toshk··on Sleep technique used by Salvador Dalí works
Some buddhist sleep meditations are often called clear light meditations.

For them btw is not the trick to remember the thoughts but to stay aware when transitioning to the sleep phase, this is one of the moments clear conciousness can be experienced according to certain teachings.

toshk··on FerretDB: A truly open-source MongoDB alternative
Yeah seems like a mix between a ORM and a Database, not sure how much they can let postgres solve. But I agree when I look into it, it's bit less scary then a competely new database.
toshk··on FerretDB: A truly open-source MongoDB alternative
I always find it very brave those who decide to use a newly created database in their projects.
toshk··on CFTC Orders JPMorgan to Pay Record $920M for Spoofing and Manipulation (2020)
You are probably very right

The story I remember was a popular documentary which had a story arch of a single trader single breaking the market from his parents bedroom. Which is a good story but most likely just a small part of the truth; also probably why the Wikipedia just mentions him shortly.

toshk··on CFTC Orders JPMorgan to Pay Record $920M for Spoofing and Manipulation (2020)
Its not very different from the Flash crash, in 2015 an independent trainer named Navinder Singh Sarao was sued for manipulating the market, he was creating a lot of orders and cancelling them tricking the flash trading computers to push up the prices, he made around 45 million in the process while living in his parent house. In 2020 he was convicted with a year of confinement at home, no jail time, and a trading ban.

So yeah also not the biggest punishment, but more then what these bankers got, they are still allowed to trade and no confinement.

Whether he was the only one to do it and whether he was the main cause of crash is not clear, but at least he had a part.

I personally feel like if you allow flash trading to have such an advantage over investors without those means it shouldn't be illegal to exploit it, but anyway.

toshk··on Bumble claims IP rights on employee's open-source libs
I mean employer
toshk··on Bumble claims IP rights on employee's open-source libs
In Dutch law it's actually by default the case that your employee can claim the ip of your work, if you want to prevent it you need to put the clause in, most people are not aware. Very disturbing.
toshk··on Tell HN: GitHub is down again
Yeah it seems company status page lost its infancy stage where companies were actually honest about their outages. Bit similar what happened to online reviews.
toshk··on New Concerning Variant: B.1.1.529
Yet it seems that's the road we are taking. Some bro science: In 5-10 year heard immunity is what will happen.

Every year it will be a little less. Vaccines and other medicines will dampen the casualties. Partial lockdowns and restrictions will be kept in place so it doesn't get too much out of control.

Kids and teenager will grow up with corona being just one of the viruses they get among many others and build up, it not a full immunity at least a decent ability to handle it.

And slowly less and less it will control our society. But will definitely take a while.

toshk··on Show HN: Pony – a messenger for mindful correspondence
Current communication platforms are so massive (sms, whatsapp, e-mail, messenger etc.) that it feels like such a huge fight to get some form of network effect, that's why I was thinking of a way of integrating with them instead of creating a completely alternative channel. But it might be possible in some niches/ influencers way.

Anyway to better clarify my initial comment. There are chrome extensions, allowing you to schedule emails at certain times. You could do a similar things were you extend chrome with an extension for Pony Gmail, where you send email on the pony time scheduled. The sending part is solvable.

Receiving however, 2 problems: - Organise receiving; not sure if it can be done, but probably its somehow possible to create a service that saves all incoming meessages and then once a day serves it to a seperate inbox

- Senders probably sometimes need sn autoresponder, that's a problem already solved.

Anyway, just brainstorming out loud. Wish you all the best.

toshk··on Show HN: Pony – a messenger for mindful correspondence
Love your enthusiasm :).

Okay from a different angle. Im sure you have thought about this:

My point was referring to the challenge of moving people away from their existing communication platforms.

So I wrote down some quick ideas how to move your philosophy which many of us clearly appreciated to our current workflow.

Convincing individuals to your product is something you are clearly succeeding in, but for many of us to convince our social circles to move your product won't be so easy to do.

At least I, and maybe more of us would love this feature in Gmail or whatever e-mail client they are using.

toshk··on Tasking developers with creating detailed estimates is a waste of time (2020)
I think point of OP is that people and culture matter more then the process.

Whether that is an estimation or popular ways of organizing: Scrum, kanban, waterfall.

If you have good honest people who care more about the project goal then their personal position it works, if you have a culture of "my position" means more then the end goal and the people I work with, nothing works.

toshk··on Show HN: Pony – a messenger for mindful correspondence
Awesome, problem is to convince everyone to use pony. Would be great to move this to for instance browser extensions for slack, gmail, and if techincally possible whatsapp.

At least my sending can get scheduled. And maybe also autoresponders.

Wont be exactly the same.

toshk··on The Spiral Staircase Myth (2020)
Your argument is the main point he makes in the intro and is the strongest argument against the theory. But the arguments the author lists himself are not very strong:

1. "The swordsman theory is predicated upon the belief that castles were intrinsically designed as military structures" => "just because most were; there are a lot of castle like fortress that were actively used as defense sitations.

2. If staircases were genuinely engineered for military purposes, then we should always find that they turn clockwise. => No, opposite, since not all were used military it might not have been a priority for all, and also not all builders might have been aware of this strategy.

etc...

toshk··on Ask HN: What is the fastest way to ramp up on DevOps, k8 and GCP?
Yeah true, NPM is not the right comparison, I typed too fast, meant the frontend world and k8s world remind me of each other in certain ways. And I really find k8s and HELM im using not so stable, or ready, that's why everyone is using lots of different tools. I found old school Apache/Nginx a lot more stable. True Kubernetes solves a lot more problems, but as a result simple things, like a simple filesystem mount, causes all kind of issues.
toshk··on Ask HN: What is the fastest way to ramp up on DevOps, k8 and GCP?
Kubernetes is like the Javascript of NPM, a new tool every week, very good at complicated things, but simple things are complicated. It seems to be dominant docker server management atm, but not sure if it will stay like that.
toshk··on Rich Harris joins Vercel to work on Svelte full time

toshk··on Edward Snowden Slams Sam Altman's Worldcoin: 'Don't Catalogue Eyeballs'
The dollar is highly popular in inflationary regimes, crypto is a popular thing to write about, and a few use it but the main defacto backup currency almost always becomes the dollar. (For instance in Venezuala)
toshk··on Facebook chooses profits over people
It's hard for investors to get Management in line of the needs of the investors, they mostly work for their own needs, take a look at the big bonuses and raises they constantly give themselves. Often even after a terrible year.

In big corporations there are so many investors that they are hardly organized. And even if they are it's a difficult problem to incentivize a manager correctly. It's a topic with a lot economical scientific research. In theoretical terms it's called the principle-agent problem.

toshk··on Airbnb removes 80% of advertisements in Amsterdam after registration obligation
Rutger not Femke.
toshk··on Airbnb removes 80% of advertisements in Amsterdam after registration obligation
Do you always attack people so personal? "Education on me has been wasted" :)?

I said GroenLinks was dominant under upper white middle class. Which it is since it's the biggest party in the council at the moment and was by far the most popular in White upper class neighborhoods like west and ijburg last local elections. And is by far, with it's dominant leader, the most dominant voice in the current council; to call them left is not a stretch, it's in their name.

D66 likes to join coalitions and then mostly leans in the direction of the dominant party, the house restrictions policy for sure can be described as anti capitalistic since they limit the free use of your capital (,house). For instance needing a permit to live with more then 3 adults in your own house is a new law they passed last year. Or only allowing buyers that will live in the houses.

I don't agree or disagree with all policies; but it's definitely not a stretch for me to classify them as left.

toshk··on Airbnb removes 80% of advertisements in Amsterdam after registration obligation
GroenLinks has always been the most outspoken against Airbnb. Complaints are probably heaviest in West and not South. But it doesn't matter where, the green left is the most dominant party under upper middle class, together with D66.

And indeed I wrote it in a way that complaining people led to the fight against Airbnb but I think there are many more reasons. GroenLinks ideology is definitely not caused by that to be sure.

And whether you agree with their policies or not. It's hard to argue against that they at least have made some symbolic political moves, for instance the removal of Iamsterdam because the I was to indivualistic.

toshk··on Airbnb removes 80% of advertisements in Amsterdam after registration obligation
Not completely. Most were dormant advertisements.

There is not a big tourist tax here; the biggest tax evasions for private people is probably on their income tax level, but that's not solved by this.

The direct issue it addresses is the take over of many tourists of certain neighborhoods meant for living.

The favorite hobby of habitants of Amsterdam is complaining about tourists.

The fight against Airbnb is a symbolic fight for the left winged parties in the city. Airbnb stands for big bad capitalistic wolf that makes the city unlivable for the normal people.

The issue this bigger fight addresses is that Amsterdam is slowly becoming unaffordable for normal people and especially families. Tourist rentals are partly to blame, but there are many more causes (low interest rate, rich parents, students, limited space and more)

So there are a bunch of restrictive legislations trying to deal with this, this is just one of them. Another one for instance is that since last year it's required to have a permit if you want to live in a house with more then 2 adults.

Already for years it was required to register every night you rented out your appartment. Airbnb however refused to open the books so there was no way to check it for the city. Probably this way Amsterdam can check every registered appartment that's publically listed without the help of Airbnb.

toshk··on Airbnb removes 80% of advertisements in Amsterdam after registration obligation
It was already obligated to register every time you rented.
toshk··on Amazon copied products and rigged search results to promote its own brands
The grocery stores I visit do the same in the Netherlands, maybe even worse, especially the biggest one here, Albert Hein (Ahold), is very skilled at it. They copy the most popular products, sell them slightly cheaper, similar designs as the most popular brand, then go on and display their products at eye height and move the big brands down. Yet every court case against them they've won. And the sentiment is far less negative about them than Amazon. They have a similar significant market share (35% of grocery market) as Amazon here. Maybe in the end, it's slightly more ethical since their strategy is mostly at the cost of the big corporates (Unilever) who can handle and fight them and not the smaller companies; and arguably, the consumer wins in the end.
toshk··on Klimaticket: All public transport in Austria with a single ticket for 1095 EUR/y
Hmmm, problem is if it would be the dominant way of buying tickets the transport organisation would loose even more incentive to be customer oriented. Many public transportation companies, for instance Deutche Bahn, are awful and rude. They are often semi-public and semi-monopolistic, imagine paying them a year budget up front, would make things even worse.
toshk··on What it's like to spend 40-50 hours in VR every week
I think it's a little bit more then the worries we see with TV's since children under a certain age are not allowed to use it.

But yeah I couldn't imagine using it for a workday. I bought an Oculus Go once, my eyes couldn't handle it for more then 5 tot 10 minutes.

But I guess everyone is different, can imagine for some people like me it's not healthy

toshk··on 200k-year-old hand art found near a Tibetan hot spring
The assumption by some of the scientist is that the handprints were created in the mud and then stones formed. But others question this, could also be created after: https://www.nbcnews.com/science/science-news/art-not-ancient...

It's very common to find handprints in the Himalayas in rocks, they are everywhere.

toshk··on 200k-year-old hand art found near a Tibetan hot spring
There are lots of them. In many places in Tibet I've seen them, especially in the old Kham area, they were all over the place. The Tibetans believe it's prove of the depth of meditation that one can put the hand in the rock.

toshk··on Apple threatened Facebook ban over slavery posts on Instagram
If a random person hosts that pdf/image etc. on their personal server they are also responsible for serving that content. So I don't see how this differs for a big company. You make content available therefore become a publisher. Also hosting companies can and should be held responsible for the content of their servers their customers host.
