tossaccount123··on Ray Kurzweil 2019 Predictions
People want to believe we are capable of anything as humans

A depressing thought I've had is that maybe we will reach a point where we can go no further due to biological limitations. Think about monkeys, they have primitive tools but are effectively stagnant.

It's an objective fact our progress has slowed

https://www.technologyreview.com/s/601199/tech-slowdown-thre...

A monkey can't understand advanced mathematics. What if there are certain things about physics and the universe humans will never be able to grasp because we are simply too stupid as a species?

your study is from 2012, newest research found strong correlation between certain genes and educational attainment, stronger than environmental factors like parents income[1]

your snopes article is about inheriting from mother alone, not parents

There IS also a significant difference between births based on income

65 births per 1000 women vs 43 births per 1000 women

tossaccount123··on Cafe opens in Tokyo staffed by robots controlled by paralyzed people
wow, using technology to increase productivity to make up for stable population rather than importing millions of people who will be out of jobs due to technological advances in a few years. Truly a game changing strategy
tossaccount123··on For years, Guatemalans traveled thousands of miles for jobs in Mt Pleasant, Iowa
I've always thought that was a terrible argument. The same logic could be used to justify slavery since our food price would drop even lower. Work conditions aren't much different for illegal laborers compared to slaves anyway. If they complain they get deported
tossaccount123··on For years, Guatemalans traveled thousands of miles for jobs in Mt Pleasant, Iowa
>everyone knows that immigrant labor keeps rural communities going in Iowa

What? I know people who made $30 an hour with full benefits in the 70s doing those jobs. It amazes me people can claim to support the poor/middle class and illegal immigration at the same time

Illegal immigration killed those communities by driving down wages and forcing people to go to college and move to a city to find a job that provides a living wage. The result is the death spiral of many rural communities as young kids are forced to leave

I won't blame illegals completely, big business and corporate farms are the ones that pushed for it in the name of better profit margins for investors

tossaccount123··on The Chinese scientist who allegedly created CRISPR babies is being detained
Who needs nukes when you can send an autonomous drone swarm to subjugate a country? Or develop an ethnic bio weapon to wipe out your enemies with no damage to infrastructure? Nukes will be seen as primitive brute force weapons in the future
tossaccount123··on The Chinese scientist who allegedly created CRISPR babies is being detained
If I was China I would put him in an underground lab and make him work day and night

I can't find the article but there was a geneticist who said the difference between Einstein and the average human was 50-200 base pairs.

Which ever country figures that out first will rule the world. Instead of getting an Einstein or Newton or Da Vinci every several hundred years, they could have an assembly line of them.

China already collected the DNA of 2,200 geniuses to try and find correlations. The West's value of "human rights" and subjective ethics will be our doom. We are completely ignoring avenues of research because people don't like the implications of intelligence being genetic

hard to tell what "anti-corruption" means in Xi's China. From what I've heard most of the time it's more a purge of people not loyal to Xi via selective enforcement of the law
tossaccount123··on Japan to withdraw from the International Whaling Commission
Does any other animal species care about things other than themselves? Natural selection would weed out individuals who were too altruistic, if you're looking for something to blame you're going to have to blame thousands of years of evolution selecting for the cruelest and greediest organisms
tossaccount123··on Japan to withdraw from the International Whaling Commission
>They didn't began their lives as "farm raised animals for the purpose of slaughter".

they did though, cows were domesticated from aurochs and pigs from wild boars for the express purpose of making them easier to slaughter as livestock rather than having to hunt them. Same for chickens. Is it humane? I don't know but they they wouldn't exist in their present form if not for humans domesticating and breeding them for their current characteristics

Interesting how so many leftists who hate the koch brothers and their big money spending are fine with billionaire tech elites throwing their money around

But I suppose that's not surprising considering the top 10 richest districts and 73 of the top 100 voted democrat

tossaccount123··on Australian parliament passes encryption laws unamended
where? From what I've seen Europe, UK, USA, Canada, and especially China are all moving in this direction of more privacy intrusions. Considering the West has traditionally offered the most freedom for its citizens I'd say things are trending towards authoritarian governments
tossaccount123··on Dear Tumblr: Banning “Adult Content” Will Harm Sex-Positive Communities
Not as bad as I've seen from Tumblr. It's moving towards meme territory with how bad some of the bans are

Update It has in fact become a meme, example

tossaccount123··on Australian parliament passes encryption laws unamended
The government's primary goal is to protect itself and continue growing like cancer. In many ways the citizens are it's greatest threat because they can vote to cut budget and the power of the political elites. These laws are a way to increase monitoring of citizens so problems can be squashed before they grow too big and threaten the government.

Make no mistake, with the rise of ML governments will be able to crush social movements in the nascent stage before they become too big to stop. People will be arrested for thought crimes because they posted the wrong thing on the wrong website. And currently a large number of people would cheer because the people getting arrested are on the "other" side of the political spectrum. Be careful what you wish for

tossaccount123··on Google Will Pay Publishers for ‘The Night of the Yellow Ad’
Extremely high click-through-rate isn't good generally. I can make something very vague and get high CTR but the conversion will be awful and a waste of money. For an awareness or cost per impression campaign it would be good though.

Compared to the average display ad the bright yellow grabs attention and "The night of the yellow ad" makes you curious

tossaccount123··on Dear Tumblr: Banning “Adult Content” Will Harm Sex-Positive Communities
Seems like they've tried to roll their own machine learning classifier as well because I've seen some comically bad screenshots of banned content. For example, a picture of someone's finger got banned as sexually explicit.

Should have just used AWS or Google Cloud AI APIs

tossaccount123··on British Telecom bars Huawei's 5G kit from core of network
Huawei is rumored to have backdoored the African Union and Trump has been pushing other countries to get tough on China in general for stealing IP. This is essentially an extension of the trade war and valid fears that the Chinese government may be spying on you if you use Huewei
