tossedaway334··on Solaris 12 removed from Oracle roadmap, Solaris 11.next planned as next release
OpenSolaris did not accept contributions.
tossedaway334··on Solaris 12 removed from Oracle roadmap, Solaris 11.next planned as next release
Sun's hardware business is mostly irrelivant, and both IBM and HP are in the process of switching away from providing hardware (Especially IBM). SPARC was already mostly dead by the time that Oracle bought Sun.

The prize Oracle was after is Java, and they have already begun the long process of squeezing large enterprises with Java "commerical" features flags.

tossedaway334··on Solaris 12 removed from Oracle roadmap, Solaris 11.next planned as next release
I doubt it would have met with long term success, Sun played a lot of the same stupid liscening games they did with Java.

polyfills in general are a really awful user experience.

They are typically pushed by people who use the latest chrome, so they have an excuse not to care about other browsers.

Their preformance, and usability is almost invariably terrible.

tossedaway334··on Increase in Protocol 47 (GRE) traffic since end of December 2016
This is when somebody gets the bright idea to block all protocols other than TCP and UDP.

Hey you can just tunnel via udp right??

tossedaway334··on Think twice before signing subscription to Adobe products
I fail to see how subscription vs one time purchase costs are any way related to how much a customer costs to support, both situations have edge cases of demanding customers eating up support staff time endlessly.

If anything per-customer support costs go way up in a SaaS situation because of the (mostly artifical) introduction of having to run the software on your own servers.

tossedaway334··on “Reclaim Windows 10” Powershell Script
My linux install does not have "telemetry" (which is really just a polite word for what people used to call "spyware").
tossedaway334··on “Reclaim Windows 10” Powershell Script
Stuff like this is fundamentally unworkable when the people pushing software updates are your adversaries. They already do stuff like ignore DNS settings and firewall rules to send harvested data back to microsoft. They will almost certainly break anything this does in the future too...

tossedaway334··on Intel Core i7-7700K Kaby Lake review: Is the desktop CPU dead?
_something_ about the browser (either chrome or firefox, fresh profile, no extensions) is eating ungodly amounts of ram however, and it tends to be at its worst with JS heavy sites.

EDIT: no addons either

tossedaway334··on Intel Core i7-7700K Kaby Lake review: Is the desktop CPU dead?
In a _single_ 100% synthetic benchmark. The apple chip preforms so much better than other comparable arm cores (3-4x faster) on this benchmark I view it with a lot of suspicion.

I can list about 150 programming languages that are "faster than C" if you apply similar restrictions.

tossedaway334··on Intel Core i7-7700K Kaby Lake review: Is the desktop CPU dead?
you are overstating things significantly, ARM is still way behind (an order of magnitude or more) on single thread preformance. Nobody cares about preformance per watt if it means everything lags a massive amount.
tossedaway334··on Intel Core i7-7700K Kaby Lake review: Is the desktop CPU dead?
Nobody is even close to touching intel in its niche of high single chip preformance at reasonable power usage. PPC was way way behind when it got replaced.
tossedaway334··on PS4 hack: Fail0verflow demonstrate Linux and Steam running on Firmware 4.05
its perfectly rational if it increases sales, there are indications this is the case with PC piracy, especially with titles that would otherwise lack exposure.

Its also rational if it allows them to move away from custom designs entirely, and save a truckload of money, more than they lose to the nebulous spectre of "piracy".

tossedaway334··on Facebook Doesn’t Tell Users Everything It Really Knows About Them
There is plenty of blame to go around, people running data broker services are far from blameless.
tossedaway334··on Chrome browser for businesses

tossedaway334··on Chrome browser for businesses
It is the reality of the situation in a vast amount of companies.
tossedaway334··on The queen does not rule
I think you are misunderstanding the point that is being made. The point is that inheritance belongs to everyone NOT just a single family. Its not about forcing everyone to begin anew by banging two rocks together, its about allowing the common whole to inherit, not just a select few.
tossedaway334··on The queen does not rule
The author is mischarachterizing how Adam Smith viewed the division of labour. While he viewed it as a gain in economic efficency, he also viewed it as regrettable, limiting, and damaging to people, especially when taken to an extreme.

"The man whose whole life is spent in performing a
few simple operations, of which the effects are
perhaps always the same, or very nearly the same,
has no occasion to exert his understanding or to
exercise his invention in finding out expedients
for removing difficulties which never occur. He
naturally loses, therefore, the habit of such
exertion, and generally becomes as stupid and
ignorant as it is possible for a human creature
to become. The torpor of his mind renders him not
only incapable of relishing or bearing a part in
any rational conversation, but of conceiving any
generous, noble, or tender sentiment, and
consequently of forming any just judgement
concerning many even of the ordinary duties of
private life... But in every improved and civilized
society this is the state into which the labouring
poor, that is, the great body of the people, must
necessarily fall, unless government takes some
     pains to prevent it."
The moral side of Adam Smith's arguements is often entirely ignored in analysis of his philosophy. He strongly condems many aspects of a free market/capatialist economy. Why this is never focused on isnt very clear to me.
tossedaway334··on The State of Linux Security
OSX is effectively a microkernel in name only, its a microkernel with a single monolithic UNIX kernel client, and has virtually none of the advantages of a real microkernel setup with multiple clients sharing tasks.
