got minus 2 for that gotta rant elsewhere.
totierne2··on Why has there been so little progress on Alzheimer's disease?
I took lithium for <redacted tendancy> it got to my kidneys never thought of more generally microdosing lithium. Interesting. Full dose yeah flat and sleepy. Not sure it was the reason for flat out brain rot. (Other factors were available maybe just getting older.) Full dose needs blood tests as overdose weirdly bad. From <relative> due to dehydration / holiday in the sun looked like almost drunk but not drinking slopy etc. Slightly clingy desparate for interaction with strangers. <Other factors could have been available>. Not informed of damage relative seemed to recover ok. <Nationalised medical system>.

totierne2··on RFK Jr. Set to Launch Disease Registry Tracking Autistic People
There was a doing something about the slightly ill, or healthy at the edge of the overton window, taking away from the extreme cases getting treatment or attention angle. The sceptic might say there is no clear useful additional treatment or attention!

Extreme autism may different. Treated more by Labour rather than chemicals.

I am in a similar situation. Mental health issue: bipolar as a spectrum not an on/off. It also often has comorbidities. But bipolar is treated first!

totierne2··on Math Team
I was in the British system (3 subjects, interview, effectively CV/Resume for top University, but mostly school exams, I academically stuck rigidly to the syllabus plus minor extracurricular).

My 17 year old son is in the Irish system. Top 6 subjects count for points, nothing else. Plus some minor need to pass requirements on other subjects. i.e. you cannot just specialise in science and maths at the end. (His 6th best subject will be Irish, English or French, all hard to get very top marks in.)

With dumbing down/grade inflation the skill to get ahead into a good degree is be pretty good at everything. Rather than absolutely brilliant at a couple of things.

He did a tiny bit of computers and maths extra classes, but we could not keep the maths classes going when it went back to in person after COVID, as we are on the poorer side of Dublin. Small chance he goes to Britain for undergraduate, which will be weird as he would suddenly have interviews/CV/Resume, whereas no interview/CV/Resume in Ireland.

totierne2··on A guide for people who want to self-study the basics of computer science
I am looking for a bottle of computer science motivation for my 16 year old. I do an hour a week coding with him. It is not enough, he does no coding in between times. There are other things he prioritises ahead of coding. (School, music, YouTube videos, and chess.)
totierne2··on Red Hat RHEL 9 release
I thought 8 was relatively recent, I only started moving on to it. I am out of the loop, I do not know what I am missing out on in the latest 9 update and kernel. I moved on to mac/brew on the desktop 5 years ago. I use it as UNIX with supported hardware.

totierne2··on Back in 1993, I was taking a number theory class
Back in 1992 I was using a neural network library in Pascal. I did not know the admins were killing long running nohup tasks, rather than the program failing, so I could not run it on the UNIX boxes in the background, hence lots of foreground and usenet reading. The neural network use was applied, 'how did number of nodes, number of layers matter?' to analysing fetal heart rate data. Backpropagation was built in. I was recovering from a nervous breakdown, so my virtual neural network having breakdowns was a little bit strange. I got a 2:1 for the project i.e. good, but a 2.2 for the whole final year, i.e. very average.

totierne2··on Hackers hijack and publish mental health data of hundreds of people
Key thing is in employment. The damage of the pills vs likelihood of an episode at work. (Work may not know if your mental health diagnosis). Once you hit retirement you can stop taking medication.
totierne2··on Reddit's Stock Threads Become a Must-Read on Wall Street

totierne2··on When Do We Have Empathy for the Mentally Ill?
So I would get more empathy for saying my brother and uncle committed suicide, than saying I have bipolar. Interesting.
totierne2··on Have we overestimated the effectiveness of psychotherapy?
I participated in 3 CBT sessions 10 years ago I asked what will I get out of 6 sessions (the most my employer would pay for). The therapist said I would know my problems but not solved any of them. I did not attend any further sessions. I am a male programmer with bipolar. I did try a excel based survey labelled CBT which quantified where I was on general personality traits which was OK and free. I did read some popular therapy books. I could probably do with more work focussed excutive coach lite training if I could avoid the bad ones. I called works employee helpline recently, after a manic episode, I will see how that goes, it is more of a seen to be doing something rather than letting mania (occasionally) take its natural course.

Have you tried sqlcl from Oracle? 20 meg download (requires java). Up down left right work. Use sql hr@ instead of sqlplus hr @ (I am one of the developers.) . I should try it from within Emacs.
